ALESSIA’S POV
The days following the meeting with Rinaldi were heavy with tension. His warning—the dagger you carry can be turned against you, especially by those closest to you—had lingered in Alessia’s mind, sharp and unsettling. She had always trusted her instincts, and her instincts now screamed that the enemy was not only outside their gates, but already walking among them.
It was late evening at the Moretti Estate. The grand study was lit only by the warm glow of lamps, casting long shadows across the walls lined with family portraits. Alessia stood before the large oak desk, reviewing the latest financial records and personnel files, her brow furrowed. Beside her, Kai leaned against the shelf, his gaze sharp and focused, having arrived earlier that day to go through the evidence together.
“Look here,” Alessia said, pointing to a series of transactions dated back over eighteen months. “Small, consistent withdrawals, routed through shell companies in cities Rinaldi controls. They start shortly before my father’s accident, and they continue even now.”
Kai straightened, his expression hardening as he scanned the details. “And who authorized these?”
“Marco Rizzo,” she whispered, the name feeling like ash on her tongue.
For a heartbeat, the world seemed to tilt. Marco had been her father’s most trusted advisor, the man who had helped her step into power, who had stood at her side through every threat and decision. He had held her confidence, her respect, and her trust.
“Are you certain?” Kai asked gently, though his eyes remained fixed on the documents.
Alessia nodded slowly, her hands trembling just slightly. “The signatures match. The codes used are only accessible to him and to me. He had the access, he had the trust… and he had the opportunity to pass information to Rinaldi without anyone suspecting.”
She turned away, walking toward the window, trying to steady the storm of emotions rising within her—shock, hurt, anger, and a deep, stinging sense of betrayal. In a world where loyalty was the rarest currency, she had given hers freely, and it had been repaid with lies.
Kai moved to stand beside her, not touching her at first, giving her space to process the truth. “I know what this means to you. He was like family. But remember—his choices are not a reflection of your judgment. They are a reflection of his own greed and fear. Rinaldi knows exactly which strings to pull, what favors to offer, what threats to make.”
Alessia took a steadying breath, turning back to face him. Her eyes were bright, but her resolve was unbroken. “If he is working for Rinaldi, then he knows every move we make. Every plan, every meeting, every piece of intelligence we share. That explains how Rinaldi always seems to be one step ahead.”
“Then we must act carefully,” Kai said. “If we confront him too soon, Rinaldi will vanish, and we will lose our chance to uncover the full network. But we cannot let him continue to feed information.”
Just then, the door opened, and Marco stepped inside, carrying a fresh stack of reports. He paused when he saw them, his expression calm, professional, showing no sign of guilt or unease.
“I have the updates from the border patrols,” he said, placing the papers on the desk. “All quiet for now, though the men report strange movements in the hills west of Vellora.”
Alessia held his gaze, searching for any flicker of deceit, any tell‑tale sign. Outwardly, he appeared the same man she had always known—steady, reliable, dedicated. But now, she saw the layers beneath: the secrets, the deals, the choice he had made to serve two masters.
“Thank you, Marco,” she said, keeping her voice even and composed. “We will review them. But for now, I would like you to take the rest of the evening off. You have earned some rest.”
Marco nodded, a faint polite smile touching his lips. “Of course. If you need anything, I am only a call away.”
As he turned to leave, Alessia’s hand tightened around the edge of the desk. The moment the door clicked shut, she let out a breath she felt she had been holding for years.
“He is good,” she said quietly. “Too good. If we hadn’t had the full records, we never would have suspected.”
Kai walked to her, taking her hands in his, his grip firm and reassuring. “But we do have the truth now. And that is our advantage. We will let him believe he is still safe, still undetected. We will feed him controlled information—information that leads Rinaldi into traps of our own making. And when the time is right, we will take him down.”
Alessia looked into his eyes, finding in them the strength and certainty she needed. “And after him? How many others will we find? How many more have been playing both sides all this time?”
“Only one way to find out,” Kai said softly. “We will strip away the lies, one layer at a time. And you will not do it alone. I am with you, Alessia. Every step, every choice, every hard truth.”
KAI’S POV
That same night, after leaving the Moretti Estate, Kai returned to the Valtieri Fortress, his mind working through every angle, every risk, every possible outcome. The discovery of a traitor within Alessia’s inner circle changed everything—it meant that Rinaldi had access to their most sensitive plans, and that they would have to operate with far greater caution than before.
