ELEVEN AVEBURY, WILTSHIRE JULY 13, 2022 AD AND 2300 BC On my third day in Wiltshire, I decided to make an evening trip to Windmill Hill. Taking the Porsche, I had to drive through Avebury, on to Bray Street, then make a right turn along a lane and find a suitable verge to park. This done at around seven o’clock, I looked around and, quite alone, climbed to the top of the hill. To reach the summit I passed through one of the ancient causeways over the deep depressions of the ditch. Once I had arrived, a magnificent view surrounded me, embracing prehistoric monuments—the imposing mound of Silbury Hill, still a mystery to archaeologists, the West Kennet long barrow on the skyline to the south and directly below, Avebury henge with its cluster of cottages in the centre.
