Dawn broke grey over the ruined cave. Smoke still clung to the stone.
Elena sat on cold rock with Damien’s head in her lap. His breathing was even now. Deep. Alive. The mate bond pulsed between them, hot and constant, like a second heart under her ribs.
Her hands were red. His blood had dried in the lines of her palms. Her own blood was there too, from the cut she got fighting. Mixed now. Bonded now.
“Alpha,” Marcus said from the cave entrance. His voice was low. Careful. “We need to move. Kael’s dead, but his scouts will report back. And we’re exposed.”
Damien’s eyes opened. Silver. Clear. Human again, but only just.
“You’re staring,” he said. His voice was hoarse. Cracked from blood loss.
“You’re alive,” Elena said.
He sat up slowly. Too slowly. The wound at his side was closed. Not healed by medicine. Healed by her. Pale pink skin stretched over ribs where Kael’s silver blade had gone in.
Kiera, the pack healer, stared at it. Her hands shook. “I’ve read about mate bonds in the old texts. Healing through the bond. I never believed it. You… you pulled him back from death, Ms. Carter.”
Elena looked at her own hands. They were trembling. “I didn’t know how. I just… didn’t want him to go.”
“You loved him,” Kiera said simply. No judgment. Just fact. “The bond listens to that first.”
Damien’s jaw clenched at the word. Love. He didn’t look at Elena. He looked at the blood on the floor. At Kael’s body being dragged out by two enforcers.
“We don’t have time for this,” he said.
He stood. His knees buckled. Elena was on her feet before he hit the ground, her shoulder under his arm.
“I’m fine,” he said. But he leaned on her. Just a little.
Marcus cleared his throat. “Alpha. There’s more.”
The way he said it made Elena’s stomach drop.
“Selene,” Marcus said. “She’s gone. And she took the Council’s seal.”
The seal.
Elena didn’t know what it looked like, but she knew what it meant. Authority. Law. Power to make or break an Alpha.
Damien’s eyes went black. Not wolf. Rage. Pure, cold rage. “Where?”
“No tracks,” Marcus said. “She planned this. She had help inside.”
Elena felt it through the bond. Betrayal. Fury. Grief. “Who is she to you?” she asked quietly.
Damien’s silence was louder than words.
“Betrothed,” Marcus answered for him. “Three years. Before you. It was politics. A merger between packs.”
Elena’s throat closed. “She was supposed to be your Luna.”
“She was supposed to be loyal,” Damien said. He finally looked at Elena. At her neck. At the two faint silver marks there. Mated. Claimed. His. “She chose power instead.”
He reached up and touched the marks with one finger. Light. Possessive. “Then we hunt her. Before she uses that seal to declare war on us.”

*Three hours later. Blackwood Estate.*
The estate looked like a battlefield. Scorched grass from fire. Cracks in the marble from shifting. Blood washed off the steps, but the smell remained.
Yet the pack had gathered. Fifty wolves. Warriors, elders, healers, children watching from the balcony. All of them staring.
At Elena.
At her neck.
The whispers started the second she walked in beside Damien. “Human.” “Mated.” “Disgrace.” “Abomination.”
Elder Rowan stood on the dais. White hair. Ice eyes. He looked like he wanted to carve her out of the world.
“Alpha Blackwood,” he said. His voice echoed. “Explain this.”
Damien stepped forward. He didn’t let go of Elena’s hand. “I claimed my mate. In blood. In front of the moon. By pack law, it’s complete and binding.”
“To a human,” Rowan spat. “While Selene runs free with our seal. You’ve left the pack vulnerable, Alpha.”
“She left us vulnerable,” Damien said. “Not Elena. Selene stole the seal. Elena bled to protect this pack.”
Elena lifted her chin. Her legs were shaking under the dress, but her voice was steady. “I killed one of Kael’s men last night with a spear. I stood between him and your Alpha. I’m not a liability. I’m Luna.”
The hall erupted. Half shocked. Half furious.
Rowan’s eyes narrowed. “You have no wolf. No shift. No lineage. No bloodline to bind you to us. What are you to the Blackwood Pack?”
Damien answered before Elena could breathe. “She is my mate. She is my Luna. That is the only lineage that matters from this day forward.”
Silence. Heavy. Absolute.
The great doors opened.
Selene.
She walked in like the hall belonged to her. Silver dress, clean. Hair perfect. And in her hand, held high, a gold medallion on a chain.
The Council seal. It caught the torchlight and threw it back.
“Brother,” she said to Damien. Sweet. Poisonous. “You look like hell.”
Marcus moved to block her path. “Stand down, Selene. Surrender the seal.”
She held it higher. “By the authority granted to me by the Council of Twelve, I declare Alpha Damien Blackwood unfit to rule. He has mated a human. He has endangered the pack. He has broken tradition. I am calling an immediate vote of no confidence.”
Gasps. Chairs scraped.
