Someone Is Watching

Maya snapped off the light. The footsteps outside stopped cold. She barely breathed, listening. Someone walked across the hallway, slow and careful. The bedroom door creaked open.
Maya ducked behind the desk, heart hammering. A heavy shadow crossed under the c***k of the hidden-room door. Someone stood right outside. She grabbed for her phone, desperate to call Marcus but the footsteps faded and the silence stretched.
She waited, trying not to move. Still nothing. Finally, she opened the door just a c***k. The bedroom was empty. She shot downstairs. The front door sat wide open. Whoever came in was already gone.
Maya called Marcus without thinking. “Someone was in my house.”
“What?” He didn’t sound awake now.
“I found a hidden room. My mom kept records about something called Project Tomorrow.”
There was a loaded pause. “You know what that is, don’t you?” she pressed.
“I’ve heard the name.”
“Where?”
“My dad mentioned it once.”
Her patience snapped. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
He hesitated. “Because I wasn’t sure I could trust you.”
She shook her head she couldn’t believe it. “Trust me?”
“That’s not what I meant.”
“Then what did you mean?”
Marcus’s voice dropped. “My father worked with Daniel.”
Maya’s heart stopped. “Your father knew mine?”
“Yeah.”
“Were they both in Project Tomorrow?”
“I don’t know.” He sounded troubled.
Maya stared at the door to the hidden room. “We’re going to Platform Four tomorrow.”
“No,” Marcus said right away.
“Why not?”
“Because whoever wrote those letters they know what you’re doing.”
Maya’s voice dropped to a whisper. “That’s exactly why I’m going.”
The line went silent. Then Marcus spoke, and it chilled her more than anything so far. “Maya, the letters aren’t just telling you your future anymore.”
She felt cold all over. “What are they doing?”
“They’re changing it.”
The call ended before she could answer. For a long moment, Maya stood frozen. She finally had to wonder had every decision she made since the first letter really been hers? Or was someone else pulling the strings all along?
