Chapter 12- THE ALPHA’S RULES

1263 Words
The next morning came far too soon. I had barely closed my eyes before a knock rattled my chamber door. It wasn’t gentle—it was commanding, echoing through the room like a summons from fate itself. I sat up groggily, the silk sheets tangling around me like another kind of trap. “What now?” I muttered, but the door opened before I could even move. Two guards strode inside, dressed in armor so polished it caught the morning sun and blinded me. Their shoulders were squared, their expressions blank, but their sharp gazes pinned me where I sat. “The King requests your presence,” one said. His voice was flat, stripped of anything human. My jaw clenched. Requests, he said, but the iron in his tone told me it was nothing less than an order. I rose slowly, tugging the thin robe around my shoulders. “Tell him if he wants me, he can come here himself.” The second guard’s eyes flicked to me, and for the first time, I saw a spark of something beyond duty. Disdain. “Refuse him, and you’ll learn quickly what happens to those who test the Alpha’s patience.” My wolf stirred uneasily, ears pricked. I hated that she felt the truth in his words. Fine. I would go. But not for him—for myself. ⸻ The corridors seemed longer than yesterday, winding endlessly through the palace. Every wall was a monument to power: painted murals of wolves conquering lands, weapons mounted as trophies, banners heavy with dust and pride. The deeper we went, the heavier the air became, until at last the guards opened towering double doors. Inside, a long obsidian table stretched across the room. Around it sat elders, generals, and advisors. Their heads turned as one, eyes sharp and calculating, voices falling into silence the moment I entered. And at the head of it all stood him. The Alpha King. Golden-eyed. Untouchable. Radiating authority so thick the room seemed to bow with his presence. “Come,” he said. One word, smooth as velvet, sharp as a blade. I forced my feet forward, every step echoing across the stone floor. When I reached his side, I didn’t bow. I didn’t lower my gaze. I lifted my chin and met his eyes, even as my heart hammered. “Why am I here?” I asked. The corners of his lips lifted faintly. “Because you cannot survive in my kingdom without knowing its laws.” ⸻ The session began like a ceremony. He listed them one by one, his voice carrying across the chamber, each decree as cold as steel. The Alpha’s word is absolute. Betrayal is punishable by death. Challenges are answered in blood. Bonds are sacred, unbreakable, eternal. An outsider with the mark of royalty will never leave unguarded. Whispers rippled through the council at that last law. Eyes shifted to me, some hungry, some afraid. My pulse spiked. “You made that one for me,” I hissed under my breath. His golden gaze slid toward me. “Perhaps.” The smugness in his voice burned. Fury surged through me, hotter than fear. I slammed my palm against the table. “I am not your subject. I don’t belong to your rules.” Gasps erupted around us. A councilman leaned forward, grey eyes glittering. “She dares defy you, my King. This outsider—” The Alpha raised a hand, silencing him. His gaze never left mine. “She dares because she has not learned.” His voice lowered, but it still carried through the chamber. “You will obey these laws. Not because I demand it, but because without them, you—and everyone tied to you—will bleed.” I stiffened. “What do you mean, everyone tied to me?” He leaned closer, his breath brushing my ear, his words for me alone. “Your presence disrupts balance. Rivals already plot. If they cannot strike at you, they will strike at those you once called family. Every refusal of yours paints a target on their backs.” The blood drained from my face. He straightened, satisfied, and turned back to his council as though he hadn’t just sliced me open with words. ⸻ Hours passed, filled with pledges, decrees, arguments. I barely heard them. My mind kept circling his warning. My family—already rejecting me—would they pay for my defiance here? When the session ended, the Alpha dismissed his council with a flick of his hand. The moment the last door shut, I rounded on him. “You twisted, cruel—” The slam of the chamber door cut off my words. He had caged me in here with him, his golden eyes glowing in the dim light. “You think me cruel?” he asked softly, stalking toward me. “You have not seen cruelty yet.” I backed against the wall, fists clenched. “You don’t get to control me.” His arm braced against the stone beside my head, trapping me. His face hovered inches from mine, his voice a low growl. “I already do.” The heat of him seeped into me, dangerous, intoxicating. My wolf pushed against my skin, restless, drawn. I wanted to shove him away. I wanted to claw at him. I wanted— I swallowed hard. “Then what’s the point of your rules? To chain me tighter? To remind me I belong to you?” He smirked, wolfish, his breath hot against my lips. “My rules exist because without them, kingdoms fall. Wolves turn on each other. Blood soaks the ground. Without my rules, you would already be dead.” I forced my glare to hold steady. “Maybe I’d rather burn than bow.” His smirk deepened, wicked. “Then burn with me.” ⸻ That night, back in my chambers, sleep refused me. I lay awake, staring at the carved ceiling, the words my rules, my kingdom, my weapon echoing again and again. The palace hummed with unseen threats. Every rustle outside my door, every whisper of wind through the balcony made my wolf tense. I knew what he meant now—spies, traitors, rivals. They were all waiting. Watching. And still, beneath the fury, beneath the fear, something worse gnawed at me. My wolf wanted him. She had listened when he spoke of fire and law. She had wanted when he stood too close, when his voice dipped low, when his eyes burned like they saw everything I was trying to hide. I hated her for it. I hated him more. But as the moonlight spilled across the floor, I realized something that chilled me more than all his laws combined. The longer I stayed here, the less I wanted to leave. 🌙 Chapter 12 – The Alpha’s Rules (Summary) Aria is summoned to the Alpha King’s council, where the cold, ironclad laws of his kingdom are laid bare.
