Kane sat with Macy and Veda; they had found quite a bit on Harold Baker.
“Okay, so Baker’s been in this town forever, literally. He was a bit of a weird kid growing up, nothing major though; he took over the asylum when he turned twenty-one, and it says he became a father at the age of twenty-two, they don’t give the names of the mother or child though, apparently he was never in the child’s life because the mother felt he was no good; they say it was a daughter. He ran the asylum, secretly doing experiments until they found out and closed him down; he had been doing experiments on the patients since he was thirty years old; over thirty-five people died under his care, they suspect it was due to the experiments but there was no proof of that. It says that when he was taken away, he wouldn’t stop talking about the spirits and how he needed to be allowed back into the asylum to stop them.” Macy looked up and sighed.
Veda took over, “Oh, don’t forget, we found an old picture of the woman they suspect to have been the mother of his child, not that it’s very clear; we also found an address of the house he used to live in.”
Kane stood, “What are we waiting for then? Let’s go.”
Macy frowned, “Shouldn’t we maybe let Moth and the guys know to meet us there?”
Kane raised a brow, “Macy, come on, we’re going to look at an old house, what’s the worst that could happen?”
Macy gave her a pointed look, “You of all people should know the answer to that.”
Kane sighed, “Fine, give me the address so long and you and the others can meet me there.”
Macy stood, “Let’s go, I’ll text Collin on the way.”
Veda stood and followed behind them, “I can just see you two are going to end up getting me killed.”
They stood in the middle of an old house, opposite the small graveyard.
The house was an old double story, with a winding staircase; everything was still in place, although covered in a thick layer of dust.
Veda crossed her arms over her chest, “I really should not have worn heels; I can just feel we’re going to be running from spirits again.”
Kane ignored her and walked over to look at the photos above the fireplace.
She wiped the dust off them and was surprised to see that most of them were pictures of Harold and Jethro, “Guys, Harold and Jethro were friends; it doesn’t make sense why he put him in the asylum.”
Macy and Veda came over to her, just as they heard a noise above them.
They all glanced up and Veda took her shoes off.
Kane put the photo down and picked up a fire poker before heading towards the stairs.
Veda huffed, “What the hell are you doing?”
Kane waved a hand at her to keep her quiet and started up the stairs.
She heard Veda huff again and follow, “Macy, call Collin and find out how far they are; tell Moth this one’s trying to get us killed.”
Kane paused on the second landing; waiting to hear if she would hear the noise again.
Veda came closer to whisper, “Kane, can we just go wait until the others get here?”
Kane shook her head and opened one of the doors.
“Kaaane.”
She turned to Veda, “Did you hear that too?”
She nodded.
Kane walked out, “Veda, go wait outside.”
“I’m not just going to leave you here.”
Kane glared at her.
Veda’s eyes went the size of saucers as she focused on something behind Kane, “Oh God.”
Kane spun in time to see Goran standing in one of the doorways, “Kane, still so predictable.”
Kane didn’t take her eyes from him, “Veda, go wait outside.”
Veda sprinted down the stairs screaming, “Macy, get Moth.”
Goran smiled, “Look at what Moth did to me; my whole body was burnt in that fire.”
Kane frowned, “You should have just stayed away, Goran.”
He chuckled and took a step towards her, “Kane, you know me; I don’t give up so easily.”
“I’m never going to take you back Goran.”
He smiled again, “We’ll see about that; I will get it right to kill Moth; a freak accident that you got him out of that car before the bomb went off.”
Kane narrowed her eyes at him as she realized what he had just said; and then she ran at him, swinging with the poker, she made contact with his shoulder, but as she pulled it back he grabbed it and pushed her back against the banister, trying to push her over.
“Kane, if I can’t have you, no one else will; I will kill you.”
Kane smiled, “Good luck with that.” She brought her leg up, kicking him in the stomach and hitting him over the back with the fire poker and kicking him in the side; she lifted the poker and brought it down through his foot, it got stuck in the wood of the floors and he backhanded her across the face, sending her staggering back.
“London?!”
