Chapter 5 – Betrayal

687 Words
A month had passed since Christian arrived in Metropolis. Life was still far from perfect, but it was finally beginning to improve. Every morning, he arrived at Mr. Daniel's café before sunrise, cleaned the tables, prepared the coffee machines, and welcomed every customer with a warm smile. His honesty and dedication had earned him the respect of his co-workers, while the regular customers had started asking for him by name. More importantly, he had found true friends. Sophia often helped him after work, and Ryan had become like a brother to him. They laughed together, shared meals, and encouraged one another through life's struggles. For the first time since leaving home, Christian no longer felt completely alone. One rainy evening, Ryan burst into the café looking pale and frightened. "Christian," he said, struggling to catch his breath, "I need your help." Christian immediately put down the tray he was carrying. "What happened?" "My mother collapsed this afternoon. She's in the hospital, and the doctors won't begin treatment until I pay the bill. I've tried everyone I know, but no one can help." Without saying a word, Christian reached into his pocket and pulled out every naira he had saved over the past month. It wasn't a fortune, but it represented countless hours of hard work. He placed the money into Ryan's trembling hands. "It's all I have," Christian said softly. "Go and save your mother." Ryan stared at him in disbelief. "You've been saving this for yourself." "I can always earn more money," Christian replied with a smile. "A life cannot be replaced." Ryan's eyes filled with tears. "I'll pay you back. I promise." "Don't worry about that now. Your mother needs you." Sophia watched the exchange from across the room. Her admiration for Christian grew even stronger. "You're different from everyone I've ever met," she said after Ryan left. Christian smiled gently. "I only do what I hope someone would do for me." The following morning, Christian arrived at the café expecting another ordinary day. Instead, two police cars were parked outside. Several officers stood at the entrance. Customers whispered nervously as Christian approached. One officer stepped forward. "Are you Christian Adams?" "Yes." "You're under arrest for stealing money from this café." Christian froze. "What? There must be some mistake." Mr. Daniel stepped forward with sadness written across his face. "The café's safe was emptied last night," he said quietly. "Someone stole all the money." The officers searched the employees' lockers. When they opened Christian's locker, everyone gasped. Inside was a thick bundle of cash. The officer held it up. "We've found the stolen money." Christian stared at it in complete shock. "I've never seen that money before! Someone planted it there!" But his words fell on deaf ears. The officers handcuffed him as customers watched in silence. Across the street, hidden behind a newspaper, Ethan Cole smiled. "It worked perfectly," he whispered to his companion. "Now everyone thinks he's a thief." At the police station, Christian endured hours of questioning. The lead investigator leaned across the table. "Confess, and this will be easier." "I didn't steal anything." "Then explain the money in your locker." Christian lowered his head. He couldn't explain it because he had been framed. Late that night, a sleek black luxury car stopped outside the station. Inside sat Matthew Adams. One of his bodyguards spoke softly. "Sir, shall we help him? One phone call will end this." Matthew looked at his son through the window. "No. If Christian cannot fight for the truth himself, he is not yet ready to lead the Adams Family." The car disappeared into the night. Alone inside his cell, Christian remembered his father's words. "The strongest people are not those who never fall. They are the ones who rise after every fall." Slowly, he stood and clenched his fists. "I will clear my name," he whispered with unwavering determination. "No matter who is behind this." Outside the station, hidden in the darkness, a mysterious man ended a phone call. "The plan is working," he said. "But don't underestimate him." "The heir is far stronger than we expected."
