(Mindy Esmond’s Perspective)   The next day, Mindy prepared her clothes, books, and some girl stuff to be brought with her to the university’s dorm. She was ready to move in and started her new life at college. Her mom helped to prepare her suitcase, while her dad would escort her by himself to the dorm. Once Mindy and her dad arrived at the university’s parking lot, she immediately came to the administration center to get her dorm’s key. She was about to share the happy news with Brittany that she finally moved into the dorm but turned out, it was like a coincidence, she went straight into the same room as her. Brittany glanced at her, who was bringing a suitcase and a brown box. She was hugely surprised to find Mindy coming into her room. “Oh, my Gosh! Mindy!” She exclaimed out. Her face instantly looked excited. Mindy’s mouth was half agape. She was also excited to see her best friend here. “It’s so amazing to get the same room as you! Oh, my gosh!” And when Mister Esmond came behind them while bringing a brown box as well, Brittany waved her hand at him. “Hey, this is my dad,” Mindy introduced him. Mister Esmond grinned at Brittany. “Look at there, you’ve got a pretty roommate.” “Dad, this is Brittany Parker. I told you yesterday,” Mindy reminded him. For a second, Brittany narrowed her eyebrows while smiling awkwardly. Then she whispered to Mindy, “What did you tell your dad about me?” Mister Esmond heard her. Then he immediately shouted after, “Mindy told me that she quickly makes new friends with you.” Brittany grinned happily. And then she quickly helped them, “Here, let me help.” As Brittany helped to bring over the boxes on Mindy’s new bed, Mindy dragged her suitcase to her new study desk. For a moment, Mindy looked around her new bedroom. She smiled and said, “I like this room. Plus, I have a great roommate.” “Huh, what else you could ask for?” Her dad teased her while giggling. “You and mom,” Mindy teased him back. “Oh, I will miss you both so much! I just hope you wouldn’t leave for so long!” “Sorry, darling, but the reality needs money. Your mom and I have to work hard to earn money to pay for your tuition fees,” her dad said. Brittany stole a glance at them from the edge of her own bed. “And Washington DC is far from Philadelphia. I will miss you guys,” Mindy muttered. Her dad immediately hugged her tightly and kissed her cheeks. Then he murmured, “Mindy, you still have four days to come home and see us before we will go to the airport.” “Okay, Dad,” she nodded. “I will definitely come to see you and mom until Saturday.” *** Around five p.m. in the afternoon, Mindy had cleaned up her side of the bed. At the time, Brittany had just done taken a shower. As soon as she walked out of the bathroom, Brittany said, “Hey, Mindy, do you want to join the frat house party this evening?” Mindy immediately put down her book on the bed and glanced at Brittany. Then she said, “The frat house party? Is it that stupid lame party that every student celebrates once in a while?” Brittany giggled as she opened her closet. And then she said, “Well, the seniors seem to enjoy it. Do you remember when I told you that my previous roommate was a senior?” Mindy paused to see her as she pursed her lips outward. Then Brittany continued telling her, “Yeah, she invited me in. So, I thought I should ask you to accompany me there. I just don’t want to be alone.” “I’d rather staying on my bed and continue reading Shakespeare’s book than joining the stupid party with the stupid people,” Mindy muttered as she turned to open the book again. Brittany immediately slid herself to her bed, scaring Mindy. “Oh, come on!” Brittany exclaimed out. She made a puppy face while begging her to come. “What? No!” Mindy refused. “I don’t do party, Britt.” “Why?” Brittany didn’t understand. “Because I’m a smart-arse student. I study and read a book all day to get straight A,” Mindy was just trying to reason with her. Brittany still stared in disbelief at Mindy. Then Mindy glanced at her and said again, “No smart students do lame party. Come on.” “You don’t even know if the party will be lame or not. You should come and see it for yourself,” Brittany still persuaded her. Mindy was persistently shaking her head. She refused to come. “Anyway, the fraternity club has always been having a student party in their frat house every week. It’s going to be awesome with games and drinks all over the place,” Brittany informed her. “We can have fun together there.” “And there will be the dumb jocks that bully me,” Mindy