Chapter 3

Kane woke up and went to a bath before changing into jeans and a simple black tank top. She had five missed calls from Macy, five missed calls from Macy with Veda shouting in the background, and twenty texts from Cliff, Macy and Veda. Kane dialled Macy’s number and listened to the ring. “Kane?” “Hey, Mace how was the rest of the party?” “Hang on, putting you on speaker. Guys, it's Kane.” “Where the hell did you go to? Tell me you didn’t leave with Moth.” Kane frowned at Veda’s voice; it reminded her of something she had seen while slightly drunk. “Veda, you and Cliff were making out when I left, so don’t even start.” She was met with silence. “Kane, are you coming over?” “Yes, Macy, oh s**t, wait, I have to go open the track first.” “We’ll meet you there.” Kane hung up and went to the kitchen where she found Alice and Kelso, both with coffee cups in hand. Alice looked up, “How’s the hangover? Kelso tells me you drank quite a bit.” Kane shot Kelso a glare, “Not too bad, thankfully.” Kelso frowned, “How are things between you and Moth? Alice tells me he brought you home.” Kane huffed, “Dear God, do you two sit and discuss me the whole time?” She picked up a muffin and headed for the door, “Nothing’s changed between Moth and me, see you later.” Kane stood in the booth above the seats in the race track, her friends around her. “So, Cliff and Veda, what’s going on between the two of you?” she asked, while not taking her eyes from the track as the racers lined up. Rick walked in, “Hey, the race will be starting in a few minutes; apparently Jixen wants to make an announcement.” Kane turned to him, “You know that Jixen is Moth, right?” Rick frowned, “What? No, I had no idea; I haven’t met him… It’s Moth?” Kane nodded before turning back as she watched Moth walk onto the small stage area which held a mike and the huge screen displayed him for everyone to see. “Hello, everyone,” he waited for the crowd to stop shouting before continuing, “I have a rather big announcement to make; this will be my last race. I will be returning to Misty Meadows. As much as I love racing, there is something here that means so much more to me.” He looked up to where Kane was standing and she felt her heart skip a beat as she watched him walk off stage. Cliff grinned, “Told you he couldn’t stay away.” Despite not being sure of what she wanted anymore, she found herself smiling. Rick scoffed, “You can’t seriously consider taking him back.” Kane looked up, suddenly seeing the racer's cars mangled and on fire; Moth’s dead body lay in the middle of the track, fire everywhere. “No, no, no. They’re all going to die, stop the race.” “We can’t get down there now, it’s not safe, they’re about to start.” Kane ignored Rick and ran out at full speed; jumping over rows of chairs at a speed she didn’t know was possible. There were so many people around, she couldn’t get to Moth, so she stopped at Deacon’s car, “Deacon, get out.” “Are you crazy?” Kane ripped open the door and pulled him out, just as the race began; she jumped into the car and took off after Moth. As she drove she tried to figure out what would cause the fire. She came up next to Moth and he glanced at her, before spinning back to face her; she opened the window and tried to shout across to him to stop but he frowned, obviously not hearing her. She sped up, and moved into the passenger seat, as it slowed down, she jumped out of the door, and onto Moth’s car; hanging onto the window before pulling herself through. “London, what the bloody hell are you doing?” Suddenly Kane saw a bomb under the car. “I saw the track on fire, and you die, there’s a bomb under your car.” “What?! And instead of getting away, you jump in?” “Moth, we need to get out of this car!” He spun hitting the car against the barrier before they jumped out and started running, the other racers were speeding past them and Kane worried briefly that they would get knocked over. Suddenly she heard the sound of the bomb going off, and Moth jumped over her, pushing her to the ground. She hit her head on the tar, and the last thing she remembered before everything went black was the weight of Moth shielding her.
