The sun rose red over Blackwood Estate, staining the stone walls the color of old blood and making the whole pack look like they were already standing in a battlefield. It was the kind of dawn that promised violence or victory, and no one standing in the courtyard was sure which one they would get before the day ended. Elena stood at the tree line with Damien, and behind them were Marcus and Kiera. There was no army behind them, no reinforcements hidden in the trees, no secret enforcers waiting to attack. There were only four of them against fifty wolves who had not yet decided if they should bow to their Alpha or bare their teeth at his human mate.
“They’re waiting,” Marcus said, and his hand rested on the hilt of his sword with his knuckles white from how hard he was gripping it.
Damien looked at Elena and his eyes were silver, but calm in a way that made her chest hurt. “This is your last chance to run,” he said, and his voice was low enough that only she could hear. “If you go now, I will cover you. I will buy you time with my life if I have to. You can disappear to the human cities and no one from the pack will ever find you.”
Elena took his hand and her fingers were cold, but they did not shake, because she was done being afraid. “I am not running anymore,” she said. “I am done hiding in caves and shadows and running from people who hate me for something I did not choose. If they want me, they will have to take me in front of you, and they will have to go through you first.”
He nodded once, and then he lifted their joined hands to his mouth and pressed a kiss to her knuckles like it was a vow. “Together,” he said.
“Together,” she answered, and they walked toward the gates.

*The Council Hall was packed wall to wall with bodies and heat and fear and the smell of too many wolves in one room.* Every elder was there. Every pack leader from the border territories had come. Every wolf who could stand without shaking was present, and they all stared at Elena like she was a disease they had to cut out of the pack. Selene was on the dais and the Council seal hung around her neck on a thick gold chain that caught the torchlight and threw it back like a weapon. Rowan stood beside her with his arms crossed and his face made of stone. The moment Elena stepped into the hall the noise erupted, because fifty wolves could not keep quiet when they saw a human wearing the marks of their Alpha.
“Human!” someone shouted. “Exile!” another called. “Shame on the pack!” “Abomination!” “She will bring ruin to all of us!”
Selene raised her hands and the silence fell slow, like a blade dropping onto stone. “People of Blackwood,” she said, and her voice was sweet and poisoned and practiced from years of pretending to be Luna. “Today we decide the future of our pack. Alpha Damien Blackwood has broken law. He has mated a human. He has endangered us all. I hold the Council seal. By its power, I call for his removal, and the exile of the human before sunset.”
Boos filled the room. Cheers filled the room. Chairs scraped and wolves shifted on their feet and Elena felt Damien’s thumb brush over hers through the bond, steadying her.
Damien stepped forward and Elena stayed beside him because she was not letting go of his hand for anything. “You do not have the votes,” he said, and his voice carried to the back wall without him needing to shout.
“I have half the Council,” Selene said. “And I have law. That is more than you have, brother.”
Rowan stood. “Alpha Blackwood. Do you deny the charges?”
Damien did not look at him. He looked at the pack, at the young warriors, at the mothers holding children, at the wolves who had watched him grow up. “I deny nothing,” he said. “I claimed my mate. By blood. By bond. By moon. It is done, and it cannot be undone by any seal or any vote or any elder’s word.”
He pulled Elena’s collar down with his free hand and the two silver marks showed. They were fresh and they were glowing faint in the torchlight, and everyone could see them. Mated. Claimed. His.
Gasps moved through the hall like wind.
Selene’s face twisted. “Tricks. Illusion. She painted her skin. Any human with paint can do that.”
“It is not illusion,” Elena said, and her voice was steady even though her heart was racing. “Touch me and see.”
She walked to the front alone, and every eye in the room followed her. Rowan frowned. “What are you doing, girl?”
Elena stopped before him. “Elder. You think I am weak. You think I am nothing. So test me.”
She held out her hand.
Rowan stared at her for a long second and then he grabbed her wrist, hard enough to bruise. The bond flared. Silver light shot between them and Rowan jerked back like he had been burned. He stumbled two steps and nearly fell, and his eyes went wide with shock.
“That is the bond,” Elena said. “It is real. I am pack. Whether you like it or not. I can feel him. He can feel me. You cannot fake that. You cannot paint that.”
The hall went silent.
