Episode 22

Big chest, no brains... Due to being an undeveloped area, this location is devoid of human presence, not to mention the absence of even a stray cat or dog. Any remains found are merely bones, devoured by the zombies... Speaking of which, Adam has yet to encounter any non-human animals since the outbreak. Given that such creatures are scarce in the city, he has not paid them much heed. The unknown virus that transforms humans into zombies—what effect does it have on other animals? Faced with Adam's inquiry, Ling Ao and the others are at a loss for words. Since the outbreak began, they have seen no signs of animal zombification apart from humans. After searching for a morning, they found several vehicles, though most were tractors and heavy-duty trucks. Only three private cars were discovered, all of which were high-end but suffered varying degrees of damage. Another option was a construction truck, large and robust, with formidable protective capabilities. The tires alone were as tall as a child, and if they could drive that truck, they would be able to crush through any hordes of zombies they encountered. Both Adam and Ling Ao were elated to find these two engineering vehicles, recognizing their significant contribution to their safety in the journey ahead. However, after inspecting the vehicles, it was Ling Ao who ultimately declared them unsuitable and was forced to give up on them. "What's the matter? Why can't we use it?" Despite being a headstrong young lady, who had even made unreasonable demands for a bath the previous night, Shu Guangya had endured several days surrounded by zombies, with her life constantly in jeopardy. Shu Guangya understood that facing zombies, a truck like this would provide far greater safety than a private car. This was not merely a matter of comfort; indeed, such vehicles are uncomfortable, malodorous, and jarring, offering none of the luxury of those high-end private vehicles. Nevertheless, considering safety, these trucks were clearly the priority. The protective outer layer alone was incomparable to the so-called high-end Japanese sedans. Miao Yunxiao, too, was perplexed. Upon seeing Adam and Ling Ao abandon what should have been a safe truck, she expressed her confusion, "You need not worry about me and Xiaoya; we understand the current circumstances. We can endure such hardships." This beautiful woman mistakenly assumed that Adam and Ling Ao were forgoing the truck to spare her and her daughter from discomfort. Adam remained silent, stifling a cold laugh within. He considered bringing along these two women to be Ling Ao's gravest error. They offered no assistance and merely drained his energy and stamina. In a crisis, they would be a liability, leaving Adam baffled as to why Ling Ao insisted on keeping them around. Loyalty? Although she was once a bodyguard for the Shu family, the world had changed! Love? That was something Adam held in disdain... The only conclusion Adam could draw was that accompanying these two beautiful women served as an outlet for his desires. But that was merely his private reflection... Yet, what nonsense was this? While Miao Yunxiao's response seemed understanding on the surface, it did little to conceal the underlying arrogance and delicateness. Enduring hardship? How could she utter such words? In these dire times, merely surviving was a blessing! To suggest hardship while traveling in a truck? Adam would go so far as to coat himself in zombie blood for survival! And these two women, still preoccupied with bathing... Hmph... "Well... the truth is, this truck has some issues, so it's not usable," Ling Ao said, his expression awkward. He shared the same sentiments as Adam but lacked the audacity to express them so candidly. "The fuel tank is nearly empty. Given this truck's consumption rate, we'll run out of fuel before reaching the elevated roadway, forcing us to walk!" Adam explained for Ling Ao, revealing that during their inspection, they found the fuel gauge indicating less than one-sixth of a tank. Upon opening the fuel tank, they confirmed it was indeed low. Adam was uncertain how far they could travel, but Ling Ao estimated they would be forced to stop before reaching the elevated roadway due to lack of fuel. "Is that so..." Upon hearing Adam's response, Shu Guangya remained oblivious, but Miao Yunxiao grasped the implication. That stretch of road ran through a densely populated small town, necessitating passage before reaching the elevated highway. While the town's population was not as dense as the city, the current situation rendered any encounter with a horde of zombies perilous, particularly in the absence of weapons and protection. There must be thousands of zombies in that area. Stopping there due to fuel depletion would be tantamount to a death sentence! "Fuel? Are you all worried about that? You're being rather foolish!" Observing Adam, Ling Ao, and even her mother seemingly surrendering, Shu Guangya regarded them with curiosity. Surprised, Adam and the others wondered if this seemingly superficial young lady might have a clever solution. They often say that women are pretty but dimwitted; Shu Guangya, youthful yet endowed with her mother's exquisite genes, possessed a notable bosom. Did she conceive a problem that escaped Adam and Ling Ao's notice? "Are you all so foolish? It's just fuel! Isn't there plenty over there?" She gestured towards the few private cars parked nearby. "Can't you siphon the fuel from those cars and transfer it to this one?" Watching her condescendingly regard them as simpletons, Adam's eye twitched. Ling Ao nearly choked on his own saliva. "Oh, Xiaoya, that's actually a brilliant idea! Ling Ao! Let's do just that; you and Adam go siphon the fuel from those cars and pour it into this construction truck, and then we can set off!" If Shu Guangya's suggestion had caused Adam's eye to twitch, Miao Yunxiao's approving tone and directive demeanor made him turn away, feeling exasperated. He decided it would be best to leave Ling Ao to explain the situation. "Madam, um... that won't work..." Ling Ao wore a pained expression, and Adam sympathized with him; dealing with these two women was quite the burden. "Why not? Don't tell me that a former special forces soldier can't handle something so trivial!" Miao Yunxiao's expression hardened, her tone infuriating. Adam found her insufferable, grateful that she wasn't directing her ire at him. "Madam, this construction truck runs on diesel!" Ling Ao felt near tears. Yes, a diesel engine, while the private cars operated on gasoline. How could they make use of two incompatible fuel types? "Isn't it all fuel? Can't they be interchangeable?" The naive young lady's continued inquiries left Adam exasperated, prompting him to turn away...
