Chapter 14: The Choice
Lila had imagined seeing Ethan Carter again many times.
Sometimes in anger.
Sometimes in sadness.
Sometimes in the quiet moments before falling asleep when memories had a way of returning without permission.
But she never imagined seeing him here.
At the Hawthorne Estate.
Standing in front of her like the last few months had not happened.
Like he had not been the person who left her alone at the exact moment she needed him most.
"Lila."
His voice was softer than she remembered.
That almost made it worse.
Because she remembered a different Ethan.
The one who used to bring her coffee before work.
The one who knew how she liked her movies.
The one who promised he would always stay.
Then she remembered the cemetery.
The phone screen.
The two messages.
And the way her entire world seemed to collapse all over again.
"What are you doing here?"
Her voice was calm.
She was proud of that.
The old Lila would have cried immediately.
The old Lila would have asked why.
She would have searched his face for an explanation.
But she wasn't that person anymore.
Ethan looked uncomfortable.
"I needed to talk to you."
"You could have called."
"I did."
"And I answered."
He looked away.
"You ended the call."
"Because I didn't know what else to say."
Silence.
For the first time, he looked like he understood the weight of what happened.
"I know I hurt you."
Lila folded her arms.
"Do you?"
His expression changed.
"What does that mean?"
"It means you knew my mom was dying. You knew I was falling apart. And you still chose that moment to leave."
"I was struggling too."
The answer made something inside her ache.
Not because she was angry.
Because she had heard it before.
Everyone had reasons.
Everyone had explanations.
But explanations didn't erase pain.
"I believe you were struggling," she said quietly.
His eyes lifted.
"But I was too."
The words silenced him.
---
"I was scared," Ethan admitted.
Lila said nothing.
"I didn't know how to help you."
"You could have stayed."
"I thought I was making things worse."
"You made the choice for both of us."
He looked down.
"I know."
And for a moment, Lila saw the person she used to love.
Not the person who hurt her.
Just someone who had made a painful mistake.
That was the hardest part.
Sometimes the people who hurt you weren't monsters.
Sometimes they were simply people who failed you.
"I wanted to come back sooner," he said.
"But?"
He swallowed.
"I was ashamed."
Lila looked at him.
"You were ashamed, and I was alone."
The truth landed between them.
Neither of them spoke.
---
A sound from inside the house interrupted them.
The front door opened.
Ethan Hawthorne stepped outside.
He stopped when he saw Lila and the stranger standing there.
His expression remained calm.
But his eyes immediately went to Lila.
Checking.
Making sure she was okay.
The difference was small.
But Lila noticed.
"Everything alright?"
Lila opened her mouth.
Before she could answer, Ethan Carter looked between them.
"Who is he?"
The question bothered her more than she expected.
Not because of jealousy.
Because of the assumption behind it.
She had spent so long being someone's girlfriend.
Someone's daughter.
Someone's responsibility.
She didn't want to be defined by that anymore.
"This is Ethan Hawthorne," she said.
"My employer."
Then she looked at Ethan Carter.
"And this is someone from my past."
Someone from my past.
Not my boyfriend.
Not the person I belonged to.
Just someone from her past.
Ethan Hawthorne noticed the difference.
---
Later that evening, after Ethan Carter left, Lila sat alone in the garden.
She expected to feel devastated.
Confused.
Lost.
Instead, she felt something unexpected.
Peace.
She heard footsteps behind her.
Ethan Hawthorne.
"You don't have to explain anything."
She looked up.
"Are you sure?"
He nodded.
"Yes."
She looked at the flowers beside her.
"He apologized."
"Did it help?"
She thought about it.
"A little."
"And?"
"But it didn't change what happened."
Ethan sat beside her.
"You sound different."
Lila smiled slightly.
"I am."
"How?"
She looked toward the sunset.
"I used to think getting an apology would fix everything."
"And now?"
"Now I know some things heal because you choose to let them go."
Ethan nodded.
"You chose yourself."
The words felt important.
Because she had.
For the first time, she had chosen herself.
Not because she stopped caring.
Because she finally understood that caring about someone didn't mean abandoning herself.
---
That night, Lila opened her journal.
She wrote:
"Today I saw the person who broke my heart."
She paused.
Then continued.
"But I didn't break again."
A small smile appeared.
"I think that means I'm healing."
She closed the journal.
Outside her window, the Hawthorne Estate was quiet.
For months, she had been afraid of losing people.
But now she understood something.
People leaving didn't mean she disappeared.
She was still here.
She was still Lila.
And that was enough.
---
Across the estate, Ethan stood in his office looking out at the garden.
He had seen the pain in her eyes when her past arrived.
But he had also seen something else.
Strength.
Lila Bennett wasn't waiting for someone to save her.
She had saved herself.
And somehow...
That made him admire her even more.
