26I followed along the 401, the main artery across the top end of the city. Heading east put me in the opposite direction of most of the traffic flow. Although the volume stayed fairly heavy, it kept moving. I was grateful for that. I didn't want to start off bumper to bumper in a jam. It would be 35 minutes at least before I turned off and headed due north. The secondary roads remained lightly travelled as I headed north toward Haliburton. I followed a windy circuitous route that meandered through the hills with roads blasted through walls of granite and pre-Cambrian rock. The fabled Canadian shield in all its glory, glittering like rusted metal in the hazy sun, filtered through the weak cloud cover.
