Chapter 6. The Frat House Party

(Alain Elwood’s Perspective)   Brandon kept laughing out loud like a bimbo. He provoked the others to laugh at his lame joke. And then he said, “Gosh, Rachel King! The leader of the Sorority club is now defeated. You should see your face when the Nerdy Mindy defeated you so easily!” “Hmm, the brainless hot chick, I like that,” Roy shouted after. Alain was just laughing along with them because he also thought it was pretty funny. “SHUT THE HELL UP!” She was mad when they kept on teasing her. “I can do better than that. Just watch it. When she comes back here, she will lose her face.” When she turned to see Alain was still giggling beside her, she nudged her elbow at him. She was kind of bulging her eyes out at him, annoyed. “Alain! You should have defended me!” Rachel snapped at him. Alain made a flat face when she pointed her emotion at him. And then he murmured, “Well, why should I? You’re not my girlfriend.” Rachel immediately stomped her feet on the floor. She whined and yelled out like a little kid when Alain was not on her side at all. “But I… I thought we have something between us!” Rachel exclaimed out. “Come on, Rachel. Give it a rest,” Alain sighed. “Oh, yeah, damn, just give her a chance, Alain! You get the hottest girl here. What are you waiting for?’ Brandon shouted after, teasing him. Alain could only chuckle out as he shook his head. “Hey, Rachel, if you ever get bored waiting for Alain to open his heart for you, just call me. You have my phone number, right?” Brandon teased her this time. “Ugh, dream on it!” Rachel mocked him in return. “I need more drink,” Alain shouted out as he raised from the couch. “ALAIN!” She exclaimed peevishly when he ignored her. Alain felt thirsty. All they had was just a bunch of beer bottles on the table. He needed water to wash his dry throat. Thereafter, he walked toward the kitchen in the corner of the house. There were many students in the room. He had to walk carefully to cross the corridor. As soon as he reached the arched door at the kitchen room, he saw that long reddish-brown hair girl again. “Hey, I didn’t know you’re still here,” he greeted her as he came into the kitchen. She jumped out of her feet. She was surprised when she heard his voice behind her. “Mindy Esmond, right?” He said carefully to her. He thought that he should be a little bit gentle to her since she kept giving her that defensive look. “What are you doing? Do you want to grab a drink?” He wondered when she was still standing in front of the white tall refrigerator. “Ugh, I… I…” she was stammering to talk. She didn’t look as brave as she was earlier. She still seemed taken aback to meet him here alone. The other students were in another room, enjoying the party. He was waiting for her to say something. He giggled when she looked nervous. “Hey, be easy. I won’t bite you here,” Alain tried to calm her down. She pretended to clear her throat. For a second, her eyes peeped at the arched door. Then she turned to see him again and said, “I… I know you won’t bite me.” He giggled, finding her kind of amusing. “Okay, then what are you doing there?” He walked closer to her. Mindy immediately bulged her eyes out at him. She looked defensive for sure. He giggled again when seeing her acting so weird. “Don’t come closer to me!” She warned him. “I don’t know what you’re thinking, but whatever it is, I just want to grab a bottle of water,” and as he walked closer to her, he stopped by to open the refrigerator’s door. She was surprised. She didn’t see it coming. She had thought something strange inside her head about him. She felt a little bit guilty about it though. She immediately tucked her hair behind her ear. She was being all awkward by herself. “Do you…” he looked at her for a second. He was hesitating, but eventually, he had to ask, “Do you want to drink water too?” “Yes, please, I want the cold water,” she asked firmly. It was obvious that she was still acting defensive against him. Surely, he still didn’t know what was her problem for acting like that. “Here you go,” he threw her the cold bottle he took from the refrigerator. And as he closed the refrigerator’s door, then he asked her, “Where is your friend? I thought I saw you came with her earlier.” “I’m waiting for her right now. She’s still in the bathroom,” Mindy answered him. Afterward, he quickly opened his bottle of water and gulped it down his throat. And suddenly, two boys who looked older than Alain came to the kitchen room. They looked half drunk when they walked in. “Oh, look at who we have here! The notorious biker of Alain Elwood!” One of them, the tallest one with spikey blonde hair shouted out loud. Alain immediately rolled his eyes. He was unwelcomed of his arrival here. “Just go home, loser,” Alain intentionally mocked him. “You’re too drunk to pick a fight with me right now.” Mindy instantly bulged her eyes out at him, surprised. “Who says I’m too drunk to pick a fight with you, huh?” That boy talked back, and his friend giggled along. “I’m Bryan. The best underground kiddo! I can fight you off right now on the floor if you want to—” “Gosh, what the hell?” Mindy muttered while staring at them back and forth. “I’m out of here if you guys want to make a scene.” But when she was walking toward the arched door, Bryan immediately pushed her off. She instantly pushed backward and bumped into Alain. “Hey, don’t do that,” Alain warned him. “Your problem is with me, not her.” Bryan and his friend chuckled out. Then he continued speaking, “Oh, wait a minute, is this your new girlfriend? I thought you were with the hot chick Rachel King.” “Shut up and just back off, Bryan,” Alain warned him once again. “I’m sure you don’t want to do this.” And then Alain immediately dragged Mindy behind him to protect her. He knew that Bryan was wild when he got drunk. “Girl, are you sure you want to be with him? Even Rachel doesn’t know what really happened with you last month, huh?” Bryan teased him. “Mind your own business, loser,” Alain warned him. Alain knew that Bryan hated him for a personal reason since he always beat him in the underground boxing competition. “Do you think you’re so powerful just because you can join the illegal motorcycle club, huh?” Bryan shouted after. He seemed out of his mind at the time. “But you’re involving yourself with the cops, it’s just not such a good idea, huh?” Mindy immediately glanced at Alain. She was trying to understand what Bryan just said. Alain sighed heavily. He just found out that the person who kept spreading the bad rumor about him was Bryan all along. “The cops caught one of the bikers last month. You got away because you sacrificed him,” Bryan muttered and chuckled annoyingly. “You don’t know what you’re talking about. You need to shut the hell up,” Alain snapped back cynically at him. Bryan was about to raise his fist at him, but luckily, Brandon came in time. He looked surprised to see Bryan was about to pick a fight with Alain. He quickly stopped him. “What the hell are you doing here, man?” Brandon confronted him. “This is our house. If you do anything to any of the frat members, I will kill you, man.” Bryan pursed his lips outward. He was trying to endure his resentment toward them. Then he tapped Brandon’s shoulder and said, “Just watch it, man. Watch your back.” Brandon immediately bushed off his hand roughly. He was disgusted by him. While Alain was still quiet as he watched Bryan carefully from across the kitchen’s table. And just at the right time, Brittany had returned from the bathroom. She came into the kitchen room to meet Mindy and asked her to go. Brittany wanted to buy the taco bread for her, and then they both would return to the dorm that night. And the atmosphere just felt pretty awkward in the room at the time. And thus why, Mindy left the room without saying anything to Alain and Brandon.
