Under The Spotlight

The early morning sunlight slanted through the glass walls of the conference room, but Ava barely noticed. Her palms were clammy as she ran through her notes one last time, eyes scanning bullet points that blurred into each other. “Remember: calm, concise, confident,” Grace coached softly from across the table, laptop open, fingers poised over the keyboard to monitor the live feed. “This isn’t just about the merger. It’s about you — the face of this company’s future.” Ava’s throat tightened. She swallowed hard. The weight of the headline — Hawthorne’s New Favorite — still lingered like a shadow behind every question she imagined. “You ready?” Grace asked. “Ready as I’ll ever be.” The production crew called them to set up. Lights flicked on, cameras tilted, and the host’s booming voice echoed through the waiting room. “Live in 3… 2… 1…” Ava adjusted the lapel mic, smoothed her blazer, and took a deep breath. The red light blinked on. “Good morning, viewers,” the host began. “Today, we have a special guest — Ava Carter, recently appointed liaison for the high-profile Pentrix Global and Hawthorne merger. Ms. Carter, welcome.” “Thank you. It’s good to be here,” Ava replied, voice steady but her heart pounding beneath the surface. The questions came fast and sharp — about the merger timeline, the security breach, and, inevitably, about her relationship with Liam Hawthorne. “You’re seen as a rising star, Ms. Carter, but some say your rapid ascent is tied more to your personal connection with Mr. Hawthorne than to your qualifications. What do you say to that?” Ava’s pulse spiked. She chose her words carefully. “My work stands on its own merits,” she said evenly. “I’m here because of my dedication, my skills, and my results — not rumors or headlines.” The host smiled, sensing the tension. “Bold answer for someone so new. But how do you handle the pressure — from the public, the media, and within the company?” Ava paused, then replied honestly, “Pressure is part of the job. The real challenge is making sure it doesn’t define you.” Behind the camera, Grace nodded approvingly. After the interview, Ava felt a wave of relief and exhaustion crash over her. She had faced the storm head-on — but the real question remained: had she earned her place, or was she still just a headline waiting to be rewritten? The moment the red light switched off, Ava’s shoulders slumped as if the weight of the world had finally caught up with her. The conference room was quiet except for the soft clicking of Grace’s laptop keys as she began drafting their social media response. “You did great,” Grace said, breaking the silence. “You handled the personal questions like a pro.” Ava gave a small, tired smile but felt anything but victorious. The questions had felt like verbal punches, each one landing harder than the last. She could almost see the social media chatter swirling already — half-sympathy, half-skepticism. Liam’s words from the day before echoed in her mind: If they think you got here because of me, make sure they leave knowing it was in spite of me. How could she prove that now? The phone on the desk buzzed sharply. Ava glanced at the screen — a message from an unknown number. “Meet me at the lobby in 10. We need to talk.” She frowned. No name. No context. Just urgent. Grace noticed her hesitation. “Should I come with you?” “No,” Ava said quickly, pocketing the phone. “I’ll be fine.” Ten minutes later, Ava descended the gleaming elevator to the lobby, where the bustling noise of the building’s busy day was just beginning. Near the entrance stood a tall man in a tailored suit, his expression unreadable but his eyes sharp. “Ava Carter?” he asked, voice low. “Yes. Who are you?” He pulled out a badge. “I’m Eric Dalton. I handle corporate security at Pentrix.” Her heart skipped. “Is this about the leak?” He nodded. “Partly. But also something more. You’re at risk — not just professionally, but personally.” Ava’s brow furrowed. “I don’t understand.” “Your sudden rise and close ties with Liam have stirred some serious envy and resentment. People who want to see you fail. Worse, some want to use this situation to get to Hawthorne himself.” The words hit like a punch to the gut. “I thought I was just navigating office politics,” Ava whispered. “This is bigger. You’re in a high-stakes game now.” Eric glanced around, lowering his voice. “There’s a rumor going around that someone planted the leak to discredit you. To force you out.” “Why would anyone do that?” Ava asked, voice trembling. “Because you’re a threat — to the old guard, to competitors, to people who thought they controlled the narrative.” Ava swallowed hard, the pressure crushing her from all sides. It wasn’t just the media anymore. It was internal, dangerous, and personal. “Thank you for telling me,” she said, trying to steady her voice. Eric nodded. “Be careful who you trust.” As he disappeared into the crowd, Ava felt a cold knot form in her stomach. The merger, the media, the whispers — it was all unraveling faster than she could control. Back in her office, Ava’s phone buzzed again. This time, it was Liam. She hesitated, then answered. “Liam,” she said quietly. “We need to talk. Now.” The line went dead. Her fingers trembled around the phone. Whatever was coming next, she knew it wouldn’t be easy. But one thing was clear: the rules had changed. And so had the stakes. ---