Selene slammed her hand on the dais. “Enough! Seal or no seal, she is human. She cannot be Luna. The law is clear. Tradition is clear.”
“Then ask the pack,” Damien said.
He turned to the crowd. “Blackwood. You have known me all my life. You know I do not lie. You know I do not break. Ask yourselves. Do you want an Alpha who runs from a bond, or one who stands by it, no matter the cost?”
Whispers moved through the crowd.
A young warrior stepped forward. “Alpha. Kael’s men came last night. You fought them. The human fought too. I saw her. She did not run. She stood her ground.”
Another voice. “She bled for you.”
Another. “She stood between you and a blade.”
Selene’s eyes went wild. “She manipulated you! She bewitched him! She used the bond to control—”
“Enough,” a voice said, and the doors opened.
An old wolf entered. White hair. Walking stick. Bent but not broken.
Elder Maeve.
She had not been seen in ten years. Not since the last civil war.
Maeve walked to the center slow. She looked at Elena. She looked at Damien. She looked at the marks on Elena’s neck. “The bond is old magic,” she said. “Older than the Council. Older than your seal, girl.”
She looked at Selene. “You cannot break what the moon made. You can only break yourself trying.”
Selene shook. “You are—”
“I am done hiding,” Maeve said. “This pack is divided because you are afraid. Afraid of change. Afraid of her.”
She pointed at Elena. “She is Luna. Accept it, or leave. Those are your choices.”
Gasps.
Rowan looked at the crowd. At the young wolves nodding. At the elders shifting. He was old, but he was not blind.
He sighed. “The vote is called. All in favor of removing Alpha Blackwood, raise your hand.”
Hands went up.
For Selene: Twenty.
Rowan’s voice was heavy. “All in favor of Alpha Blackwood and his Luna?”
Hands went up.
Thirty-one.
Silence.
Selene’s face went white. “No. No, you cannot— the seal—”
“It is done,” Rowan said.
Damien stepped forward. “Selene. Surrender the seal.”
Selene backed away. “I will not— I will not give it to her—”
Marcus moved fast. He had the seal in seconds. He did not hurt her. He just took it.
He held it up.
“It is over,” he said.
Selene looked at Elena. Hate. Pure, raw hate.
“You think you won,” she said. “You think this is the end.”
Elena met her eyes. “No. It is the beginning.”
Selene laughed. Bitter. Broken. “You will see.”
She turned. Ran. No one stopped her.
“Let her go,” Damien said.
Marcus frowned. “Alpha— she is dangerous—”
“She is broken,” Damien said. “She is not the threat now. Not today.”
He looked at Elena.
---
*Later, Damien stood with Elena on the dais.*
“Blackwood,” he said. “This is my Luna. Elena Carter. She is pack. She is mine. And she is yours to follow, or not. I will not force you.”
He turned to Elena. “Your turn.”
Elena stepped forward. Her legs shook. But her voice did not.
“I was not born a wolf,” she said. “I was born human. I was sold in a contract. I bled. I fought. I chose him, and he chose me.”
She looked at them all. “I do not have claws. I do not have a shift. But I have him. And I have you, if you will have me. I will bleed for this pack. I will fight for this pack. I will be Luna.”
Silence.
Then the young warrior knelt. One knee. Head down.
Then another.
Then ten more.
Kiera smiled, tears in her eyes.
Rowan did not kneel. But he nodded. Once.
It was enough.

*Night. Alpha’s chambers.*
The door shut with a soft click.
Elena exhaled. It felt like she had been holding her breath for days. “It is over.”
Damien pulled her to him. “It is just starting.”
He kissed her. Slow. Deep. No blood. No war. Just relief.
“I thought they would kill you,” he said against her mouth.
“I thought you would let them,” she said.
He laughed. Soft. “Never.”
He lifted her. Carried her to the bed.
“Damien—”
“Two days of hell,” he said. “You earned rest.”
He laid her down. Crawled over her.
His hand at her throat. Thumb over her marks.
“Mine,” he said.
“Yours,” she said.
He kissed her neck. Soft. Reverent. Like she was something holy.
The bond pulsed. Warm. Safe. Full.
Outside, the pack was quiet.
Inside, they were home.
Elena’s eyes closed. “Stay.”
“I am not going anywhere,” he said.
And he did not.
