Chapter 18: The Note

Ethan unfolded the paper slowly. The entire table leaned in. Even Jake, who normally joked about everything, stayed completely silent. The cafeteria noise had returned around them—students talking again, trays moving, chairs scraping—but at their table, the world felt paused. Ethan’s eyes moved across the page. His expression didn’t change at first. Then his eyebrows tightened slightly. Not fear. Not anger. Concern. “What does it say?” Lily asked quietly. Ethan didn’t answer immediately. He read the message again, carefully, as if making sure he hadn’t misunderstood it. Noah felt his heart beating faster. Jake leaned forward so far he nearly fell off his chair. “Bro,” Jake whispered urgently, “you’re killing us here. Read it already.” Ethan finally looked up. His voice was calm. But serious. “It says…” he began, then paused. Everyone held their breath. “Meet me behind the gym after school. Alone.” Silence. Heavy silence. Grace blinked. “That’s it?” Ethan nodded once. Sophie frowned. “No threats? No insults?” “No,” Ethan replied. Jake sat back slowly, rubbing his face. “That’s somehow worse.” Ryan nodded in agreement. “Yeah. Definitely worse.” Lily looked uneasy. “You’re not going, right?” Ethan didn’t answer immediately. And that silence made everyone nervous. Noah leaned forward. “You’re not going alone.” Ethan finally spoke. “He asked me to.” Jake pointed dramatically. “Yes, and that’s exactly why you shouldn’t.” Grace crossed her arms. “This sounds like a setup.” Sophie nodded firmly. “Absolutely.” Ryan added, “There’s no good reason for him to ask for a private meeting.” Lily’s voice softened, but her concern was clear. “Please don’t go,” she said. Ethan looked at all of them. His friends. Their worried faces. Their protective instincts. Then he exhaled slowly. “I need to know what he wants,” he said. Jake groaned loudly. “Curiosity is how people end up in horror movies.” Grace shot him a look. “Not helping.” Jake raised his hands defensively. “I’m just saying.” Noah studied Ethan carefully. “You think this is about more than basketball,” he said. Ethan nodded once. “Yes.” The group fell quiet again. Because deep down, they all felt the same thing. This wasn’t about a game anymore. The rest of the school day passed slowly. Painfully slowly. Classes felt longer. Teachers’ voices sounded distant. Even jokes didn’t land the same way. Every now and then, someone in the group would glance at the clock. Waiting. Counting down. Lily found herself unable to focus during English class. She kept staring at the page in front of her, reading the same sentence over and over without understanding it. Her thoughts kept drifting back to the note. Meet me behind the gym after school. Alone. She didn’t like the word alone. Not at all. Across the room, Ethan sat quietly, taking notes as usual. From the outside, he looked completely normal. But Lily could tell something was different. He was thinking. Planning. Preparing. And that scared her more than anything. The final bell rang. Students poured into the hallways, laughing and talking, excited to go home. Lockers slammed shut. Backpacks swung over shoulders. The usual after-school energy filled the building. But for Ethan and his friends, the moment felt heavy. Serious. Jake walked beside him, unusually quiet. Noah stayed close on the other side. Grace, Sophie, Ryan, and Lily followed just behind them. No one said much. They all knew where this was heading. When they reached the exit doors, Ethan stopped walking. He turned to face them. “I’ll go,” he said calmly. Jake shook his head immediately. “Nope.” Grace nodded. “Absolutely not.” Sophie crossed her arms. “We’re coming with you.” Ryan added, “You’re not doing this alone.” Lily stepped forward slightly. Her voice was soft. But firm. “You don’t have to handle this by yourself.” Ethan looked at them, one by one. He appreciated their loyalty. Their courage. Their friendship. But he also understood something important. “If all of us show up,” he said gently, “he won’t talk.” That made them pause. Because it was true. Noah sighed quietly. “You really think this is a conversation,” he said. Ethan nodded. “Yes.” Jake rubbed the back of his neck nervously. “I hate this plan,” he muttered. Grace agreed. “Same.” Lily looked at Ethan, worry clear in her eyes. “Promise us something,” she said. He met her gaze. “What?” Her voice trembled slightly. “If anything feels wrong… you leave immediately.” A brief silence followed. Then Ethan nodded. “I promise.” Jake pointed at him dramatically. “We will be nearby. Very nearby. Like… superhero backup nearby.” That earned a small smile from Ethan. “Okay,” he said. The sun was beginning to set as Ethan walked toward the back of the gym. The area was quiet. Empty. The sounds of students leaving school echoed faintly in the distance. Shadows stretched across the pavement. And standing near the fence… was Tyler. Alone. No Marcus. No Dylan. Just him. His hands were in his pockets. His posture relaxed. But his expression serious. Ethan approached slowly. Steady. Calm. Stopping a few feet away. Neither of them spoke at first. The silence felt thick. Heavy. Finally, Tyler broke it. “You came.” Ethan nodded once. “You asked.” Another pause. Tyler looked down briefly, then back up. For the first time since this whole situation started… he didn’t look angry. He looked tired. Frustrated. Conflicted. “I didn’t call you here to fight,” he said. Ethan stayed quiet. Waiting. Listening. Tyler exhaled slowly. Then he said something completely unexpected. “This school…” he began, “…used to be simple.” Ethan frowned slightly. “What do you mean?” Tyler hesitated. Like he was choosing his words carefully. “Before you showed up,” he said, “things were predictable.” A light breeze moved through the area. Rustling the trees nearby. Ethan studied him closely. “You don’t like change,” he said. Tyler gave a short, humorless laugh. “No,” he admitted. “I don’t.” Another silence followed. Longer this time. Then Tyler looked directly at Ethan. His voice quieter now. “But this isn’t just about you.” Ethan felt a small knot form in his stomach. “What is it about, then?” Tyler’s jaw tightened. He hesitated again. Struggling with something. Finally, he spoke. “It’s about my dad.” The words landed heavily in the quiet air. Ethan blinked. Confused. “What does your dad have to do with this?” Tyler looked away toward the empty field behind the gym. His expression hardened. “Everything,” he said. The tension in the air shifted. This wasn’t a threat anymore. This was something deeper. Something personal. Something complicated. Ethan realized, in that moment, that the story he thought he understood… was only the surface. And whatever Tyler was about to reveal next— was going to change everything.
