Chapter 26: The Unexpected Visitor

938 Words
The hospital hallway felt more familiar the second time. The group walked together in a loose line, their footsteps quieter than before. The late afternoon sun filtered through the tall windows, casting warm light across the polished floor. Nurses moved past with gentle smiles, and the steady hum of hospital activity filled the air. Jake looked around nervously. “I still don’t like hospitals,” he whispered. Grace glanced at him. “Nobody does.” Sophie held a small paper bag in her hands. Inside were snacks and a get-well card the group had signed during lunch. Ryan carried a bottle of juice. Noah walked calmly at the front. Ethan and Lily stayed side by side near the middle. They reached Tyler’s room. Ethan paused for a moment before knocking lightly. “Come in,” a voice called. He pushed the door open. Tyler sat upright in bed this time, his leg still secured in a thick brace. The television played quietly in the background, but he wasn’t watching it. He looked bored more than anything else. When he saw them, his eyes widened. “You guys came back,” he said. Jake stepped inside first. “Of course we did. We even brought snacks. That’s friendship at its highest level.” Tyler let out a small laugh—the first real laugh they had heard from him since the injury. Sophie placed the paper bag on the table beside the bed. “Nothing fancy,” she said shyly. “Just something to keep you busy.” Tyler looked inside and smiled faintly. “Thanks.” Ryan set the juice beside it. “Doctor-approved,” he said. Grace folded her arms, pretending to be serious. “Don’t make us regret being nice.” Tyler shook his head slightly, amused. The tension in the room eased quickly. Then Noah spoke. “When do you leave the hospital?” “Tomorrow,” Tyler replied. “They said I can recover at home.” Jake nodded. “That’s good. Hospitals are boring. No video games, no good food, no freedom.” Tyler smirked. “You’re not wrong.” A brief silence followed. Then Tyler looked at Ethan. His expression changed—less playful, more thoughtful. “You played well yesterday,” he said. Ethan shrugged slightly. “So did you.” Tyler looked down at his leg. “Not well enough,” he muttered. Lily stepped forward gently. “You gave everything you had.” Tyler didn’t answer right away. Instead, he stared at the brace wrapped tightly around his knee, as if trying to understand how something so small could change so much. Then— The door opened suddenly. Everyone turned. Tyler’s father stepped inside. The room went quiet immediately. His presence filled the space like a heavy shadow. He wore a dark suit, his posture straight, his expression stern and unreadable. His eyes moved slowly across the group. Then settled on Ethan. A long, tense silence followed. Jake shifted awkwardly. Grace tightened her arms. Noah stood a little straighter. Tyler swallowed. “Dad,” he said cautiously. His father didn’t respond right away. Instead, he stepped further into the room. “I didn’t expect visitors,” he said in a calm but cold voice. The words carried quiet disapproval. Ethan felt his chest tighten, but he forced himself to remain calm. “We just came to check on him,” he said respectfully. Tyler’s father studied him carefully. For a moment, nobody moved. Nobody breathed. Then he spoke again. “You’re the one who refused to lose.” The statement wasn’t loud. But it carried weight. Ethan met his gaze. “Yes, sir,” he replied. The room felt suddenly smaller. Tyler’s father walked closer, stopping just a few steps away from Ethan. Jake looked ready to say something, but Grace subtly shook her head, warning him to stay quiet. Tyler watched nervously from the bed. His father’s voice lowered slightly. “You could have shown mercy.” Silence. Ethan took a steady breath before answering. “I showed respect,” he said. The words hung in the air. Simple. Honest. Unapologetic. Tyler’s father studied him again, his expression unreadable. Seconds passed. Then— To everyone’s surprise— He nodded once. A small nod. Barely noticeable. But real. “I see,” he said. The tension in the room loosened slightly. Tyler blinked in confusion. Jake raised his eyebrows. Grace looked shocked. Noah exhaled quietly. Tyler’s father turned toward his son. “You will recover,” he said firmly. “And when you do, you will return stronger.” Tyler nodded slowly. “Yes, sir.” His father then looked back at Ethan one last time. “Continue playing with integrity,” he said. The words sounded less like criticism… and more like acknowledgment. Then he turned and walked toward the door. Before leaving, he paused briefly. “Thank you for visiting,” he added. The door closed behind him. Silence filled the room. Jake was the first to react. “Okay,” he whispered, wide-eyed. “That was terrifying.” Grace let out a breath she didn’t realize she had been holding. Sophie nodded slowly. Ryan shook his head in disbelief. Noah allowed a faint smile. Tyler looked at Ethan. “He’s never said that to anyone before,” he admitted quietly. Ethan tilted his head slightly. “Said what?” Tyler hesitated. “Thank you.” Another silence followed. But this time… it felt different. Not tense. Not heavy. Hopeful. Because something small had just changed. And sometimes… small changes were the beginning of something much bigger.
