Chapter 3

910 Words
Jessica was already too late to stop it—the chat window blinked, revealing the other party’s response. “Hello, Jessica! I looked into that Lingyang stock you mentioned, and after thorough analysis, I’d say it’s a viable investment with promising future growth. However, the generous employee stock option policy might weigh on the share price somewhat.” Seeing his message, Jessica quickly replied with a simple line—“If it seems problematic, maybe you should consider a different stock.” “You’re right... I’ve actually been researching a few others. By the way! We’ve known each other for quite a while now, haven’t we?” “Somewhat, yes. Nearly two years, I believe.” “Shall we exchange photos?” At this point, the conversation might have ended. But Christina couldn’t resist adding a bold line of her own—“Alright, send me your photo first, and I’ll send you mine.” After hitting “Enter,” she turned to Jessica with a playful grin. “Oh, so you do have a close friend! You never mentioned him before. They say books hold beauty within their pages, but who knows, maybe your computer holds a charming prince?” she teased, her tone thick with irony. “Christina, we’re just friends, nothing more. Please don’t do this,” Jessica replied, her usual calm strained by frustration. “I have no intention of exchanging photos with Kaven.” Jessica’s uncharacteristic irritation took Christina by surprise. “Sis, I was only joking around. Don’t be so serious!” “Joking? You call this joking?” “Ah!? Well, it’s too late; he’s replied again…” “This doesn’t sound like something you’d usually say, but no worries—I'm not the type of shallow Taiwanese man you might imagine, nor am I some enormous King Kong. I’m fairly confident in my looks and wouldn’t mind a little challenge.” Jessica leaned closer, reaching out in an attempt to wrest the mouse from Christina’s hand, but her efforts were in vain. “Sis, this friend of yours sounds awfully full of himself. Now I’m genuinely curious—what does he look like?” “Turn it off,” Jessica said, her voice tinged with warning. “Oh, come on, sis! He sent a photo—might as well take a peek!” Without waiting for Jessica’s approval, Christina clicked “Accept,” allowing the image file to download and open on the screen. The moment the photo appeared, both sisters were left utterly speechless. Christina was the first to break the silence. “Sis, he…he’s so handsome! I mean, could this really be him, or is this some kind of prank? He looks dashing in a suit! But…wait, I think I’ve seen him somewhere before… Ah, I remember!” She clapped her hands in sudden realization. “Enough!” “Oh, don’t be like that. I know exactly who he is now! I saw his picture in a gossip magazine once. That’s Kaven, the young master of Lingkong Group. He’s worth billions, and he’s rumored to be the prime candidate to inherit the Lingkong empire… Sis, you’ve hooked a golden catch!” “I told you, we’re only friends.” Jessica tried to hide the subtle tremor in her voice, disguising her emotions as best as she could. “Well, if you’re just friends, then he’s up for grabs! He’s a hundred times better than my current boyfriend,” Christina declared, her tone as imperious as ever. “I…” “Jessica.” Christina’s gaze was piercing, her eyes fixed on her sister. “You’ll let me have him, right? You’ve always given me whatever I wanted since we were kids, haven’t you?” She pointed to the screen, her words more like a decree. “Sis, you wouldn’t be so selfish, would you? I promise, I only want him. Come on, sis!” Noting the hesitancy on Jessica’s face, she added another plea. “Do as you please,” Jessica replied, her voice cold and resigned. What else could she say at this point? Even if she admitted she liked Kaven, it would be futile, because whenever Christina desired something, she always made it her own. She didn’t want to compete with Christina—not only because she was accustomed to giving in to her, but also because she knew that anyone who met Christina would inevitably fall for her. “How long have you known Kaven?” “Over a year, maybe two. I’ve lost count.” “Oh, I’ll need to know a few details about your interactions if I’m going to assume your identity, right? From this moment on, I’m going to be you; do you understand?” “As you wish,” Jessica replied, her tone indifferent. “Have you ever told him your real name? Any personal details?” “So, you’re really planning to impersonate me…? No, I haven’t shared anything personal.” To Jessica, Kaven was just a friend she had met online, and now she was ready to let that connection slip away. She buried her emotions, trying to make peace with the situation. “That’s fantastic, sis… If I actually become Mrs. Lingkong, I’ll be grateful to you forever.” Her words barely paused, and her hand slid deftly over the mouse, clicking “Send File” and attaching a picture of herself in a swimsuit taken on an overseas vacation.
