The first ripple

The meeting the next morning was supposed to be routine. Yiren sat at the head of a conference table on the thirty-fifth floor of the Nine Dragons' legitimate headquarters, a bland office building that housed a half-dozen shell companies, none of which would raise eyebrows in an audit. Around her sat the department heads: finance, logistics, personnel, security. Men in suits who looked like any other corporate executives. Except for the guns in their shoulder holsters and except for the murder charges that would follow most of them if the police ever got serious. "Monthly reports," Yiren said. "Keep it brief." Finance went first. Numbers, percentages, projections. Money laundering through the studio was up twelve percent. Real estate investments were holding steady. A new casino in Macau was ahead of schedule. Logistics next. Shipping routes, trucking schedules, warehouse capacity. The usual. Yiren listened with half her attention, nodding at the appropriate moments, asking the occasional question. But her mind was elsewhere, on Xue Qiming, on his transparency push, on the archives sitting in Starlight's basement like a time bomb waiting to explode. Personnel was halfway through his update when the door opened. Old Wu never came to these meetings. He hated them, too many people, too much small talk, too much risk of saying something that could be overheard. If he was here, it was important. The room fell silent as he walked to Yiren's side and bent to whisper in her ear. "The Starlight acquisition," he murmured. "There's more. He's not just buying the studio. He's taking over operations personally. Moving his office there. Announced it this morning to the press." Yiren's expression didn't change. "And?" "He wants to produce your next film." For a moment, Yiren wasn't sure she'd heard correctly. "Who?" "Xue Qiming. He's announced that his first project as owner of Starlight will be Song Yiren's upcoming feature. He's calling it a 'creative partnership.' Says he'll be personally involved in every aspect of production." Old Wu paused. "He's holding a press conference right now. It's all over the news." The room was completely silent. Twenty pairs of eyes watched Yiren, waiting for her reaction. She gave them nothing. "Continue the meeting," she said calmly. "I'll be back." She rose and walked out, Old Wu following. In the hallway, away from the others, she finally let herself react, just a flicker of something across her face, there and gone. "Show me." Old Wu pulled out his tablet, pulled up a live stream. Xue Qiming stood at a podium, the Starlight Media logo behind him, facing a sea of reporters. He was dressed casually, jacket, no tie and he spoke with the easy confidence of someone who'd never been told no. "...and I want to be clear: this isn't about money. This isn't about expanding VisionTek's market share. This is about art. This is about working with the best talent in the world to create something meaningful." A reporter shouted a question. "Ms. Song Yiren hasn't commented on the acquisition. Have you spoken with her?" Qiming smiled. "Not yet. But I'm a firm believer that the best partnerships begin with a leap of faith. I'm leaping and I hope she'll catch me." More questions, more answers, all of them dripping with the same earnest enthusiasm. Yiren watched, her face unreadable. "He's either incredibly naive," Old Wu said quietly, "or he's playing a game we don't understand." "There's no game." Yiren shook her head slowly. "He really believes this. He really thinks he can walk in, shake hands, and make art with China's Sweetheart while his auditors tear apart her criminal empire." "He doesn't know about the empire." "No. He doesn't." She handed back the tablet. "Which means we have an opportunity." "Opportunity?" "He wants to work with me. Fine. I'll work with him. I'll be so charming, so cooperative and so grateful for his vision that he forgets all about those audits. I'll become his favorite person, his trusted partner, his…" She paused, searching for the right word. "His friend." Old Wu's eyebrows rose. "You're going to befriend him?" "I'm going to manage him. There's a difference." She started walking toward the elevator. "Set up a meeting. His office, tomorrow. Make it clear I'm eager to discuss his vision for the studio." "And if he insists on the audits?" "Then I'll convince him they're unnecessary. Or I'll slow-walk them until we've moved everything. Or I'll find something else to occupy his attention." The elevator doors opened. Yiren stepped inside. "He's a businessman, Old Wu. Businessmen respond to incentives. We'll find the right incentive." The doors closed, leaving Old Wu standing in the hallway. For a long moment, he didn't move. Then he pulled out his phone and began typing instructions. A meeting request, polite and professional, to the offices of VisionTek. Two floors down, Yiren's phone buzzed. A text from an unknown number: *Ms. Song, this is Xue Qiming. I know this is forward, but I'd love to buy you coffee sometime and talk about your next film. No pressure. Just a fan who happens to own your studio now. :) * She stared at the message for a long moment. The smiley face. He'd included a smiley face. Thirteen years of building an empire. Thirteen years of death threats and betrayals and bloody compromises. And now some idealistic billionaire with a smiley face was going to waltz into her life and expect her to be his partner. Yiren typed back: I'd like that. Tomorrow, 10am? My office at Starlight. The response came immediately: Perfect. Can't wait. She pocketed the phone and looked out the elevator's glass wall at the city below. Somewhere down there, Xue Qiming was probably celebrating, convinced he'd just made a breakthrough with the most important actress in China. He had no idea. The elevator reached the parking garage. Yiren walked to her car, her heels clicking against the concrete, her mind already calculating angles the opportunities and exit strategies. Behind her, the elevator doors closed with a soft hiss. Ahead of her, the game was about to begin.
