Chapter 3 – New Friends, New Enemies

705 Words
The following morning, Christian woke before sunrise, determined not to let yesterday's disappointments define his future. The tiny apartment was still dark, and the air was cool. After saying a short prayer, he dressed in his clean but inexpensive clothes, grabbed the last piece of bread on the table, and stepped outside. The streets of Metropolis were already coming alive as workers hurried to their jobs. Christian took a deep breath and whispered to himself, "I only need one opportunity. One chance is enough to change everything." He spent several hours walking from one business to another, asking if they were hiring. Just as he was beginning to lose hope, he noticed a small café on a quiet street. A handwritten sign hung on the front door. HELP WANTED – PART-TIME ASSISTANT Without hesitation, Christian walked inside and greeted the owner politely. "Good morning, sir." An elderly man with kind eyes looked up from behind the counter and smiled warmly. "Looking for work?" he asked. "Yes, sir," Christian replied respectfully. "I'm willing to do any honest job." The old man studied him for a moment before extending his hand. "My name is Mr. Daniel. The pay isn't much, and the work is demanding, but if you're ready to work hard, you're hired." Christian's face lit up with joy. "Thank you so much, sir. I promise I won't disappoint you." For the first time since arriving in Metropolis, someone had believed in him without asking about his background or judging his appearance. Days turned into weeks, and Christian poured his heart into every task. He cleaned tables, washed dishes, served customers with a smile, carried heavy supplies, and even helped organise deliveries. No matter how tired he became, he never complained. His honesty and dedication earned the respect of regular customers and his fellow workers. Among the staff was a cheerful young woman named Sophia. She admired Christian's positive attitude and hardworking spirit. One afternoon, while taking a short break, she smiled and asked, "How do you always manage to smile, even after working all day?" Christian chuckled softly. "Giving up has never solved anyone's problems. As long as I'm alive, there's always hope." Sophia nodded with admiration, and before long, the two became close friends. Their conversations made the long working hours easier, and Mr. Daniel was pleased to see the friendly atmosphere in his café. However, not everyone welcomed Christian's presence. One busy afternoon, several wealthy young men entered the café wearing designer suits, expensive watches, and confident smiles. Their leader was Ethan Cole, the proud and arrogant son of one of Metropolis's most influential businessmen. As Christian politely served their drinks, Ethan looked down at his worn-out shoes and laughed. "So this is the best job you could find?" he mocked. "People like you will spend their entire lives serving people like us." His friends burst into laughter. Christian remained calm. "I'm only doing my job, sir." Ethan stepped closer, his expression cold. "Good. Then never forget who stands above you." The café became silent. Sophia watched nervously, while Mr. Daniel observed from behind the counter. Instead of arguing, Christian quietly picked up his serving tray and continued working as though nothing had happened. His calm response only made Ethan angrier. "This isn't over," Ethan said before storming out with his friends. After they left, Mr. Daniel sighed. "Young man, you've just made a powerful enemy." Christian smiled peacefully. "I didn't come to Metropolis to make enemies, but I won't be afraid of them either." Across the street, a black luxury sedan remained parked unnoticed. Inside, one of Matthew Adams' trusted bodyguards had witnessed the entire confrontation. He immediately called his employer. "Sir," he reported, "Young Master has encountered his first real enemy." Matthew Adams looked out of the window of his office and replied calmly, "Good. Every future leader must learn that success always attracts enemies." Meanwhile, Ethan clenched his fists as his car sped through the city. "No one embarrasses me and gets away with it," he growled. "I'll make Christian Adams regret ever coming to Metropolis." Without realising it, Christian had taken the first step into a battle that would change both his life and the fate of the city.
