My father’s gaze sharpened. “There is one person who has been unusually secretive lately. Dante ” Dante was a family friend, someone who had been loyal to my father for years or so I had believed. But in this world, loyalties were fragile, easily fractured by greed or fear. If Dante was the traitor, it would mean betrayal on a level I hadn't anticipated. “I want you both to handle this discreetly,” my father continued. “If Dante is the leak, deal with it. If he doesn't find out who is.” And with that, he dismissed us, and Alexei and I left the room together, the silence between us heavy with spoken thoughts. Later that day I had gone to the kitchen to get a glass of water when I bumped into Alexei on his way out of the kitchen, he was shirtless, revealing his well-built masculine body. “Watch it” I snapped “I’m sorry” Alexei quickly apologized. “What are you doing up so late?” “I came down to get a glass of water, you?” I asked. “Same, I couldn't sleep,” Alexei replied. “Hmm……..” I cleared my throat and continued. “So about that day at the dock…..” And then Andrey walked in, interrupting me. Andrey was my father's right-hand man he was one of his top associates and trusted man but since Alexei had joined the empire Andrey had been competing for Igor’s attention and he hated Alexei for that, he hated him for taking his spot in Igor’s heart, even though he was still the number one of his men. “What is going on here Zee, is he harassing you?” he asked, his gaze heavy on Alexei. “I’m fine Andrey” I replied. “You better be careful around here don't go about thinking you’re the boss because you’re the boss's favourite now, I got my eyes on you,” Andrey said with hate in his eyes “Andrey, I just said I am fine and he wasn't harassing me, please stop creating a scene,” I said and walked out. I hated how Andrey would always overreact to certain things, I always saw it as him doing too much to gain favour from my father. One time when he was still my bodyguard he had beaten up someone that I went out on a date with. My date had mistakenly spilt water on me, the person was hospitalized for days and when he was discharged he blocked my number and that was the end. Andrey was the reason all the dates I had gone to had never worked out, he seemed too possessive of me. The following night Alexei and I made our way to one of the city’s quieter clubs, a place that Dante was known to visit often. The club had low music and dim lights, the kind of place where secrets could thrive in the shadows. We slipped through the crowd scanning for any signs of Dante. When we finally saw him, he was sitting in a corner, nursing a glass of whiskey and speaking in hushed tones with a man I didn't recognize. Alexei and I exchanged a glance, and he nodded, slipping into the shadows to watch from a distance while I approached the table. “Hello Dante,” I greeted, forcing a smile as I sat down across from him. He looked up, surprise flickering in his eyes before he quickly masked it with a grin. “Hello, Zee. What a surprise, what brings you to this part of town.” “I could ask you the same,” I replied keeping my tone light.”I thought I’d find you at one of Father’s gatherings. His expression stuttered for a moment, just a split second but it was enough to know he was hiding something. “I have been busy,” he said, his voice a little too casual. “Business dealings, you know how it is.” “Hmmmm, I see a business that keeps you away from the family uh?” I asked my voice sharper than I had intended. He moved uncomfortably, his gaze darting to the man beside him, who was now watching us with an unreadable expression. “Do you need anything, Zee?” “I need to know if I can trust you, Dante,” I said leaning forward, lowering my voice. A flash of anger crossed his face, quickly replaced by something darker, almost desperate. “Trust is a fragile thing in this world, Zee. And sometimes, survival means making… sacrifices.” My stomach twisted as his words sank in. Sacrifices. I didn't want to believe it but the truth was staring me in the face. Dante has betrayed us, betrayed my father and now he is a danger to us all. But before I could react, Akexei stepped out of the shadows. “It's all over Dante. We know everything.” Dante’s face paled and he pushed back from the table, his eyes were wide with panic. “You don't understand,” he said. “I had no choice. I was threatened that if I didn't cooperate they would have destroyed everything.” “Everything? Or just you?” Alexei asked, his voice was like Ice. Dante’s gaze moved between us, as realization dawned in his eyes he understood there was no escape. He swallowed his shoulders slumping in defeat. “Please just tell your father I never wanted this, I was only trying to protect myself,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper. “Protect yourself by putting us all in danger?” I asked, my voice shaking with anger. I had trusted him, he was family And he had shattered that trust in an instant. “I made a mistake, Zee. But….you don't understand what they are capable of.” Dante said. Alexei’s eyes hardened. “We understand enough and now you will pay the price for your actions.” He stepped forward, his hand reaching towards his jacket pocket and I felt the weight of the moment, the finality of it all. I wanted to look away to escape from the harsh reality of this world but I knew I couldn't. This was the price of the life I was born into. In this world loyalty was everything and betrayal came with a steep price. With one swift motion, Alexei d ealt the blow and Dante slumped forward, his betrayal finally laid to rest.
