Ch. 1, Summer Break

998 Words
The sky is crystal blue, today. Fluffy clouds slowly drift by, carried away by a gentle breeze. The birds are chirping their tranquil tune nearby, and the sun is an orb of light and warmth. I lay my head on Katherine's lap, savoring the last rays of sunshine before winter and fall fight for their grasp of the earth. Soon the clouds will start playing hide-and-seek with the sun, and occasionally, they'll let out their cries. We have a week until school starts, and my anxiety is already building and suffocating me. Soon we'll be choked by students flanking the halls, soon we'll have to get up early, we'll have to study, we'll have to interact, we'll have to do tests, and we'll have to get up early. God, I'll dread that for sure. I'm in no way a morning person, oh, and you want to avoid talking to me before I get my coffee. I'm f*****g Satan without my coffee. "I don't want to go back to school," I mumble as the wind nips at my face and plays with the stray strands of my hair. Today, I had gotten up early to braid my hair and to choose my outfit for the day. I had decided on something simple; a white shirt with hearts stamped on it and denim shorts. "Be happy it's our last year," Katherine laughs. While I had worn something simple and covering, Kat had chosen something rather daring; a strapless red dress that barely covered her cleavage. "And then," I start, staring down at her as I get up "Then we have university, and then adult life" I scoff, hiding my hands away in my pockets. Kat clicks her tongue, "Stop worrying so much, you're smart". Right, I'm smart. Every so often, I wonder what being smart means. Although I get pretty good grades, I'm just an average student who studies a lot. I bite the inside of my cheek and start walking towards my bike, I had thrown it on the grass as soon I had arrived. My poor bike was barely usable anymore, I have used it for years and I have thrown it around and crashed into trees and traffic lights. And yet, this old piece of metal and string and wires and whatever it's made of still holds. Kat whistles at me as I pick up my bike, "You should get a new one," she states before throwing her backpack over her shoulder. That backpack should've been thrown away a long ass time ago, unlike my bike, its strings are barely holding it together. "Nah. I prefer my old friend. Anyway," I start, "Are you going to call Theo?" I ask and mount my bike. My ass digs in the exposed metal part of the seat, causing me to yelp. "I think he's at football practice," she says with a roll of her eyes. Theo is Katherine's older brother, and also my friend. People seem to think they're twins, just because they look extremely similar. However, they're two entirely different people. "Football practice is always so important, huh?" I laugh, an awkward and stupid sound. Kat shakes her head, her chestnut hair going back and forth like a curtain being pushed around by the wind. "Hey, would you like to meet a friend of mine?" she suddenly asks. I raise an eyebrow and get off my bike, I walk towards her. "Who?" I ask, tilting my head to the side. She looks at me and releases a sigh. "His name is Dion," she starts, opening and closing her mouth like a gaping fish, "and he's an old friend of mine. Well, an ex. He's my only guy best friend," she finishes, shrugging her shoulder. I gape at her just slightly. Did she just shrug it off? An ex? Who in the world was this person? "You know him as... Dirtbag.he's the person who you wanted to strangle a few years back," she adds and takes a tiny step back. I look at her in utter disbelief, my mind drowning in vicious and violent thoughts. 'Dirtbag' had broken Kat's heart two years ago. His reason? Their relationship wasn't entertaining anymore. All I knew was that he was cute and a year older than us. Oh! And that he was a scumbag. "f**k no." I hiss my answer and turn around, ready to get away; far, far, far, far away from this conversation. Hell, I'll rent a boat if I have to. "Tiff. Please listen to me. You need friends," Kat calls, her voice cracking on the word friends. I whirl around to face her, my face sketched into a scowl. "I have friends." I snap, my voice sounding nowhere near pleasant. I notice Kat flinch and her body tense. Not only that, but I notice her quick intake of air and her fingers twitching. "Who exactly? Harry the librarian is retired. Wanda is three times your age, and don't even get me started on Mr. Jones. He's been your teacher for the past 4 years," she shrieks, running a hand through her hair. "You need friends your age." "I have you and Theo," I say as I cross my arms over my chest, "And Jason" Jason is Kat's boyfriend, they started dating in January. He's decent, I guess. Although, he has tried flirting with me more than once. I've been suspecting him for a long ass time, sadly he hasn't done anything wrong - yet. "Babe," Kat approaches me, her eyes scanning me from head to toe, making my stomach churn. "Meet him once. That's all I ask" I gulp. Well, maybe if I meet him, I could potentially and finally get my revenge. Not to mention, I am curious. I let out a frustrated sigh and scrub at my face, my nails slightly scratching my cheeks. "Fine," I say, and Kat squeals. Is it too late to take it back? Probably not. I've dug my own stupid grave.
