Chapter 6

We got to his car, my jaw nearly hit the floor. It turns out that Cousin IT is not only irresponsibly handsome, but he is also insanely rich. Yup, he drives a Merc AMG G Series.  Who exactly is this man? “So where to?” was all I could make out of the sound yanking me back to reality, forcing me to fix my face and wipe the drool from my face. 14 Fourteenth Street I mechanically replied, with my mind still in over drive. “Ook.” He said with a soft smile on his face   We drove in silence for what seemed like a lifetime.    I caught him smiling at me again several times.   I realised that in true Alexandra Morgna fashion, I had totally taken over on hand was already adjusting his heater settings and the other working on his radio.   “Sorry”  I said, “I didn’t realise how wet I was.” I blurted out He simpered at me.  “Wet … w wet from standing in the rain.” I burst out trying to defend myself and emphasise my innocence.  He carried on smiling and said nothing.  He finally broke the silence, “So what’s at 14 fourteenth street that has you so dressed up?”  His question threw me.  “A dinner date.” I replied” There was a weird look on his face, something in his eyes, I can’t really explain. If I didn’t know any better I would have mistaken it for sadness. No more smile. He seemed rather disappointed. He stared straight ahead not saying a word.  I regretted saying those words as soon as I said them. I don’t know why, but I did. I wanted to take the words back  or at least explain myself and tell him all the details. It is eating me up inside to know that I have caused him hurt and disappointment.   “We’re almost there” he finally said.  Then more silence and tension.   I couldn’t understand why he was upset by me  having a dinner date.  More importantly, why am I upset that he’s upset about my having dinner plans?  He’s doing it again. Getting me all worked up. Damn it!  Can we just get there already.     MORE TENSION AND DISCOMFORT! Emotional rollercoaster!   “We’re here” he said “Thank God!” Universe please don’t tell me I said that out loud. I thought to myself, cringing in embarrassment. “Ok, thanks.” I said. Oh world Pleeease open up and swallow me whole, I thought to myself, frantically trying to get out the car so that he does not see my face. I fear that the 20 shades of red on my face will  show how embarrassed and absolutely nervous I am.   “I’ll make sure your car’s taken care of.” He said to me as I still avoid making  eye contact with him.  “You really don’t have to do that. I’ll make a plan some time tomorrow. Thanks for the ride. I really appreciate it.” I said quickly with no pause, still trying to not look at him. “Don’t worry about it.” He replied while I still struggled to get out of the car. He walked around and opened my door for me.  No one’s ever done that for me. Not even my dad.  “Let me help you with those” He said as I tried to grab my bag and the desert. For a brief moment, our hands touched and there was surge of electricity that shot through my body.  It was so delicious yet scary due to its unknown and unexpected nature. So thrilling that it caused me to gasp and to quickly pull my hand away. “No, it’s fine, I’ve got them.” I said trying to seem unaffected. He reached for my hand again and helped me get out of the car, and there it was again, electric shivers surging through my hand.   “Thanks again” I said breathlessly as I dashed towards the gate, trying to outrun the thoughts and whatever this is that is happening to my body. All because of a simple and harmless touch? “ Don’t worry about it.” He said. I didn’t give him the opportunity to say any more. I needed some space and some air. I needed to get away from him and catch my breath.   I walked into the house, 20 minute late.
