The meeting hall was dead silent as they all tried to let the recent development sink in. This is exactly one of his biggest fears.
What baffled him the most was the fact that the letter addressed to him never stated all that was mentioned in the company's letter. The letter sent to him didn't sound so harsh or rigorous as the one sent to the company.
Although he didn't inform any of them about the letter he had received, he was more disturbed about the one addressed to the company and so was everyone.
It stated that if the company should continue with the project, it will be held accountable for all the risk that may be encountered. The island's inhabitants are willing and ready to fight to their last drop of blood. They would rather die during the demolition process than leave. It also stated that if anything should happen to the workers sent there, the company will only have itself to blame.
Nothing about the island's ownership was stated but a restraining order was attached to the letter.
He heaved a deep breath as he leaned back in his chair and massaged his temple with his index and middle finger. He was not in his normal office clothes because he was dressed casually and ready to visit the island before the urgent emergency arose.
"You were totally right Mr Orman. It was for the best we departed from that project" Mr Andrew said after a long thought.
"I think for now all we need to do is clear out our name. We need to let them know that we are no longer a part of anything that has to do with them or their island and also to prove it to them" Mr Johnson suggested.
"Yes I agree with that" Mr Goddy said.
"But how can we prove it to them? If anything should go wrong won't they hold us responsible one way or the other?" Mrs Coleman asked.
"In that case we'll send them a copy of the first signed contract with the Jenkins and the contrary one" Dave spoke for the first time.
"But isn't that confidential only to both parties?" Mr Andrew inquired.
"We just have to. The document of disassociation is the only prove we have because it states reasons why we can't go on with the project in the first place. The date signed will also be another prove that the deal was cancelled even before they sent their warnings" he added.
After few minutes of objections and disputations, they all arrived at the same conclusion. A letter of warrant written by the company was signed by him and mailed back to the same address. All stated evidences were attached too.
About an hour after the tension died down his phone buzzed followed by a familiar ringtone. He had assigned specific ring tones to different sets of people. If it was work related, it emitted a specific assigned tone but the sound that came was not work related, in fact it meant that a close family member was calling, either his sisters, mother or nanny Pauline.
He quickly checked and it was Nanny Pauline. He picked up only to receive another devastating news of the day. He thought within him if the day could get worse than it already is.
Charlotte was under admission at the family hospital as a result of an injury she underwent in her weekend gym class. He had to leave the company and rush to the hospital immediately.
As soon as he entered the waiting area, he saw nanny Pauline pacing round the room.
Nanny Pauline was employed by his parents when he and Samantha were still kids. She had lost her husband and only child in a car accident and his parents granted her a permanent employment and accommodation in the mansion with few months annual leave. She had performed her duties earnestly ever since then by caring for him and his sisters like her own ever since they were little kids. She was therefore considered as a member of the family. She is a second mother to him and his sisters because she was always there for them whenever their parents were away. If there was anyone who knew him better than his own parents it would be her. He preferred sharing most of his personal problems and feelings with her most of the times than sharing it with his mother. She was more understanding and always there for him and Charlotte in particular.
"Davey, thank goodness you're here" she said immediately she sighted him. She always called him with his pet name anywhere anytime and never acted formal with him.
"What happened nanny? How is she?" He asked. His voice couldn't conseal his anxiety.
"I don't know. The doctors are still examining her" she said. Her own anxiety was written all over her.
"How bad is the case? Did she fall down?"
"Just this afternoon, I received a call from her gym instructor saying that Charlotte had collapsed while they were having classes and she needs immediate medical attention. So TJ and I had to rush to bring her here" she narrated.
TJ was the family's trusted and oldest driver. He was his father's personal driver whom he had retained even after his father died because he was very loyal and trustworthy. Though there were other drivers employed by the family, he was the only driver who lived in the mansion and enjoyed free shelter and other services. Dave had put Charlotte under his care. He drives her everywhere and he was in charge of running important family errands. Dave and his mother each had their own personal drivers who work without living in the mansion athough he mostly preferred to drive himself around unofficially.
Just then, the doctor emerged from the ER.
"Doctor, how is she?" Nanny Pauline asked in a hurry as soon as she sighted the doctor.
"Are you related to the girl that was rushed in earlier?" The doctor began.
"She's my sister. What's her present condition please?" Dave interjected.
"Your sister is stable now she just went through some shock which I guess was caused by an impact on her system. Though she's okay now but we need to carryout more tests on her because she seems to be having pains around her lower abdomen" the doctor explained.
Dave could only hope that nothing bad happens to her because he was the one who insisted that his mother allow his sister join the gym classes because it was one of the things she wanted. If anything should happen to his sister, he'd blame himself entirely and at the moment, his mother is away on a one week travel. It was just him and Charlotte.
Moments later, the tests result was ready and an appendectomy is to be carried out on Charlotte. He felt a little relieved because it was just a minor surgery and he hoped and prayed that she gets better after that. He had to call his mother afterwards and she trusted him to take care of things before she returns.
He stayed with his sister even after the surgery was performed successfully. He spent the night in the hospital with her and in the morning Samantha came to visit, giving him the chance to return home and freshen up.
Though Samantha was rebellious and discourteous, he still loved her regardless. He made sure she lacked nothing even though she decided to live alone as a result of their differences. She has her cars with personal drivers and servants. She and their mother were in charge of a branch of the Orman Empire that specializes in fashion design in which she is a senior boss there.
Charlotte recuperated really fast and became lively once again. She was discharged on the third day after the surgery and Dave was glad to see her normal once more.
However, the words said in the private letter he had received kept ringing in his ears all through.
"....For the sake of your reputation, for the sake of your family and for the sake of your new connection with that island...."
"do not soil your hands..... do not involve yourself in any illegality..."
"....Do not unravel mysteries long buried for your safety..."
He couldn't help but wonder what those words truly mean. Though he knew he shouldn't, but he wanted to get to the root of it all. If the Jenkins didn't own the island, why then did they want him to get involved? What is the mystery behind that island?
He resolved to carry out a little investigation and it will all begin in the Jenkins Enterprise.