“You can’t,” Kiera said from the side. “Only the full Council in session can—”
“Half the Council is already with me,” Selene said. She looked right at Rowan. “Elder Rowan included.”
Rowan didn’t deny it. He looked away.
Damien’s hand tightened on Elena’s. Through the bond she felt it. He’d feared this. Hoped he was wrong.
“Then hold your vote,” Damien said. “But do it right. Full moon. Three days from now. Neutral ground. Every pack leader in the territory present to witness.”
“That’s not law,” Rowan started.
“It is now,” Damien said. “I am still Alpha until the moon. Until then, I set the terms.”
He turned his back on them. “Marcus. Lock the estate down. No one in. No one out without my word.”
He pulled Elena with him toward the side corridor.
---
*Later. Alpha’s private chambers.*
The door shut with a heavy thud.
Elena pulled her hand free. “Three days? That’s it?”
Damien paced to the window. Moonlight cut across his face. “Yes.”
“That’s not a strategy. That’s a countdown to an execution.”
He stopped. Looked at her. “You think I can’t keep you alive for three days?”
“I think Selene has the Council, half the elders, and your history,” Elena said. “I think they hate me because I’m an easy target.”
Damien crossed the room in two strides. He stopped just short of touching her. “Then we make them fear you instead of pity you.”
He lifted his hand. His thumb brushed over the silver marks on her neck.
“The bond is new,” he said. “Raw. In three days it needs to be unbreakable. They need to see it. Feel it.”
Elena’s breath caught. “What are you saying?”
“Training,” he said. “Fighting. Command. Survival. Not… that. Not yet.”
She shoved at his chest. “Don’t you dare tease me.”
“I’m not,” he said. His voice dropped. “If you can’t fight, they’ll kill you the second I’m looking the other way. If you can’t speak to them, they’ll never follow you as Luna.”
He dropped his hands. “So we train. You and me. Alone. No guards. No interruptions. Three days.”
Elena stared at him. “You want to teach a human to fight wolves.”
“I want to teach my Luna to survive them,” he said.
---
*The training yard. Night.*
Moonlight. Cold air. The smell of sweat and dirt.
Damien was merciless. No bond leniency. No soft words.
“Again,” he said. “You drop your left shoulder when you’re tired. Every wolf here will see it.”
Elena swung the wooden sword. He blocked. The impact jarred her teeth.
“I’m human,” she snapped. “I don’t have wolf strength.”
“Then you need wolf speed,” he said. “Wolf cunning. Wolf cruelty.”
She lunged. He sidestepped. She hit the dirt hard.
Damien was over her in a second. One knee beside her hip. Hand at her throat. Not squeezing. Just resting.
“Give up?” he asked.
Elena stared up at him. Sweat in her eyes. Dirt on her face. Rage in her chest. “Never.”
His eyes darkened. “Good.”
He let her up.
They went again. And again.
She bled from scrapes. He didn’t. She cursed. He didn’t.
Finally she threw the sword down. It clattered. “I can’t. I’m too slow. Too weak.”
Damien picked it up. Held it out. “Yes. You can.”
Elena took it. Her hands shook.
They kept going.
---
*Midnight.*
Elena was on her knees in the dirt, gasping. Damien crouched in front of her.
“You did good,” he said quietly.
Elena laughed. It hurt. “I got destroyed.”
“You stood up,” he said. “Every single time you fell. That’s what matters.”
He reached out. His thumb wiped blood from the corner of her mouth.
Elena froze.
Damien froze too.
The bond surged. Heat. Need. Want. His was hers. Hers was his.
“You’re hurt,” he said.
“So are you,” she whispered.
His eyes dropped to her mouth.
“Damien—”
“Don’t,” he said. His voice was rough. “If I kiss you now, I won’t stop. And we don’t have time.”
Elena’s heart hammered. “Three days,” she whispered.
“Three days,” he agreed.
He stood. Offered his hand.
She took it.
---
*Later. Elena’s room.*
Kiera cleaned her cuts with cool cloths. “He’s hard on you.”
“He has to be,” Elena said. “Selene won’t be.”
Kiera tied a bandage around her forearm. “The Council is meeting tomorrow. Without you. Without Damien.”
Elena sat up straight. “What?”
“Rowan called an emergency session,” Kiera said. “They’re going to try to pass an edict to exile you before the full moon. The seal gives Selene legal cover.”
Elena stood. “Then we go to the meeting.”
Kiera grabbed her wrist. “If you go, they’ll arrest you on sight. The seal makes it legal.”
Elena looked at the door.
Through the bond, she felt Damien. Anger. Movement. He was coming. Fast.
She smiled. “Let them try.”
The door slammed open.
Damien. Blood on his knuckles. Not his. Rage in his eyes.
“We’re leaving,” he said. “Now.”
Elena didn’t ask where. She didn’t ask why.
She followed him.
