Chapter 4: Whispers from the Past

333 Words
Morning dawned heavy with fog. The city seemed to hold its breath, as if waiting for the next move in a deadly game. The team gathered in silence, everyone nursing minor wounds or stiff limbs from the night’s pursuit. Zhang Lěi tapped away on her keyboard. "The rooftop cameras caught part of the fight. I’ve isolated the frames — there’s something you’ll want to see." Everyone leaned in. In the blurred footage, a glint on the killer’s wrist caught Ruòxī’s attention. "Pause," she said. "Zoom on that." A beaded bracelet. Worn. Red and black stones. Her eyes narrowed. "I’ve seen that before." Yīchén caught her look. "Where?" She hesitated. "Years ago, in Nanjing. A string of killings, all unsolved. One suspect was never caught. He wore the same bracelet." Hyunwoo stepped in. "You think it’s the same man?" Ruòxī nodded. "It’s him. I know it." The room fell silent. Jiāyào broke the quiet. "If that’s true, we need everything from that old case. Now." "I’ll request the files," Lěi said. "And I’ll cross-reference it with local sales for that bracelet design." Meanwhile, Hyunwoo gently guided Ruòxī aside. "Are you okay?" he asked. She looked down, voice distant. "He killed someone I knew. A mentor." He said nothing — just stood by her side, his presence anchoring her. "We’ll get him," he said. She looked up, and this time, she believed it. --- Later that evening, the team gathered around an old case file from Nanjing. "Victims were found in a similar pose," Zhìkǎi said. "Same symbol, same surgical cuts." "But this one wasn’t signed ‘*’," Yǔtóng noted. "This one was signed ‘*’ — ghost." Yīchén leaned back. "He’s evolved. Changed his signature. Or maybe he’s sending a message." "Or challenging us," Hyunwoo added. They all knew what it meant: The killer wasn’t just a threat. He was personal now. Outside, the wind howled through the alleys of Seoul, carrying with it the promise of blood. And the hunt continued.
