Chapter 2

858 Words
Christina was a lively and exuberant spirit, radiating warmth and cheer wherever she went. She loved the outdoors, drawing energy from nature, the sun, and the laughter of those around her. Her life was like an endless summer, filled with gatherings, events, and an ever-growing circle of friends. People gravitated towards her, charmed by her brightness, and Christina basked in this attention, always craving more. Her enthusiasm was infectious, and wherever she went, the atmosphere seemed to grow lighter and livelier. In stark contrast, Jessica was as quiet and introspective as Christina was outgoing. She possessed a gentle shyness, a natural reticence that caused her to retreat into the solace of her room, where she would immerse herself in books and the music that became her companions. Jessica’s world was one of stillness and reflection, a quiet haven where she could indulge her thoughts undisturbed. She found comfort in solitude, her imagination thriving in the quiet corners of her mind, far from the social whirlwind Christina inhabited. Despite these opposing natures, they were twins to the core, sharing the same striking face, the same lithe figure, even the same graceful walk. Yet, even with these identical features, the differences between them were stark. The clearest distinction was in their style. Christina adorned herself in the latest fashions, an image of glamour and allure, wearing only the finest brands, as if each piece of clothing was an extension of her ambition to lead a life of wealth and privilege. She often spoke of her dreams of luxury, envisioning herself as the wife of a wealthy man, surrounded by opulence and status. “Who cares about all that?” Christina would exclaim dismissively whenever Jessica tried to share a quiet piece of her world. Where Jessica was diligent and modest, Christina was bold and carefree, never shy to criticize her sister’s choices. “You know, Jess, this obsession with studying is why you’re such a bookworm with those thick glasses. Honestly, if we walked out together, who would even believe you’re my sister?” Jessica looked up, unruffled by her sister’s teasing. “I am your sister, though.” “Yeah, yeah, as if I didn’t know that,” Christina replied dismissively, though her eyes sparkled with playful affection. “But, come on, sis! We haven’t sat down and talked like this in ages. Just the two of us.” “What do you want to talk about?” Jessica sighed, feeling the weight of the papers stacked on her desk, the grading that she knew would consume her night if she let it. Christina had always been somewhat spoiled, but Jessica had long ago resigned herself to indulging her younger sister’s whims. She hated conflict and found it easier to give in, choosing peace over resistance, which only seemed to encourage Christina further. She glanced at the mound of papers, knowing that another late night lay ahead. “Oh, come on, Jess! Don’t give me that look!” Christina’s eyes flashed with impatience, her sister’s focus on work irritating her. “You’re so wrapped up in those dusty old books; can’t you take an interest in something else for once? Men, for instance! You need to learn how to handle men, Jess. Otherwise, how will you ever master the art of charming them?” “I don’t need to learn any of that…” Jessica protested weakly, a headache beginning to pulse at her temples. “Oh, give me a break!” Christina wagged a perfectly manicured finger in Jessica’s direction, a mischievous glint in her eye. “Do you really think Confucius, Mencius, Laozi, or Li Bai could keep you company in your lonely old age? Or, heaven forbid, help you through those sleepless nights? They’ve all been dead for centuries! Sister, you need to wake up and see reality.” Jessica pushed her glasses up, unfazed. “Their wisdom is profound, worth a lifetime of study.” “Sure, whatever you say. But, if that’s the case, then what about your stock trading?” Christina’s gaze flicked to Jessica’s computer, where a trading platform was open. “Why bother with stocks?” “I… I want to stay aware of economic trends,” Jessica replied, fumbling slightly for words. “I don’t want to be entirely out of touch with the world.” Christina raised an eyebrow. “How much have you made, then?” Jessica hesitated. “Not much,” she admitted quietly. She was naturally frugal, her savings accumulated from her modest lifestyle. Investing in stocks was her way of dipping her toes into the world her sister seemed to understand so well, though it was more for the experience than any ambition to earn a fortune. Christina scoffed, rolling her eyes. “Honestly, Jess, you’re hopeless!” Just then, Christina noticed that Jessica’s computer screen was blinking with an open MSN chat window. Curious, she jumped up from the bed and leaned over Jessica’s desk, clicking the mouse and typing a message impulsively. “Christina!” Jessica’s voice held a note of exasperation, but Christina merely laughed, throwing a teasing glance over her shoulder.
