The door burst open just as we reached the back exit, the flash of red and blue lights filling the warehouse. Gunfire broke out as some of the men tried to hold their ground, but Alexei yanked me into the alley, dragging me toward the SUV. We got into the car, and Alexei barked an order to the driver. The silence in the car was suffocating, as we heard the sound of my father’s empire under siege. My father stared straight ahead, his jaw clenched and his expression unreadable. When we finally got to the estate, and as my father walked into the mansion Alexei finally broke the silence. “You wanted to play with fire, Zee,” he said, his voice cold and hard. “But this world will burn you if you are not careful.” And then he left disappearing into the shadows of the estate leaving me alone with the weight of what I had just witnessed, and the feeling that I’d crossed a line that could never be uncrossed. But in the depths of my mind, I felt a spark of something, an understanding, a drive that I couldn't ignore. If my father’s empire was built on secrets and lies then I would find my path within. I would be ready, not to inherit his legacy but to forge one of my own. I couldn't sleep that night, the events of the night lingered like a smoke, thick and suffocating long after we had returned to the estate. I could still feel the weight of Alexei's warning, his voice echoing in my mind. But I was not willing to back now, not now when I was closer to understanding my father’s empire, unraveling the secrets around me. The next morning, the estate felt unusually quiet, as though everyone was still on edge from the raid. I moved cautiously through the halls, my eyes scanning every corner and every shadow. My father was nowhere to be seen, likely dealing with the fallout of the operation. But I knew exactly where to find Alexei. I found him in the training room, sparring against a punching bag with a focus so intense it seemed he was striking out against more than just an opponent. His muscles tensed with each hit, and his movement was fluid and deadly. But he stopped when he saw me, his gaze steely as if he’d been expecting me. “You don't take advice well, do you?” he asked, wiping the sweat from his brow. “I came to say thank you,” I replied, ignoring the sarcasm in his tone. “If not for you, I would have been caught in the crossfire.” He leaned his head, his expression unreadable. “I did what I had to. But you shouldn't have been there in the first place. This isn't a world for curiosity.” “If you think I'm just curious you are mistaken, I'm not here to watch from the sidelines.” For a moment, a flicker of something—respect, perhaps—crossed his face, but it was gone as quickly as it came. “Then tell me, Zee,” he said, his voice quiet but laced with challenge. “What exactly are you here for?” I hesitated, my mind racing. I wanted to tell him I was here to learn, to protect myself against the darkness that surrounded us, to be ready to take control if I had to. But I couldn't bring myself to say any of it, not yet. Instead, I took a step closer to covering the gap between us. “I'm here to understand. To understand the empire, the people, and……you.” His jaw tightened and for a brief second, he looked away. “Understanding you say, understanding comes with a price, Zee, one that most aren't willing to pay.” And then he leaned in, his face just an inch from mine. I could feel his breath which made my whole body heat with sensation. “ I see, I thought you were not interested in taking over your father’s empire. What changed? Why this sudden interest?” His eyes were still fixed on my face, I was already feeling uneasy. He leaned in again as if he was going to kiss me. I gulped, a heat sensation rolling from my head to my toes. I was about to reply when the door swung open and one of my father’s men stepped in, his face drawn. “Zee, Alexei,” he said, urgency threading his voice.” Your father wants to see you both. Now.” We both followed him to my father’s private meeting room, a room I had rarely been allowed to enter. The walls were lined with maps and documents, evidence of the empire he had painstakingly built over the years. But now there was tension in the room, a c***k in the carefully controlled facade. My father sat at the head of the table, his gaze sharp as he watched us enter. “ There has been a violation,” he said without preamble, his tone colder than I’d ever heard it. “There is someone on the inside that is leaking out information to the authorities.” I felt my stomach twist. He was talking about last night’s raid, it wasn't just a coincidence someone had betrayed us. “I want the both of you,” he continued, his gaze flicking between Alexei and me,” to find out who had done this. Last night’s operation was only shared with the most trusted circle, which means the traitor is close. Very close.” Alexei and I exchanged a glance, and I could see the same resolve in his eyes that I felt in mine. This was no longer about simply observing the empire; this was not about protecting it and protecting myself. Because if there was a traitor they wouldn't stop until they had taken down everything and everyone in their path. My father stood up, crossing his arms as he looked at us. “Zee, you said you wanted to be more involved in my empire, well this is your chance to prove it. Find me the leak and prove to me you’re ready for this life.” I felt my stomach drop. I wasn't expecting any task soon, at least not the one that was dealing with finding out who the mole was. But I had to show him I was ready, I nodded feeling the weight of his words. This was a tear that could determine whether or not I truly had a place in his empire. “Do you have any leads?” Alexei said his voice cutting through my thoughts, his tone as cold as ever. My father’s gaze sharpened. “Ther e is one person who is been unusually secretive lately.”
