(Mindy Esmond’s Perspective)
On Tuesday, after class had ended, Mindy spent her whole afternoon laying down lazily on her bed. She didn’t feel to go anywhere but reading a book and enjoying the afternoon view at her dorm’s window.
Brittany just returned from the mini-market nearby. She bought her some snacks and cold orange drinks.
As soon as Brittany threw the orange bottle to her, then she said, “Are you ready for the Scavenger Hunt festival tomorrow?”
“What scavenger hunt?” Mindy muttered lazily.
“Ouch, didn’t you hear the announcement last week?” Brittany wondered as she sat down on her own bed, which was located oppositely from Mindy’s bed.
Then Mindy slightly glanced at her. “No, do I care?”
“Oh, come on, Mindy! It’s an obligatory event. Every English student has to join the event tomorrow. We should be getting on the bus by nine sharp,” Brittany informed her.
Mindy rolled her eyes. She was literally not interested in joining an outdoor event.
And then Brittany reminded her, “You will go. Or you won’t get any extra score from Mister Saltzman.”
Mindy instantly sat on her bed. Then she glanced at her attentively. “Wait, I thought Mister Saltzman has been sick since Monday. He won’t go, right?”
“Even if he doesn’t go, he will have a substitute to take care of his part in the event,” Brittany murmured. “And the last time I check, he is getting better now.”
Mindy narrowed her brown eyebrows wonderingly. “Where did you check him out?”
Brittany quickly exclaimed out, “Don’t think weird of me! I’m not stalkering him. My ex-roommate told me when I asked her this morning. She has a class with him every Tuesday.”
Mindy tried to recall the ex-roommate that Brittany referred to, “The senior?”
Brittany immediately nodded. “Yup, she is a senior in UPenn. She’s also an English student like us. She’s in her sophomore year.”
And then they heard someone knocked at the door.
They both immediately exchanged a glance. And Mindy wondered who would be looking for any of them here. “Who is that?”
“Only one way to find out,” said Brittany as she quickly raised from her bed and walked to open the door.
As soon as the door was opened, they both saw a tall blonde hair female standing still at the door while waving her skinny hand at Brittany.
“Hey, Olive!” Brittany seemed excited when greeting her. “I was just talking about you with Mindy here.”
When Brittany slightly glanced to see Mindy, she smiled widely.
Meanwhile, on the bed, Mindy pinched her eyes at the two of them at the doorsill.
Olive peeped at the room to see Mindy for herself. Then she smiled nicely at her and said, “Hey, Mindy! I’m Olive Jones, Brittany’s ex-roommate.”
Mindy obscurely heard Olive whispered to Brittany, “What did you guys talk about me?”
They both giggled along once Brittany told her.
Mindy immediately raised from her bed to approach them at the door. “Hey, Olive, I’m Mindy. It’s nice to finally meet you. Why don’t you come in?”
Olive smiled at her and said, “Ugh, I actually want to invite you guys to grab coffees and snacks together. What do you say?”
Brittany quickly nodded. “Oh, yes, I’m in.”
Afterward, they both stared back at Mindy to wait for what she said.
Mindy looked at them blankly. As she blinked awkwardly, then she said, “Ugh, okay—”
“Come on, is that a yes?” Olive asked wonderingly.
For a second, Mindy chuckled at their enthusiasm.
“Well, Brittany just bought me snacks and cold drinks, but—”
When Brittany and Olive kept giving her pressure when staring at her solemnly, then she chuckled again. She felt defeated.
Then she finally nodded and said, “Yes, count me in, please.”
“Awesome! Let’s go, guys! Come on!” Olive exclaimed out excitedly.
Brittany hurriedly grabbed her bohemian sling bag. And as soon as Mindy grabbed her denim jacket and brown sling bag, they went out together.

Olive was inviting the two of them to hang out in a cozy small coffee shop near the campus area, which was called The Eatery Pub.
As soon as they entered the lobby, they could smell the strong coffee beans aroma there. The background of hip-hop music was also great. The energetic friendly atmosphere felt nice for everyone to hang out together in the warm afternoon.
After they sat at the table near the glass window, Olive immediately raised her hand to call out for a waitress. The three of them ordered the same milky coffees and chocolate pastries.
Once the waitress went away to take their orders, soon after, Olive recognized the girls that sat down in the middle of the room.
“Look at the three o’clock, the Queens of Sorority Club is here, ugh—” Olive muttered disgustedly while stealing a glance at those clique girls.
