Respect

1251 Words
John admired Diane for her personality. She is different. Different from the women he had been around, business or blind dates. She is totally frank. She admits he is handsome but she doesn’t show any signs of being attracted to him. He can make himself comfortable and express his thoughts without her being offended because she takes his words as if he means it and it’s his freedom to express but it’s up to her to take them casually or seriously and she chooses the former. There is no need to take them seriously, they are strangers anyway.  “What did you feel after breaking up with him? Did you regret it and wanted to get back with him?” He simply asked. “I can’t say I regretted breaking up with him, I actually felt he deserved to find someone who can satisfy him and be happy, but a part of me is so sad like I lost a person who knows me inside and out. He knows all my fears and hopes. Another reason why I felt so betrayed. But I am aware that most of the faulty parts were on me, I declined his marriage proposal last summer and suggested getting married next summer. I got so busy with work and post grad studies that the last time we met before today was a month ago already. I missed all the calendar dates and he was the one to surprise me with every special event. See? What more of a pathetic, incompetent girlfriend can I get?” Diane kept her drinks coming while pouring her heart out. John occasionally took a sip of his drinks while pretending to casually listen to her words but he quietly admired her more, she can analyze her case in a way like not every other girl would. He wonders what made this beautiful doctor be so positive and principled in life. He is beginning to get curious about wanting to know her better. His curiosity is getting the better of him that he doesn’t wish tonight to end here and let her forget him tomorrow.  “If you felt that way, maybe it was right to let him go. He must have found it difficult to tell you, finding ways on how to tell you in a more simple way but it only took long yet the effects are just the same, you were good just ripping off the bandage than taking it slow causing more pain.” He made himself sound uncaring but he was in a way comforting her. Diane chuckled. "Yeah, as a doctor I really know how to rip a bandage.” She sighed. She felt much better than a while ago before she talked to John. She looked at her watch and noticed it was too late. She should head home, she thought.  “Thank you, John, for today. You made me feel better than before I talked to you. I should get home now.” “I don’t give favors for free.” He bluntly answered. “I would like to have an IOU ticket, I will claim when I see fit, what do you say?” Diane wasn’t surprised but also thankful she could give back the favor, he really made her feel better anyways. “Oh, well, there’s no such thing as free lunch after all, as long as what you will ask isn’t out of morality and against the law then no problem, but just talking won’t do, you must bring me safely to my doorstep, what do you say mister?” She nonchalantly declared her demands with a teasing smile. A smile she wasn’t aware was so enchanting that John was mesmerized for a very brief moment before he smiled back and answered. “Deal.” John agreed. Not only will he feel sure she was safe, he will also know where she lives, not a bad deal, he thought. So he called Henry to pick them up and send Diane to her place first before heading to his. Henry was beyond surprised when he saw his boss coming out of the bar with a lady he had never seen before but he kept his cool revealing nothing of his amusement from the turn of events. It wasn’t the first time his boss spent a leisure time at a bar but he never asked him for a ride home because he doesn’t drink beyond capacity and prefers to get home by cab rather than bothering his subordinates with a late night ride.  When they arrived at Diane’s place, John sent her to her door with what seemed to Henry as John was taking extra care for the lady. Henry was sure he had never seen his boss do these things to anyone aside from the Chairman which is of course natural as she is his grandma, but anyone outside the family has never had these privileges, even for the chosen blind dates by the chairman herself. Yet Henry can see that their actions and movements, even their exchange of conversations aren’t sensual. It was more of respect, pure and like they share the same harmony of personality. The lady was obviously drunk but her actions weren’t indecent at all. And his boss had obviously had shots but his demeanor was like just when he is sober. But he radiates a new expression, something Henry hasn’t seen before. And Henry can’t even point out what exactly is different with John, his cold-aloof but kind and considerate boss. “I would invite you for a cup of coffee if I wasn’t drunk, it ain’t already too late to be having coffee and if I have a stock of coffee in my cupboard but I know you are already tired of my ranting so I will send you right away, now that I am safe in my doorstep. So, off you go, mister handsome stranger”, Diane grinned as she stepped in and held the door to close. “Don’t tell me, you already forgot my name, beautiful lady doctor,’’ John teased her back pretending to forget her name. “It’s John, I'll never forget. I don’t meet a lot of Greek god look alike to easily forget them.’’ She quickly replied. “That’s what I thought,’’ John smiled. “I’ll be in touch. Or maybe I’ll just show up here if you don’t give me your calling card, Doctor Diane.’’ She realized she just blabbered about her emotions, thanked him, and agreed to return the favor without even knowing how to contact her or how he could get in touch with her. She hurriedly scanned her wallet for a calling card and handed him, she didn’t have to ask him of his, anyway she already took her favor, it’s now just to return the favor back, he would contact her not she contacting him in the future. “My apologies, I might sound insincere by agreeing to return the favor without giving you a way to contact me, I am really sorry about that.’’ she quickly handed him the card once she got it from her wallet. “I have my ways even if you didn’t tell me, I also know you’re sincere by letting me know where you live and which door exactly is your place. It’s not easy to owe me a favor, dearest Doctor.’’ He stated a matter of fact. And even if she didn’t tell him anything, John has easier ways to know if he wanted to know anything about her. But he liked it better that he didn’t have to pry into her privacy.