Dante was waiting in the study, his expression grave as Kai laid out what they had found.
“Marco Rizzo,” Dante repeated, shaking his head. “I would have staked my life on his loyalty. He stood by Luciano for decades.”
“Rinaldi is a master manipulator,” Kai said, pacing slowly. “He does not always buy loyalty with money. Sometimes he uses fear—threats against family, promises of safety, the illusion that there is no other choice. Whatever his reasons, the result is the same: Rinaldi knows our strategies, our strengths, our weaknesses.”
“Then we have to assume there are others,” Dante added. “If he has infiltrated the Moretti ranks, it is only logical to think he has tried to do the same here.”
Kai stopped, his jaw tightening. “Which is why, from this moment forward, we operate on a strict need‑to‑know basis. Only the two of us, Alessia, and a handful of trusted individuals will have access to full plans. We will send false intelligence through channels we suspect are compromised, letting Rinaldi believe he is winning, while we prepare the trap that will end him.”
He paused, thinking of Alessia—of the pain she had tried so hard to hide behind her mask of strength. To discover that the man she had trusted above all others had betrayed her must have felt like another blow, coming so soon after the loss of her father.
“She is strong,” Dante observed, as if reading his thoughts. “But even the strongest leaders carry wounds.”
Kai nodded, his expression softening just a fraction. “She is stronger than she knows. And she has something Rinaldi will never understand: she does not rule by fear alone. She rules with heart, with integrity, and with the knowledge that she is not alone. That is why Rinaldi will fail. He thinks our bond is a weakness. He thinks it can be broken. But he is wrong.”
ALESSIA’S POV
– TWO DAYS LATER
The air was cool and crisp as Alessia and Kai met at the secluded coastal villa in Porto Nero—the same place where they had shared their first true moment of honesty and love. It was a place free of hidden ears, free of prying eyes, a sanctuary where they could speak without fear of being overheard.
They sat at the large wooden table, maps and reports spread between them, but for a moment, Alessia’s gaze drifted to the window, where the sea stretched out dark and endless beneath the moonlight.
“I have spent the last two days watching him,” she said softly. “Every glance, every word, every decision. He still acts as my protector, as my advisor. It is almost convincing… almost.”
Kai reached across the table, covering her hand with his. “It is not your fault. He made his choice. You trusted because you have a good heart, Alessia. That is not a flaw—that is what makes you different from the rest of this world.”
Alessia turned her hand, lacing her fingers through his, finding comfort in his touch. “What do we do now?”
“We give him what he expects,” Kai said, leaning forward to trace a line on the map. “We let him pass along information about a large convoy moving through the eastern pass—information that suggests we are focusing our defenses there. Rinaldi will send his forces to intercept, believing he is catching us off guard. But in reality, we will have our full strength waiting for him there, while we secure the locations he actually intends to strike.”
Alessia studied the plan, a slow, determined fire igniting in her eyes. “And when he realizes he has walked into a trap? He will know we have uncovered the truth.”
“Exactly,” Kai said. “And when the battle is over, we will bring Marco in to face the consequences of his choices. He will tell us everything—every name, every location, every secret Rinaldi has hidden. And once we have it all, we end it. Once and for all.”
Alessia stood, walking to the window, Kai following close behind. He placed his hands gently on her shoulders, turning her to face him, his gaze searching hers with warmth and certainty.
“You are not alone in this,” he repeated, his voice low and sincere. “I know it feels as if the world is full of shadows and lies right now. But look closer, and you will see what remains true: our alliance is unbreakable. Our trust in each other is absolute. And as long as we stand together, no betrayal, no enemy, no darkness can ever truly defeat us.”
Alessia rested her hands on his chest, feeling the steady beat of his heart beneath her palms. In this man, she had found something rare and precious—an equal, a partner, a love that did not demand she be anything less than exactly who she was.
“Crown and crown,” she whispered, repeating the vow they had made to each other. “Dagger and dagger.”
Kai smiled, leaning down to press a soft, reassuring kiss to her forehead, then to her lips—a promise sealed not in ink, but in feeling, in purpose, and in the unshakable resolve of two hearts united against all odds.
“Together,” he murmured against her lips. “Always.”
Somewhere in the darkness, enemies plotted and secrets waited to be revealed. But here, in this quiet moment, Alessia knew that no matter what lay ahead, they were ready. They were strong. And they were ready to face whatever came next—side by side.