He looked up, pulling his foot free, he ran into one of the rooms, jumping from the window.
Moth ran up the stairs, “London, are you okay? Where is he?”
Kane wiped the blood from her split lip, “He jumped out the window.”
Moth turned and when his eyes landed on the window he ran towards it, throwing himself out too.
Kane rolled her eyes and ran down the stairs, running past her friends and going around to the back where Goran and Moth had jumped from the window; they were nowhere in sight.
She went back to where Cliff, Collin, Macy and Veda stood all looking rather confused.
“Goran, he was here, he jumped out the window and Moth chased after him.”
Moth came running back, “I can’t find him,” he turned to Kane, “What the hell were you thinking coming out here without me?”
Kane groaned, “Moth, I don’t need a bodyguard.”
“You could have been killed, London! Don’t you tell me you don’t need a bodyguard,” he turned to Macy and Veda, “And you two, encouraging this!”
Macy held up her hands, “No, we wanted to wait for you guys.”
Moth turned back to Kane, “Are you okay?”
She nodded, “Yes, I’m fine.”
“Don’t ever do something like this alone again.”
She rolled her eyes, “Anyway, this is Harold’s old house.”
Moth eyed the house, “Find anything interesting?”
“Not yet, but I’m sure we will; Macy and Veda found out a bit about him, he actually had a daughter but he wasn’t in her life because the mother, who remains unknown, felt he wasn’t good enough.”
Moth sighed, “Okay, so how do we get him lucid enough to tell us the truth?”
Kane shrugged, “I have no idea; I was thinking maybe if we keep visiting, he’ll open up to us.”
Moth nodded, “It’s worth a try; let’s have a look around here and see if we can find anything of use.”
They went in and each took a room to search.
“London, come here; I found something.”
Kane went over to where Moth stood with an old picture of a woman.
“She looks so similar to you.”
Kane studied the picture; Moth was right, she did look very similar.
“I wonder if this was the woman who had his child.”
Moth shrugged, “I think it could be, but there are no names on here to point us in the right direction.”
Kane sighed, “Let me hold onto this, maybe if we show it to him he can tell us who it is.”
Moth nodded and handed her the picture, “London, I’m sorry for going off at you earlier; I just don’t want you putting yourself in dangerous situations.”
Kane nodded, “I understand, Moth.”
Moth sat down on the desk, “I’ve spoken to people who knew my parents; they all say the same thing. Jethro loved my mother, but it became an obsession; he eventually believed he could only keep her safe if he killed her because he found out she was planning on leaving him.”
Kane frowned, “Moth, I don’t know how many times I need to tell you that you’re nothing like your father.”
Moth looked up at her, “London…I tried to kill Alice; I threatened to kill Harold, and I’m planning on killing Goran; it’s all the same, Jethro did the exact same thing if anyone hurt my mother; what if I snap and I lose it and I hurt you?”
Kane sighed, “Moth, I have faith in you.”
Moth shook his head, “Maybe you shouldn’t.”
Kane frowned, “Moth, what is going on with you? You know you aren’t your father; why are you so worried about this?”
Moth ran a hand through his hair, “I don’t know; I’m seeing so many similarities between Jethro and me, and it scares me.”
Kane lifted his face so he was looking at her, “Moth, everyone has a choice; and you know what he was like, and you can choose not to be the same.”
He took her hand and smiled, “What would I do without you, London?”
“Well, you’re not going to find that out, because I’m always going to be right next to you.”
Veda walked in, “Oh, s**t, sorry, am I interrupting?”
Kane laughed, “What is it?”
“We sort of found something.”
Moth stood, “What did you find?”
“Files; Harold was trying to open some sort of portal between us and the spirits; he was experimenting on the patients, yes, but to make them be able to share a body with the spirits.”
Kane frowned, “But where does the curse fit into that?”
Veda shrugged, “We haven’t found that yet; maybe the curse is from all the people who died because of it.”
Kane nodded, “That is a possibility.”
“But then how do we stop it?”
Veda shrugged again.
Kane sighed; she had been hoping this wouldn’t have been this hard.