Brittany and Mindy immediately followed where she was staring at. As soon as they saw those girls had fun at the table, they smirked concurrently.
“Gosh, it’s like they are everywhere,” Mindy muttered as well.
“That’s because they are the popular hot chicks. They can do anything they want. Get whatever they want. Gosh, I’m a jealous prick sometimes,” Brittany chuckled out to herself.
Olive quickly shouted after, “You can’t ever compare yourself with the people like Rachel, Shelby, and Stacy.”
Brittany and Mindy instantly narrowed their eyes at her.
Olive chuckled. “Hey, don’t take it the wrong way, Britt. It’s a compliment from me. Why would you ever want to compare yourself with the brainless hot chicks like them?”
Mindy instantly laughed out loud. Everyone in the room glanced in her direction, including those clique girls.
“Ups, sorry, did I laugh so hard?” Mindy whispered and giggled.
Brittany and Olive giggled along with her as they nodded their heads.
Olive continued talking, “I mean, just look at them—”
This time, Rachel caught them stealing a glance at her table. She immediately whispered something to her clique friends.
At the same time, Olive said, “A girl can have a pretty face, but without a brain and an attitude, nobody’s going to like you in the real world.”
“Are you saying that those girls are living in a dreamland then?” Mindy wondered.
Brittany chuckled and shouted after, “The way I see it, I think so.”
Olive also nodded her head agreeably. Then she said, “They are just so fake.”
“I can tell,” Mindy murmured.
As they were waiting for their coffees and pastries to come, Mindy was thinking about something. When she stole a glance at those girls again, then she turned to see Olive, then she asked her curiously, “What are their names again? And how do you know so well about them?”
“They are Rachel King, Shelby Sheldon, and Stacy Sheldon,” Olive informed her fluently. “The Sheldon are cousins to each other, while Rachel is the current leader of the Sorority Club on the campus. And how do I know them so well?” Olive chuckled out for a second.
Mindy narrowed her eyes curiously at her.
Brittany quickly added, “Well, that’s because Olive used to join the club with them.”
Olive nodded and said, “Yeah, but I bailed. I just couldn’t take their stupid dramas all the time. It’s like they will pick a fight in everything they come across with, you know.”
Brittany added again, “Plus, just like what Olive has said earlier; they are the annoying chick girls that only care about their pretty looks, but unfortunately, brainless.”
Soon after, the waitress served their milky coffees and three chocolate pastries at their table. When they started eating their pastries, all of a sudden, Rachel and her two friends came to their table.
Those girls were smirking annoyingly as they approached the table. Rachel was crossing her arms on her chest while Shelby and Stacy were flirting with their dark long hair.
“Excuse me, ladies,” Rachel greeted them.
Olive smirked too as she shouted back, “What do you want, Ms. King?”
Rachel sighed and snapped, “Gosh, give it a rest, Oliver—”
“It’s Olive, by the way,” Olive quickly corrected her.
“Whatever, I’m not here to talk to you,” Rachel muttered.
When Olive and Brittany were aware of what Rachel meant, they immediately followed her stare. Rachel was staring coldly at Mindy.
Mindy narrowed her eyebrows. She felt baffled when everyone stared in her direction. And then she shouted out, “What is it? Do you have something important to tell me?”
“You should be polite with your senior, little girl,” Rachel admonished her. “And remember, I won’t forget what you did last night at the frat house.”
Mindy shook her head bewilderingly. “What the—”
Olive pinched her eyes at Mindy, wondering what happened.
Mindy immediately shrugged her shoulders and snapped out at Rachel, “What the hell did I do to you last night?”
“Don’t play amnesia with me. I have the boys who witnessed what you did to me. And your loser friend here also came last night,” Rachel muttered as she nodded her chin at Brittany.
“Hey, watch out your mouth,” Mindy scolded her.
Rachel chuckled cynically. “What? Aren’t you two losers?”
“Come on, Rachel. These girls are only juniors. You need to leave them out of your drama,” Olive warned her.
“Shut up and don’t middle,” Rachel snarled peevishly. “This girl names Nerdy Mindy was mocking me in the face last night. And I can’t accept it!”
“Gosh, I thought we’re done. And so, what?” Mindy confronted her.
“This is only the beginning, Miss Nerdy,” Rachel warned her cautiously. “Just watch your back. I won’t let you go.”
Shelby and Stacy giggled along. And as soon as they walked away from the Eatery Pub, Mindy exchanged a silent stare with Brittany and Olive.
She knew there was a horror show that would be waiting for her in the near future.
