Sometime after nine, a different doctor finally stepped through the swinging door and looked around. “Miss Hartford?” Melissa leaped from her chair and hurried to him, heart in her throat. “We’ve got Mr. Kane stabilized. We’ve done as much as we can at present to correct the damage. But he’s lost a great deal of blood. Too much really, but apparently we got to him in time to prevent permanent damage. I won’t burden you with the medical details, but his shoulder was nearly destroyed. He’ll have to have at least two additional surgeries to repair that, but for now, his vital signs are good and I’d say his chances are fifty-fifty or better for survival and probably full recovery. It’s just going to take time, and complete recovery is going to require a great deal of patience and effort.” “
