Jack threw himself down on the couch in his sitting room, too exhausted to find his way to the bed. He shielded his face behind his forearm. “Computer,” he groaned. “Turn off the lights!” An instant later, his quarters were submerged in a darkness so deep you couldn’t be blamed for thinking you had wandered into a black hole. Starship designers were very careful about minimizing light pollution. Someone had to work the night shift, which meant that half the crew was sleeping during what would traditionally be considered the daylight hours. The walls were soundproofed for the same reason.
