Chapter 8 – A Heart Worth Protecting

795 Words
The attack left Christian with more questions than answers. As he lay awake that night, he replayed every moment in his mind. The masked men had clearly been waiting for him, and their attack had not been random. Someone had sent them, but who? And why? He had made no enemies since arriving in Metropolis—or so he believed. Though the mystery weighed heavily on him, Christian refused to let fear control his life. Whatever danger lay ahead, he would face it with courage. The next morning, he arrived at Mr. Daniel's café as usual. His body still ached from the previous night's assault, but he forced himself to smile as he greeted customers and swept the floor. He was determined not to let anyone see how much pain he was in. Sophia noticed the bruises on his face almost immediately. "What happened to you?" she asked, her voice filled with concern. Christian smiled lightly. "I had a little trouble on my way home." She folded her arms and frowned. "A little trouble doesn't leave bruises like that." Christian chuckled softly. "Don't worry. I'm tougher than I look." Sophia sighed. She knew he was hiding something, but she also respected his decision not to talk about it. Instead, she simply handed him a cup of hot coffee. "At least promise you'll be careful." "I promise," Christian replied gratefully. After work, Sophia approached him with an excited smile. "There's a food festival in the city tonight. You spend all your time working. Come with me and relax for once." Christian hesitated. Money was still tight, and he felt guilty spending time away from work. But after seeing the hopeful expression on Sophia's face, he finally nodded. "Alright. It sounds nice." That evening, the festival was alive with music, colourful lights, delicious food, and cheerful laughter. Families, couples, and friends filled the streets, enjoying performances and games. For the first time since leaving home, Christian allowed himself to forget his struggles. He laughed, tried different foods, and even won a small stuffed toy at one of the game stalls, which he jokingly handed to Sophia. As they walked through the lively crowd, Sophia glanced at him. "You know, you're different from everyone I've met." Christian smiled. "Different how?" "You never complain. Even when life is difficult, you still help people and treat everyone with kindness." Christian looked down thoughtfully. "My father always taught me that character is worth more than money. Wealth can disappear, but integrity stays with you forever." Sophia smiled warmly. "Your father must be an extraordinary man." "He is," Christian replied quietly, his eyes filled with respect. Unknown to them, a black luxury car was parked across the street. Inside sat Ethan Cole, watching every moment with growing jealousy. "So that's the girl he's close to," Ethan muttered. One of his bodyguards leaned forward. "Should we teach him another lesson?" Ethan's lips curled into a cold smile. "No. If Christian won't break, we'll go after the people he cares about." As the festival came to an end, Christian and Sophia began walking home. Suddenly, a frightened scream echoed through the street. A little boy had wandered into the road, completely unaware of a speeding truck racing towards him. Without thinking, Christian sprinted into the street. He grabbed the terrified child and threw both of them onto the pavement just seconds before the truck thundered past. The crowd gasped in shock. The boy's mother rushed over, tears streaming down her face as she hugged her son tightly. "Thank you! You saved my little boy!" Christian stood up slowly, brushing the dust from his clothes despite the pain in his injured body. "He's safe. That's all that matters." The crowd broke into applause, praising his bravery. Sophia looked at Christian with admiration. At that moment, she realised he wasn't simply a kind man. He was someone willing to risk his own life to save a complete stranger. Later that night, Matthew Adams received another report. "Young Master risked his life to save a child today." Matthew smiled proudly as he closed the file. "Wealth may make a man powerful," he said quietly, "but only compassion makes him worthy of leading others." Meanwhile, in a dark office across the city, Victor Kane listened to the latest report with narrowed eyes. "So... Christian continues to earn people's respect wherever he goes." He leaned back in his chair before picking up his phone. "Prepare the next phase," he ordered coldly. "This time... there must be no mistakes." Far away, Christian stood by the window of his small apartment, gazing at the city lights. He had no idea that an even greater storm was approaching—one that would test his courage, his heart, and everything he believed in.
