My heart thudded in my chest as I picked up the documents, flipping through the front page. The words were sparse, coded in bureaucratic jargon. “Confidential?” I muttered. But what was the content of this document, and just how deep did Alexei’s loyalty to my father truly run? The silence in Alexei’s room felt like a trap. My fingers brushed over the edges of the confidential document as I held it open, my heart pounding as I took in the coded names, locations, and dates scattered across the pages. The words were evasive, the kind that was told more by what they concealed than what they revealed. But one line caught my eye: “Final transfer is scheduled for 23:45, Dock 8.” My mind raced with questions. What does this mean? Was he hiding anything, or was he keeping such significant plans from my father? Or….was my father involved and using Alexei to clean up his mess? Soon I heard footsteps echoing outside the door, and quickly I shut the file, placing it back exactly where I found it. I slipped out of the room, my heart still racing just as Alexei rounded the corner. He stopped when he saw me, a glimmer of suspicion flashing in his eyes. “Zee… What are you doing here?” he said, masking his surprise with a calm expression. “I was on my way to meet you my father had sent for you,” I replied smoothly, trying to keep my voice steady. He nodded, watching me carefully. “I was about to see him myself.” There was a heavy pause between us, as I struggled not to give anything away. Alexei was the smart type, he had always been observant the type to pick up on even the smallest tells, and right now I felt like I was one wrong move from giving myself away. I needed to steer his attention somewhere else. “Your father seems focused on tonight’s operation,” he said as If he was testing me. “Doesn't he always seem so?” I disagreed. “Dad had never wasted time with small plans.” Alexei smiled, his gaze unwavering. “True. But tonight does feel significant.” Significant, if only he knew that I had stumbled onto his little secret. But I wasn't sure if I could risk letting on that I have seen the document. Not yet. “Well, good luck with that,” I said, as I brushed past him making my way to my room. As I did I could feel his eyes on my back, lingering with suspicion with questions he wasn't voicing. Later that night I found myself tossing in bed I couldn't sleep. My mind whirring with questions. At midnight I found myself pacing the length of my room running through every possible scenario, every angle of this twisted game my father and Alexei seemed to be playing. Dock 8. The words kept running in my mind, pulling at my curiosity until I could no longer resist them. Picking up dark clothes that I had kept stashed away the type my father would hate to see me in. I walked through the silent halls of my father's estate and slipped out into the night, taking care to avoid the guards patrolling the grounds. The city beyond our estate was alive with shadows. It had always looked different at night, its towering buildings and bustling streets were a smokescreen for the darker forces that controlled it. But tonight was different as I walked the backstreets and alleyways towards the docks the city felt ominous, its familiar darkness tinged with an unsettling sense of foreboding. When I arrived at dock 8, it looked before me, an expanse of metal and concrete was on the edge of the waterfront. The air was a bit cold laced with the sharp scent of salt and gasoline. I moved closer, ducking behind a stack of crates scanning the area. And then I saw him. Alexei was standing near a group of shadowed figures by a cargo ship, his expression steely as he exchanged words with a man in a sharp suit that I didn't recognize. They were talking in low tunes and glancing around as if wary of prying eyes. The stranger handed Alexei a heavy duffel bag which he took with a nod, carrying it on his shoulder. “What was in the bag? And why wasn't he reporting this to my father?” I muttered to myself. I tried to hear him but I couldn't, I kept wondering if he was sent by my father. After they spoke for a while the stranger disappeared into the shadows and Alexei turned to inspect the duffel bag. I watched him with bated breath, questions and possibilities spinning in my mind. I took a step back, ready to retreat before he would notice me, and then I heard a footstep from behind which made me freeze. “Well, well look who we have here,” a voice drawled from the darkness. I turned around my heart racing and found myself face-to-face with one of Dad’s older enforcers, his eyes narrowing as he took in my attire and presence. “What are you doing here at this time of the night?” he asked, the suspicion in his gaze mirroring Alexei’s from earlier. “Nothing really, I was just curious about my father’s latest plans so I thought I’d take a look myself.” “Hmmm,” he replied, he’d looked unconvinced, and a cruel smile was twisting on his lips. “You should know your father doesn't like it when people snoop around his affairs.” “I'm sure he won't mind, I am family,” I replied. He took a step forward and I took a step backwards, feeling the cold press of the metal crates against my back. But before he could get any closer, a figure moved in the corner of my eye. In a swift, lethal motion, he had the enforcer in a chokehold, one arm wrapped around his neck while the other held a knife to his throat. The enforcer froze, his eyes widening in shock. “Zee,” Alexei said, his voice calm and commanding. “Go now.” I didn't move for the next five seconds. There was something dark and dangerous in his eyes, a ferocity that chilled me to the core. But in that instant, I knew one thing was certain; Alexei had seen me and he knew I had been watching. I turned and ran, disappearing into the night not even taking a glance. Back at the estate, I lay in bed my heart still pounding in my chest as my head replayed the events I had just seen. The exchange, Alexei’s ruthless efficiency, it all felt like a dangerous puzzle, one where the pieces only hinted at the bigger picture and I couldn't help but be curious about whatever he was up to. At breakfast the following day my father’s gaze lingered on me with a mix of curiosity and concern. He could sense my mood. “Zee dear,” he began, watching me closely. “You look…..restless. Is something wrong?” “I'm fine father,” I replied with a smile that didn't quite reach my eyes. “It's just a lot on my mind.” He nodded, studying me with a father’s keen intuition. But before he could press further, Alexei appeared in the doorway, his gaze meeting mine with a glint of something unreachable. He nodded in greeting, but his expression was guarded, a fortress of calm that hid the storm I knew was brewing beneath. And at that very moment, I realized the game had only just begun. I was no longer just a bystander in my father's world. I was on the edge of a secret war, one that could destroy everything I’d ever known or, finally set me free.
