Unspoken Agreements

The crisp morning air lingered through the open French windows of the penthouse suite, brushing against Ariana's bare skin like a gentle whisper. Sunlight filtered in, casting golden patterns across the floor and wrapping her in a glow she barely felt worthy of. She stood in Damien Wolfe's penthouse—again—not as an intern, not even as a one-night mistake, but as the mother of his unborn child. The silence between them was loaded. Damien sat on the edge of the long leather couch, shirtless, his head buried in his hands. Ariana hovered near the kitchen island, clutching a glass of water like it was the only thing anchoring her to the earth. "I should go," she said, voice small but clear. Damien didn't look up. "You're not going anywhere." Her grip on the glass tightened. "I can't stay here. This isn't... this isn't right." Now he did look at her—those steel-gray eyes, unreadable as always, pinned her in place. "You're carrying my child, Ariana. Nothing will ever be the same again." A bitter laugh escaped her lips. "Yeah, I figured that out somewhere between the third and fourth pregnancy test." His mouth quirked slightly, a shadow of a smile—almost amused. But he stood, walked over to her, and gently removed the glass from her hand. His touch was warm, confident, and far too familiar. "Sit," he said. "Don't command me." "Then consider it a request." Reluctantly, Ariana allowed him to guide her to the couch. She sat, back stiff, hands in her lap. Damien took the seat opposite her, elbows on his knees. "I need to know what you want." That startled her. No man had ever asked her that—not her absent father, not her cold ex-boyfriend, not even her professors when she’d asked for extensions on assignments because she was juggling two jobs. "What I want? I want to disappear. I want to go back in time. I want to not be pregnant by my billionaire boss who doesn't believe in relationships." He let her vent. She appreciated that. "But," she continued, quieter now, "since I can’t have any of those things… I want to be respected. I want to raise this baby in peace. I want to finish college. And I want to do all of that without being smothered." He nodded slowly. "I can make all of that happen." She blinked. "What?" "Whatever you need—housing, tuition, health care—it’s yours. You won’t lift a finger." "That's not what I meant," she snapped. "I’m not some kept woman, Damien. I’m not for sale." He leaned back, hands raised in mock surrender. "I didn’t say you were. I just want to help." The quiet that followed was different this time—softer. The weight of their situation settled between them like fog. "What about you?" she asked, after a beat. "What do you want?" Damien's gaze turned distant. "I never wanted a family. Never thought I’d be good at it. My father—he was cruel. My mother left. I learned not to need anyone." Ariana’s heart ached for him, even when she didn’t want to. "But then you showed up," he said, voice low. "And now everything I thought I knew is falling apart." She hated that she liked hearing that. Just then, his phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen, frowned, and stood. "I need to take this. Stay here. Please." She nodded. As Damien stepped into his office, Ariana stared at the city skyline. So much beauty. So much uncertainty. --- Inside his office, Damien answered the call. "Talk." "There’s movement at the board," his assistant said. "Philip Lancaster has called for a private meeting." Damien swore under his breath. "He’s trying to unseat me." "That’s the theory. And there's chatter about your... personal life." Damien’s grip tightened on the phone. "Handle it. Discredit the leaks. If anyone talks, I want them buried in NDAs." "Understood." When he returned to the living room, Ariana was standing with her hand on her belly. "Everything okay?" she asked. He softened. "No. But I’ll fix it. That’s what I do." She studied him, searching for the man behind the money. Behind the mistakes. Maybe, just maybe, they’d figure this out. Together. ---