reminded her. “Come on, please. Do it for me,” Brittany begged her once again. “I really want to see how the fraternity club looks like there.” Mindy rolled her eyes, annoyed. “Seriously? And then what?” “And then, I will treat you there. I heard the fraternity sells a yummy taco bread. Come on, just bear it with me—” Brittany spoke energetically. Mindy felt defeated when Brittany kept giving her a silly puppy dog face again and again. She finally nodded to agree. “Fine! Whatever! I’ll get dress now!” *** The frat house party in the evening looked so damn crowded. Everyone really came to fill the void here. And it seemed that everyone enjoyed the stupid party, except for Mindy. She was looking around for a moment. She didn’t find this place to be attractive at all. And the fraternity was exclusively for boys. The people who ran this big house were a group of college boys who chose to live together. Once she entered the living room with Brittany, she saw a bunch of students partying and dancing together. Mindy pursed her lips defensively when watching the people who had so much fun there. And then she said to her best friend, “Ugh, look at this place! Such a fricking mess!” Brittany chuckled out and said back, “Come on, Mindy. Hold on there. I will buy you the yummy taco bread as I have promised you.” Before Brittany left the room, Mindy grabbed her arm and shouted out, “Britt! There are the dumb jocks here.” “Ugh, yeah, and they are hitting with the hot chicks,” Brittany added as she stared out at the middle of the room, where those people sat down together on the couch. Just when the two of them were about to leave, those boys noticed their arrival here. Roy immediately shouted out at them, “Hey, guys! Please welcome our geeky girls here! Please kindly make a room for them!” While the three hot chicks that were sitting down with the boys looked at them, disgusted. As Brandon glanced at them, he shouted out as well, “Nerdy Mindy! I miss you, Babe!” Mindy rolled her eyes and shook her head, annoyed. “Gosh, they never give it a rest, huh? They keep on teasing me like that!” Brittany sighed heavily. “I told you, these pricks sometimes need to be taught well.” Mindy chuckled. But what Brittany said gave her an idea. Then she quickly said to her, “Do you want to see me teaching them well? Alright—” When seeing Mindy came over to see them, Brittany shouted out alertly, “Mindy! What the hell are you doing?” Brittany quickly followed her pace to approach those people in the next room. When they finally got there, Mindy was surprised to see Alain was sitting with one of the hot chicks. She didn’t see him sitting on another sofa behind the wall there. For a second, Mindy and Alain exchanged a glance at each other. Mindy quickly blinked her eyes and looked away. Then she stared firmly at Brandon and muttered, “Can you stop making fun of me? I got enough of your stupid joke that isn’t even funny at all.” “Why? Everyone’s laughing at my joke. That’s funny enough then,” Brandon said. And his friends immediately laughed along. “Ugh, who is this nerd?” One of the hot chicks muttered. She was blonde and wearing a skin-tight dress. She kept staring disgustedly at her from head to toe. “By the way, I’m Mindy Esmond, and I’m a freshman student,” she introduced herself proudly. Then she looked at her best friend and said, “And this is Britt, my roommate.” “Gosh, Alain, would you look at these nerd girls? Their fashion style is just so dumb-looking,” the blonde girl muttered again. For a second, Mindy looked at her own clothes, which were just a simple plain long sleeve shirt covered with a dark vest and skinny jeans. While Brittany dressed in a vintage Bohemian blouse and denim jeans. Mindy smirked at her. Then she snapped, “We may not be fashionable in a sense, but we don’t have a dumb-looking face like you are, Malibu Doll.” “Ouch, that’s a good one!” Brandon shouted out and laughed along with the others. “Rachel, you are knocked down! She outsmarts you!” Roy provoked her. That Malibu Doll girl named Rachel immediately chuckled sarcastically and muttered, “You are so not getting into our club!” Mindy smirked and shook her head. Then she said, “No offense, but we are not interested in joining your stupid club, thanks.” “Yeah, that’s right,” Brittany chuckled beside her. She was proud of Mindy’s courage to face those bullies. “Get out! You are so not invited here!” Rachel barked at them. She felt offended. Mindy smiled happily. Then she immediately dragged Brittany out of the room.
