Maria's POV) The fire in the study crackled softly, casting flickering shadows across the room. I stood just inside the door, my arms crossed, my heart pounding in my chest. Leonardo had summoned me, and though I had no idea what to expect, I wasn’t about to show any sign of weakness. His back was to me, his hands clasped behind him as he stared out the window into the moonlit garden. The tension in the room was thick, almost suffocating. “You wanted to see me,” I said, my voice steady but laced with tension. He turned slowly, his sharp blue eyes meeting mine. For a moment, he said nothing, simply studying me. I hated that look—like he could see right through me, like he knew every thought racing through my mind. I clenched my fists at my sides, refusing to look away. “Sit,” he said, gesturing to the chair in front of his desk. I hesitated, my jaw tightening. “I’d rather stand.” His lips twitched, almost into a smirk. “Suit yourself.” He walked around the desk, his movements deliberate, and leaned against the edge, his arms crossed. The tension in the room was palpable, a silent battle of wills between us. I didn’t know what game he was playing, but I wasn’t about to back down. “I’ve been thinking about your place in this family,” he began, his tone calm but probing. “You’ve made it clear that you’re not content to sit idly by and play the role of a dutiful wife.” My eyes narrowed. “And why should I? You’ve given me no reason to trust you, no reason to believe that I’m anything more than a pawn in your games.” His expression didn’t change, but there was a flicker of something in his eyes—respect, perhaps, or maybe just curiosity. “What if I told you that you could be more than that?” My breath caught, but I didn’t let it show. “What are you talking about?” He pushed off the desk and took a step closer, his gaze never leaving mine. “What if I told you that you could have power? Real power. Not just the illusion of it, but the ability to shape your own destiny, to fight back against the forces that have tried to control you?” My heart raced, but I forced myself to stay calm. “And how exactly would I do that?” His lips curved into a faint smile, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “By becoming one of us.” I frowned, my mind racing. “One of you? What does that even mean?” He took another step closer, his voice dropping to a low, almost conspiratorial tone. “It means training you. Teaching you how to fight, how to survive in this world. How to wield power instead of being wielded by it.” My eyes widened, and for a moment, I was speechless. The idea was absurd, outrageous even. But there was something in his gaze, something that made me believe he was serious. “You want to make me an assassin?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. He nodded, his expression unreadable. “Yes.” I shook my head, a bitter laugh escaping my lips. “You’re insane. You think I would ever agree to that? To become a killer?” His gaze hardened, and he took another step closer, his presence towering over me. “You already are a killer, Maria. You just don’t know it yet.” My breath hitched, and I took a step back, my chest tightening. “What are you talking about?” His eyes bore into mine, his voice cold and unyielding. “You’ve been fighting your entire life. Against your father, against Ophelia, against me. You’ve been fighting to survive, to keep yourself from being crushed by the weight of this world. But you’ve been fighting blind, without direction, without purpose. I’m offering you the chance to fight with purpose. To take control of your life instead of letting it control you.” My hands clenched into fists at my sides, my nails digging into my palms. “And what if I don’t want to fight? What if I just want to be left alone?” His smirk returned, but it was darker now, more dangerous. “Then you’ll be crushed. This world doesn’t care about what you want, Maria. It only cares about what you can take. And if you’re not strong enough to take it, someone else will.” I stared at him, my mind racing. Part of me wanted to scream, to lash out at him for even suggesting such a thing. But another part of me, a part I had tried to ignore, was intrigued. The idea of power, of control, was intoxicating. And if I was honest with myself, I was tired of feeling helpless. “Why are you doing this?” I asked, my voice trembling. “Why now?” His expression softened, just for a moment. “Because I see something in you, Maria. Something that reminds me of myself. You’re not like the others. You’re not content to sit back and let the world happen to you. You want to fight. And I can give you the tools to do it.” My chest heaved as I struggled to process his words. The room felt smaller, the air thicker, as if the weight of his proposal was pressing down on me. “And what happens if I say no?” I asked, my voice barely audible. His gaze didn’t waver. “Then you’ll remain a pawn. A tool for others to use as they see fit. But if you say yes…” He paused, his voice dropping to a whisper. “You could become something more. Something powerful.” My heart pounded in my chest, my mind racing with possibilities. The idea of becoming an assassin, of learning to fight, to kill, was terrifying. But the idea of remaining powerless, of being controlled by others, was even worse. I took a deep breath, my eyes locking onto his. “And if I agree… what happens next?” His smirk widened, and for the first time, there was a glimmer of something resembling warmth in his eyes. “Then we begin your training. And you’ll learn what it truly means to be a Von Grimm.” My chest tightened, but I didn’t look away. I knew this was a crossroads, a moment that would define the rest of my life. And as much as I hated to admit it, I knew what my answer would be. “Fine,” I said, my voice steady despite the turmoil inside me. “I’ll do it.” His smile was sharp, almost predatory. “Good. Then let’s begin.” As he turned and walked toward the door, I felt a shiver run down my spine. I had just made a deal with the devil, and I wasn’t sure if I would live to regret it. But one thing was certain—my life would never be the same.
