For the next few days, the tension between Alexei and me simmered over, an unspoken understanding layered beneath our every interaction. We moved in our usual rhythms, he was my father's inner circle and I observed from the edges. But now, I was acutely aware of the secrets that had pulled me deeper into the shadows of my father’s empire.
One morning I found myself lingering outside my father’s study. The door was slightly ajar, voices murmuring within.
“Everything is in place now,” Alexei was saying, his voice low and unyielding. “No one suspects a thing. “
“Good. You have proven yourself valuable again. If this goes well, we will control more than just this city. We’ll hold the entire region in our hands.” My father said, his tone filled with approval.
As I eavesdrop my mind spun with questions. I was still curious about what had happened that night at the dock. Was Alexei really as loyal to my father as he seemed or was he playing his own game? Was it my father who had sent him or not?
My father’s voice broke through my thoughts. “Zee, I know you are there.”
I froze, I had been caught eavesdropping. Taking a deep long breath I stepped into the room, my father watched me with that shrewd gaze of his, the one that always seemed to know more than he let on.
“Father,” I said, attempting a calm I didn't quite feel. “I wanted to speak with you.”
“About what exactly?” his tone held a note of warning, a reminder that he didn't appreciate intrusions into his dealings.
Alexei’s gaze was now on me too, intense and unwavering.
“Zee what is it you want to talk to me about?” my father said, jolting me out of my thoughts.
I cleared my throat, summoning my courage. “I wanted to be more involved,” I said finally. “You keep me out of your meetings, your plans, and I have been sheltered from all of it my entire life. But if I'm meant to inherit your empire one day, don't I need to know what I'm getting into?”
My father's eyes narrowed as he watched me speak. “Are you sure about this Zee, you’re playing a dangerous game. The world isn't as simple as it appears from the outside. Yeah, I have always wanted you to take over this empire but I must tell you Zee it's brutal. You will have to be prepared to make sacrifices.”
“I know all these Dad and I'm ready to learn,” I said, keeping my gaze steady. “Or are you afraid I might be too weak to handle anything?”
A flicker of something, pride perhaps crossed my father's face. “Okay then, you will be joining us on the next operation.”
I had pushed him and it had worked. But as my gaze shifted to Alexei, his stare was sharp and unreadable, and I couldn't shake the feeling that he was onto me. Even if he had spoken about that night he knew exactly what I’d seen.
“Later tonight, “ my father said, leaning back in his chair. “ we will see if you are ready Zee or not.”
That evening I found myself in the back of one of my father’s black SUVs, flanked by two of his men. The atmosphere was tense, thick with the anticipation of what was to come.
Alexei was sitting across from me, his expression was blank as he gave the driver instructions. I could feel his gaze on me, but I refused to look his way, keeping my focus on the lights of the city flashing by.
We arrived at an abandoned warehouse near the docks, it was massive, rusted doors looming before us. Alexei came down first then offered me a hand to help me out, his grip firm and unyielding. I hesitated, feeling the weight of his hand and the silent warning in his eyes.
“This isn't a game, Zee, “ he whispered as we walked towards the building. “Whatever curiosity led you here…..could also get you killed.”
“And if I don’t want to be led?” I replied, meeting his gaze. “What if I want to know the truth for myself?”
A flicker of something crossed his face, but he quickly buried it. “Then you’d better be prepared for what you’ll find.”
Inside, the building was dimly lit, the shadows thick and cloying. My father’s men were scattered around securing the area. Near the centre of the room were several crates marked with a symbol I recognized instantly as a mark of our family’s empire, a signal that whatever lay inside was valuable and dangerous.
Father strode forward, a satisfied gleam in his eyes as he surveyed the crates. “This is the future Zee. Control the supply and you control the demand. This isn't just about the money it's about power.”
One of the crates was opened, revealing rows of sleek black firearms and cases filled with what looked like meticulously packed vials. My stomach churned. I had always known my father’s empire was saturated in crime but seeing the reality of it, the drugs, the weapons hit me like a blow.
“These are what you would be inheriting when you take over my legacy. Are you ready to inherit all of this?” my father’s voice pulled me from my thoughts.
I forced a smile taking a look at him at the price and ruthlessness in his eyes. “Yeah,” I replied, my voice steady even as my heart raced. “I'm ready.”
As I spoke, Alexei’s gaze locked onto mine, his eyes filled with a silent challenge as if daring me to prove my words, to withstand the dark path I had chosen.
He stepped forward his tone cold and measured as he addressed my father. “We have a problem,” he said, handing my father a phone.
My father’s face hardened as he read the text from the phone. “Someone’s tipped off the authorities. They will be here in ten minutes.”
A murmur rippled through the men around us, a sense of panic threatening to overtake them. My father quickly snapped his fingers, issuing orders sending the men scrambling to secure the cargo and prepare for a hasty escape.
Alexei grabbed me by my arm, his voice low and urgent. “You wanted to see this world for what it is Zee? Well, here it is. Now move.”
He pulled through the massive warehouse, maneuvering us through the chaos as my father's men worked frantically to salvage what they could.
Soon the sound of sirens beg
an to echo in the distance, growing louder with each passing second.
