You won't know if it works until you try!
As Adam and Miao Yun Yao walked out of the building, it became abundantly clear that the path they took was littered with the corpses of zombies, all of which had fallen in the direction they were heading.
That very direction led straight back to where Adam and his group had arrived from, and without a doubt, these deaths were the work of Ling Ao. To speak frankly, as a former elite soldier, Ling Ao's strength was unquestionable. In fact, were he alone, his chances of survival might even surpass Adam's. The previous setbacks were mainly due to the delays caused by Miao Yun Yao and the mother-daughter duo, Shangguan Ya. Otherwise, Ling Ao could have lived more freely.
"Aren't you leaving directly?" Miao Yun Yao asked, bewildered when she noticed that Adam was not heading back, but instead moving towards the supermarket.
"Aren't you hungry? And we also need more tools—this won't be enough," Adam replied, glancing at the iron shovel in his hand.
His weapon had long since been lost, and when they had left earlier, the man who was supposed to be hunting had given him this iron shovel. It was the only weapon he had now.
Each time they ventured outside, they had to bring their own weapons, and this shovel had been found by that man during his own risky venture. Grateful that Adam had agreed to take care of both his and his wife's share, he handed over his only weapon.
"Since you're not planning on going back, you've deceived that man..." Miao Yun Yao frowned as she noticed the shovel.
It was clear that Adam had taken the only item that man could rely on for survival, an item that could have given him a better chance at life in the future.
"At least he doesn't have to risk his life today, right? Consider this as payment for my help. And as for the deception... at the time, I really did plan to go back. I only changed my mind afterward," Adam replied nonchalantly.
Even someone as worldly as Miao Yun Yao was momentarily taken aback by his shamelessness. Clearly, Adam had dragged her along with him with no intention of returning and was now trying to justify it as a mere change of heart.
But Adam paid her no mind as he made his way toward the supermarket, methodically eliminating a dozen or so zombies along the way. If it weren't for the fear of attracting more zombies, he would have liked to eliminate even more, considering his dwindling points.
Miao Yun Yao, on the other hand, was more concerned with finding her daughter. Although Ling Ao had already gone ahead, she still felt uneasy. However, as someone with no survival skills, she had no choice but to follow Adam, knowing that a single zombie could easily end her life.
Adam, who could have easily ditched Miao Yun Yao, chose to wait for her as they arrived at the side entrance of the supermarket.
The main entrance had already been nearly destroyed by previous visitors, and from the outside, the interior was barely visible due to the lack of light.
The supermarket, once bright and welcoming, was now in complete darkness after the collapse of the power grid. With poor natural lighting, anyone contemplating entering had to think twice.
Without lights, with only dim lighting, and in a complicated terrain where zombies could be lurking, caution was necessary. Adam, after assessing the situation inside, furrowed his brow.
"It's dangerous in there, isn't it?" Miao Yun Yao asked, stating the obvious. It was clear to anyone that this dark, almost pitch-black supermarket hid great peril.
"Stay outside," Adam said, unwilling to divide his attention by worrying about protecting someone who had little to offer, especially someone who might panic at the first sign of danger.
"But..." Miao Yun Yao hesitated. She knew why Adam didn't want her to enter, and while she appreciated his consideration, she also understood that staying outside did not guarantee her safety. Even though Adam had cleared the area of zombies, she knew more could appear at any moment. Without Adam, what could she do?
"Stop relying on others all the time. Those who lack the ability will eventually be eliminated," Adam said, and without waiting for her to respond, he walked into the supermarket, where visibility was nearly zero.
From the entrance, some faint light still allowed Adam to make out the basic layout, but once deeper inside, even with his eyes adjusting to the darkness, he could only discern objects within three or four meters.
Beyond that, everything was a blur. In this silence and darkness, Adam could rely only on his hearing.
If any zombies were nearby, their growls would be a clear warning.
But what exactly was Adam looking for in the supermarket?
Food! It was crucial, especially since he had spent 400 points earlier and had learned the true value of his remaining points. One exchange of 400 points was gone in an instant, and that was only for one single item.
To earn 400 points, he would need to kill 400 zombies! The comparison was stark.
Thus, it was wise to save whenever possible. Adam was fully prepared and ready for his expedition.
As for weapons, although he had acquired the shovel through deception, it was not the most convenient tool for him. Sometimes, a weapon that feels natural in the hand could make all the difference between life and death.
Though he did not expect to find anything too extraordinary, the supermarket, once the best and most stocked in the country, was still likely to offer the most comprehensive selection of supplies.
"Is it really worth the risk? Your plan's outcome is still uncertain. You're a strange person, always entertaining odd ideas, and now you want to test even this one..."
The virtual light had a specific meaning: it was Adam's biggest reason for venturing into this dangerous place. While food and usable weapons were important, they were secondary to a larger, more personal reason for coming here.
"How would we know if we don't try?" Adam thought with a smile. The virtual light could detect his thoughts and emotional fluctuations, revealing everything about him with no secrets left hidden.
"Even though there was an anomaly last time, that was just..."
"Everything can only be known after trying, right?" Adam had already spotted the first thing he needed, and simultaneously, he heard the sound he dreaded most but had grown accustomed to in this world.
