Chapter 5: The Intruder
The mansion plunged into darkness.
Only the flashing red emergency lights illuminated the endless hallways.
INTRUDER ALERT.
INTRUDER ALERT.
The alarm echoed through every room.
Upstairs, Martha screamed again.
"Mrs. Knight!"
"They're inside!"
Isabella's heart pounded violently.
Alexander reacted instantly.
"Ethan."
"Yes, sir."
"Lock down the east wing."
"It's already been breached."
Alexander's expression hardened.
"Take Isabella to the panic room."
"I'm not leaving you!" Isabella protested.
"You don't have a choice."
Before she could argue again, a loud crash came from the second floor.
Boom!
Glass shattered.
Someone had broken in.
Footsteps thundered across the hallway.
Heavy.
Fast.
Purposeful.
Alexander reached beneath a nearby table and removed a sleek black handgun hidden inside a secret compartment.
Isabella stared.
"You keep a gun in your living room?"
"I keep them everywhere."
He checked the magazine with practiced ease.
"Stay behind Ethan."
"What about you?"
"I'm ending this."
Before anyone could stop him, Alexander disappeared into the darkness.
---
The mansion felt eerily silent.
Ethan guided Isabella through a narrow corridor.
"This way."
"Where are we going?"
"There's a secure room beneath the west wing."
Another crash echoed behind them.
The lights flickered.
Suddenly—
A masked man dropped from the balcony directly in front of them.
He pointed a pistol at Ethan.
"Move and you die."
Isabella gasped.
The man slowly turned toward her.
"So..."
He smiled beneath the mask.
"You're the new Mrs. Knight."
His voice sent chills through her body.
"You've caused quite a lot of trouble."
Ethan stepped in front of Isabella.
"If you want her..."
"You'll have to go through me."
The intruder laughed.
"I was hoping you'd say that."
He pulled the trigger.
Bang!
Ethan shoved Isabella aside.
The bullet tore through Ethan's shoulder.
He collapsed against the wall.
"Ethan!"
"Run!" he shouted.
Isabella hesitated.
"Run!"
Tears filled her eyes as she sprinted down the hallway.
The masked man chased after her.
---
She had never run so fast.
Her wedding shoes slipped against the polished marble floor.
Every heartbeat echoed inside her ears.
Behind her...
The footsteps were getting closer.
She reached a grand staircase.
Without thinking, she rushed upstairs.
Wrong choice.
The upper floor had only one exit.
She found herself trapped on a long balcony overlooking the entrance hall.
No way forward.
No way back.
The masked man slowly walked toward her.
"There's nowhere left to go."
She looked over the railing.
It was nearly twenty feet to the marble floor below.
Too high to jump.
The man raised his gun.
"You should never have married Alexander Knight."
Her hands trembled.
"What do you want?"
"You."
"Why?"
"You'll understand before you die."
He aimed carefully.
"This is the end."
A single gunshot echoed through the mansion.
Bang!
The masked man's weapon flew from his hand.
He cried out in pain.
Alexander stood at the opposite end of the balcony.
His pistol remained perfectly steady.
"I warned you."
His voice was ice cold.
"Touch my wife..."
"...and you die."
The intruder laughed despite the blood running down his arm.
"So it's true."
Alexander walked forward slowly.
"You actually care about her."
"I said nothing of the sort."
"No?"
The intruder grinned.
"Then why risk your own life?"
Alexander didn't answer.
Instead...
He fired again.
The second bullet shattered the chandelier above the intruder.
Thousands of crystal pieces rained down.
Using the distraction, Alexander charged.
The two men collided violently.
Punches.
Elbows.
Knees.
Each strike landed with brutal force.
The intruder was clearly trained.
But Alexander fought with ruthless precision.
Within moments, the masked man was on the floor.
Alexander ripped away his mask.
Isabella's eyes widened.
The man's face looked familiar.
Very familiar.
Alexander froze.
"...You."
The injured man smiled through bloodstained teeth.
"It's been a long time..."
"...big brother."
Isabella stared in disbelief.
"Brother?"
Alexander's voice became dangerously quiet.
"I thought you were dead."
The man laughed.
"So did everyone else."
He slowly stood despite his injuries.
"You should have left me buried."
Alexander tightened his fists.
"What do you want, Victor?"
Victor Knight smiled.
"What belongs to me."
"The company."
"The fortune."
"And everything Grandfather left behind."
He looked directly at Isabella.
"Including the woman standing beside you."
Alexander stepped protectively in front of her.
"You'll never touch her."
Victor laughed again.
"We'll see."
Before anyone could react, the mansion's lights suddenly came back on.
Every television in the house switched on automatically.
A live news broadcast filled the room.
The anchor spoke urgently.
"Breaking News: Billionaire Alexander Knight is now the prime suspect in the disappearance of his younger brother, Victor Knight, who vanished five years ago."
The camera switched to an old family photograph.
Alexander.
Victor.
And an elderly man between them.
The reporter continued.
"Authorities have just issued an arrest warrant for Alexander Knight following newly uncovered evidence."
Police sirens began echoing outside the mansion.
Dozens of flashing blue lights surrounded the estate.
Victor smiled.
"Looks like..."
"...your time is finally up."
