Chapter 17: Rumors

922 Words
By lunchtime, the story had spread across the entire school. Not perfectly accurate, of course. High school rumors never were. But somehow, every student now believed they knew exactly what had happened in the hallway that morning. Some said Lily had yelled at Tyler. Others said Ethan had challenged him to a fight. Jake claimed he heard someone say Tyler cried, which he insisted was “obviously true because it sounds funny.” The cafeteria buzzed with energy—voices overlapping, trays clattering, laughter bouncing off the walls. But at the group’s usual table, the mood was tense despite the noise around them. Jake dropped into his seat dramatically and sighed. “I would just like to announce,” he said loudly, “that I am now a public figure.” Grace looked up from her lunch. “Why?” Jake leaned back proudly. “Because three people asked me what happened this morning.” Sophie rolled her eyes. “They probably asked because you talk too much.” Jake gasped. “Excuse me. I provide valuable information.” Ryan shook his head. “You provide entertainment.” Noah sat beside Ethan, quietly observing the room. He noticed how often students glanced toward their table. Some whispered. Some pointed subtly. Others pretended not to stare but clearly were. It felt like they were suddenly in the spotlight. Ethan seemed calm on the outside, eating his food slowly, but Noah could tell he was thinking hard. Processing. Watching. Lily arrived a few seconds later and slid into the seat next to Ethan. “Is it just me,” she asked softly, “or is everyone staring at us?” Jake nodded seriously. “Yes. We’re famous now.” Grace groaned. “Please don’t encourage him.” Sophie leaned forward slightly. “Have you guys noticed Tyler hasn’t shown up yet?” That caught everyone’s attention immediately. Noah looked around the cafeteria again. She was right. Tyler, Marcus, and Dylan were nowhere in sight. Ryan frowned. “That’s weird.” Jake tapped his chin thoughtfully. “Maybe he transferred schools overnight.” Grace gave him a look. “That’s not how transfers work.” Jake shrugged. “It should be.” Lily’s expression tightened slightly. “I don’t like this,” she said quietly. Ethan glanced at her. “Why?” “Because,” she replied, lowering her voice, “he’s never this quiet.” Noah nodded slowly. She was right again. Tyler usually thrived on attention. Silence didn’t fit his personality. The conversation paused as the group considered that. Then suddenly— A loud crash echoed across the cafeteria. Everyone turned instantly. A tray had fallen to the floor near the entrance. Food scattered everywhere. Milk spilled across the tiles. And standing right in the middle of the mess… was Tyler. Marcus and Dylan stood behind him. The entire cafeteria fell silent. Even the teachers at the far end of the room stopped talking. Tyler didn’t look embarrassed. Didn’t look angry. Didn’t look emotional at all. He just stood there calmly, scanning the room. Looking. Searching. Until his eyes landed directly on Ethan. The silence grew heavier. Jake whispered, “Well… this is definitely not normal.” Tyler began walking forward. Slow. Steady. Each step echoed faintly against the floor. Students shifted in their seats, watching carefully. Some leaned away from the path he was taking, giving him space without being asked. No one wanted to get caught in the middle. Marcus and Dylan followed closely behind him. Within seconds, Tyler reached their table. He stopped. No shouting. No sudden movement. Just quiet tension. Ethan looked up at him calmly. “Yes?” he asked. Tyler stared at him for a long moment before speaking. “I’m not here to fight,” he said. That surprised everyone. Jake blinked. “That’s… new.” Grace nudged him sharply under the table. Tyler ignored the comment and kept his attention on Ethan. “I want to make something clear,” he continued. The cafeteria remained completely silent now. Even the teachers were watching. Ethan kept his voice steady. “Go ahead.” Tyler leaned slightly closer. “This isn’t over.” The words were quiet. Controlled. But they carried weight. Lily felt a chill run down her spine. Noah clenched his jaw. Jake stopped chewing his food. Ryan sat perfectly still. Sophie’s fingers tightened around her fork. Tyler straightened again. Then he did something unexpected. He reached into his pocket. Every muscle at the table tensed instantly. But instead of pulling out anything dangerous, he simply placed a folded piece of paper on the table in front of Ethan. Then he stepped back. No explanation. No threat. Just silence. Ethan looked down at the paper. Then back up at Tyler. “What is this?” he asked. Tyler’s expression remained unreadable. “You’ll see,” he said. A long pause followed. Then Tyler turned around and walked away. Marcus and Dylan followed without a word. The cafeteria remained silent for several seconds after they left. Finally, Jake whispered, “Okay… that was terrifying.” Grace nodded slowly. “Very.” All eyes shifted toward the folded paper now sitting on the table. No one moved. No one spoke. It felt like the object itself carried tension. Lily swallowed nervously. “Are you going to open it?” Ethan stared at the paper for a moment. Thinking. Weighing. Then, slowly, he reached forward. His fingers touched the edge. And carefully— he began to unfold it.
