The rain had been falling since morning.
Amara stood beneath the narrow roof of a small café, watching cars rush through the wet streets. She held her phone tightly in one hand while staring at the message on the screen.
“Your interview has been cancelled. We will contact you if another position becomes available.”
She sighed.
It was the third rejection that week.
Amara had always believed that hard work could change her life. But lately, every door seemed to close just when she was ready to enter.
She slipped her phone into her bag and stepped into the rain.
Across the street, a black luxury car stopped.
The back door opened.
A tall young man stepped out.
He was dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit, his expression calm and unreadable. Even from a distance, Amara could tell he wasn't an ordinary businessman.
He was Adrian Blake—the young billionaire whose name appeared in business magazines almost every week.
Amara had heard stories about him.
Cold. Powerful. Impossible to impress.
But she had never expected their paths to cross.
As Adrian walked toward the building beside the café, a folder slipped from Amara's bag.
Papers scattered across the wet pavement.
“Oh no!”
She rushed down to pick them up.
Before she could gather the last few pages, a polished black shoe stopped beside one of them.
A hand picked it up.
“You dropped this.”
Amara looked up.
Her eyes met Adrian's.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
“Thank you,” she said quietly.
Adrian handed her the paper, but his eyes remained on her.
Then his expression changed.
He had noticed something on the page.
“Is this your résumé?”
Amara nodded.
“Yes.”
“You're looking for work?”
She hesitated.
“Yes.”
Adrian looked at her for another moment.
Then he said something that completely caught her off guard.
“I may have a job for you.”
Amara blinked.
“A job?”
“Yes. But there's one condition.”
Her curiosity grew.
“What condition?”
Adrian leaned slightly closer, his voice becoming serious.
“You must promise never to tell anyone about our arrangement.”
Amara stared at him.
“What kind of arrangement?”
Adrian's expression hardened.
“That,” he said, “is something you will have to decide whether you're willing to find out.”
He handed her his business card.
Then he walked back toward his car.
Amara looked down at the card.
ADRIAN BLAKE
BLAKE HOLDINGS
She looked up again.
The car was already disappearing into the rain.
She had no idea that accepting that mysterious offer would change her life forever.
And she certainly didn't know that Adrian Blake was hiding a secret that could destroy everything he had built.
A secret connected to a promise he had made years ago.
A promise he had never intended to break.
Until he met her.
