The main bar was still alive with muted conversations and the occasional clink of glasses, but the hallway leading to the private rooms was noticeably quieter. The music faded into a distant hum as they walked past the closed doors, the thick carpet beneath their feet swallowing the sound of their steps. Georgia stopped in front of one of the VIP rooms and opened the door without another word. Inside, a man sat alone on one of the sofas, a glass of amber whiskey resting loosely between his fingers. Catherine's steps slowed. Tall. Dark. Handsome. That was the first description that came to mind. He looked to be in his late thirties, with dark hair, sharp masculine features, and piercing eyes that seemed to take in everything without revealing what he was thinking. His expensive suit fit him perfectly, emphasizing the broadness of his shoulders and the controlled confidence in the way he carried himself. He didn't look like an ordinary customer. There was something about him that immediately reminded Catherine of the wealthy patrons who frequented the bar—the kind of men who were accustomed to private rooms, expensive drinks, and getting what they wanted without having to ask twice. But it wasn't his suit. It wasn't even his appearance. It was his eyes. The moment Catherine stepped inside, his gaze lifted and locked onto hers. Something inside her went strangely still. She didn't know why. There was something familiar about those eyes. Not familiar enough for her to recognize him, but enough to make an uncomfortable sensation crawl through her chest. Almost haunting. Have I seen him before? Catherine studied his face for another second, searching her memory. Nothing. Maybe she had simply seen him around the bar. Georgia had already told her he was one of their regular patrons. She had worked there long enough to see countless wealthy men come and go. It wasn't impossible for a face—or a pair of eyes—to remain somewhere in the back of her mind. Still, she couldn't shake the feeling. Georgia stepped farther into the room. “Mr. Dela Cerna, this is the girl I was telling you about who could accompany you here. This is Catherine. And Catherine, this is Mr. Ken Dela Cerna.” “Ken.” The name registered in Catherine's mind. For some reason, hearing it made that strange familiarity feel even stronger. She quickly pushed the thought aside. Georgia smiled brightly. “I'll leave you two. Get along.” Before Catherine could say anything, Georgia turned and walked out. The door closed behind her. Silence settled over the room. Catherine remained near the entrance, suddenly aware that she was alone with a man she barely knew. Ken placed his glass on the table. Then he stood. “You're here for my company, Miss Catherine?” His voice was deeper than she expected—calm, controlled, and almost too composed. He started walking toward her. Catherine instinctively stepped backward. One step. Then another. Her eyes remained fixed on him until her back finally met the wall. Ken stopped in front of her. “And you're nervous. I can see that.” Catherine swallowed. She didn't understand why being this close to him made her feel so uneasy. She briefly closed her eyes, trying to steady herself, but when she opened them again, Ken was still watching her. His hands came up, resting against the wall on either side of her head. The close proximity made everything about him more noticeable. The faint scent of whiskey on his breath mixed with the rich, unmistakable fragrance of his cologne. “I'm not nervous, sir,” she managed, even though her voice betrayed her slightly. “I'm just surprised.” “Really?” His gaze never left hers. “Because I can see you're about to turn back.” Catherine said nothing. Ken studied her face. “Are you really sure you want to be my companion here for today?” She knew she could still leave. Nothing was physically forcing her to stay. But she had already followed Georgia into the room, and she wasn't about to let this intimidating man see just how nervous he was making her. “Yes...” she whispered. Ken's gaze dropped toward her lips. Catherine's heart immediately began pounding harder. She looked away. But Ken caught her gently by the chin and turned her face back toward him. Before she could react, his l!ps captured hers. Catherine froze. The kiss was sudden enough to catch her completely off guard. For a second, she couldn't even think. Then instinct took over. She pushed him away. Ken stepped back without protest as Catherine quickly created several steps of distance between them. Her breathing had become uneven. She turned toward the coffee table, where the bottle of whiskey stood beside an empty glass. She needed something to steady herself. Her fingers closed around the bottle. She poured herself a drink and swallowed it quickly, feeling the warmth burn down her throat. When she lowered the glass, she looked back at him. Ken was watching her. The corner of his mouth lifted slightly. “Hard to get.” Catherine frowned. “What?” “I like it.” She stared at him. What kind of man is this? Ken started moving toward her again. Catherine immediately raised both hands. “Wait. Stop there.” He stopped. She kept her palms raised for another second before slowly lowering them. Her heart was still beating too fast. “Before we...” She paused, trying to collect herself. “Let's talk about the payment first.” Ken's eyebrows lifted. “Payment?” “Yes.” Catherine pointed toward him, suddenly more confident now that the conversation had shifted to something she understood. “First payment first. Just to make sure you're actually going to pay me.” For the first time that evening, Ken looked genuinely amused. “You don't trust me?” “I don't know you.” She folded her arms. “And you're a businessman, right? Then you should understand. Payment first.” Ken stared at her for a moment. Most women who entered this room already knew who he was. They knew his name, his reputation, his money. Catherine didn't seem interested in any of it. She was treating him like a client. Nothing more. Ken remained standing in front of her, studying her with renewed interest. “You really want the payment first?” “Yes.” She held out her hand. “Money first, mister.” Ken let out a quiet laugh and shook his head. “You're unbelievable.” “Are you paying me or not?” “Fine.” His voice lowered. “Name your price.” Catherine's expression immediately changed. “Now we're talking.” Ken reached inside his coat and pulled out his checkbook. He wrote an amount without hesitation, tore the check from the book, and handed it to her. Catherine accepted it and looked at the number. Her eyes widened slightly. That was more than she had expected. She quickly folded the check and slipped it into her pocket. “You could agree with me after all—” She didn't get to finish. Ken suddenly caught her hand. Catherine barely had time to react before he pulled her down onto the sofa beside him. The movement was quick enough to make her gasp, and before she could regain her balance, his body was already close to hers. “Make sure you will perform it well,” he murmured. Catherine shifted away, but Ken reached behind her neck, his fingers settling against the nape of her neck. The touch sent an unexpected shiver through her. His l!ps brushed the side of her neck. Catherine startled and instinctively grabbed both of his shoulders. “Wait—”
