The Hidden Room

346 Words
Maya spent the whole afternoon digging through her mom’s old things. She didn’t feel great about it, but she couldn’t help herself she needed the truth. If her mother really had been at Platform Four, there had to be something that proved it. She rifled through piles of photographs, stacks of documents, dog-eared notebooks, random boxes. All of it useless. Then, in the spare bedroom, she noticed something off about the wall behind the wardrobe. When she knocked on it, it sounded hollow. That was enough. She shoved the wardrobe out of the way, heart thumping, and there it was: a small wooden door, almost hidden. Maya searched the room, hands shaking, until she found a tiny key taped under an old drawer. It clicked perfectly in the lock. The door creaked open dust and secrets revealing a narrow room crammed with boxes. An old desk sat right in the middle. She flicked on the light. All over the desk, she saw her mother’s handwriting. Pages and pages, covered with dates one date, tomorrow’s, scrawled again and again. She picked up a sheet. “The letters have started again,” it read. She grabbed another. “Daniel believes we can stop them.” Maya’s breath came shallow and fast as she read. Her eyes darted to another page: “If anything happens to me, Maya must never know about Project Tomorrow.” Project Tomorrow. The words felt heavy and strange tumbling out of her mouth as she repeated them. Then she spotted a folder. Someone had taped a photo of her, as a little girl, right on its cover. Underneath, a line printed in bold: SUBJECT M PRIMARY RECIPIENT Maya felt her hands go numb. “Subject?” she whispered. She flipped the folder open. Inside: medical reports, snapshots, page after page describing her childhood. Someone had been watching her. For years. Near the back, one last page. “Maya is not receiving the letters by accident.” Her heart hammered. Suddenly, footsteps echoed outside the hidden room. Maya froze. Someone else was in the house.
