Shut up! A foolish woman has no right to live!
Earlier, the nauseating contents Adam had vomited into the toilet bowl mostly comprised the failed virus solution he had tried to fuse with. Xu Cai had eventually disclosed this to him.
"Since you failed to merge with the virus solution, and because of your reckless and absurd action, the virus couldn't fully infect you, which is why you bizarrely ended up expelling it," Xu Cai explained.
Such an occurrence had never been documented before; Adam was a groundbreaking exception. Theoretically, once someone ingested the virus solution, the outcome was either success or failure, with no room for a third possibility.
Yet, Adam had become that anomaly. He hadn't succeeded, but neither had he turned into a zombie.
"You should have told me earlier!" Adam was drowning in regret.
That solution had cost him 400 hard-earned wealth points! Four hundred points, the equivalent of slaying 400 zombies, flushed away as mere waste?
Could he perhaps salvage it? From the toilet, even...
"That's revolting! Don't you dare!" Xu Cai, who had unrestricted access to Adam's thoughts, hurriedly intervened to stop his outrageous impulse, as he was genuinely about to plunge his hand into the toilet.
"But! If I hadn't vomited, even if I couldn't absorb it immediately, wouldn't it eventually fuse with me?" Adam was beside himself with remorse. Knowing what he did now, he would have endured.
To him, what he had expelled was more precious than mere vomit—it was gold! No, more valuable than gold or diamonds!
"You i***t! You great, big i***t!" Xu Cai erupted, her tsundere personality in full force.
"Yes! I'm a fool! The biggest fool in the world for wasting such a treasure!" Adam was nearly in tears.
"You don't get it! Those remnants were hazardous! Had you not expelled them in time, the infection might have taken hold! Do you think it was all a game?" Xu Cai's words stunned him. Infection? Wasn't he safe now?
"You wouldn't understand all the intricacies, so I'll simplify it for you," Xu Cai continued. "Though you delayed the infection with your desperate measures, it was only temporary. If the remnants hadn't been purged, you would've eventually succumbed. Vomiting them was the best course of action!"
Did he understand? Yes, he did. But disappointment still lingered.
"Feeling regretful? You should be grateful! Miracles don't happen repeatedly. You barely escaped this time; don't expect it again. You were already fortunate enough!"
Fortunate? Adam gave a bitter smile. If luck were truly on his side, why hadn't he succeeded from the start?
Xu Cai fell silent, unable to provide comfort. Ultimately, Adam had gambled away 400 wealth points and narrowly escaped death, with seemingly nothing to show for it.
Well, not entirely nothing. He had slain several zombies and retained about thirty wealth points. Plus, he still had his life.
But why did it feel like such a loss?
"Don't be so disheartened," Xu Cai said, sensing his gloom. "You did gain something."
Something? Adam sighed. Perhaps staying alive was indeed the greatest reward. Wealth could be earned again, but once gone, life couldn't be reclaimed.
"Cheer up! While you didn't fully merge with the virus, your reckless actions did yield some unique changes!"
When Adam asked what changes, Xu Cai only urged him to check his status.
"Huh? My body..." To his surprise, Adam found that his physical abilities had improved.
His speed and agility had reached higher levels, his reaction time was now above average, and his strength had also improved. Although he remained in a state of weakness, his capabilities had significantly increased.
Though not as dramatic as a complete viral fusion, these enhancements were notable.
"While you failed to merge fully, a minor fraction of the virus might have integrated with your body during your struggles, resulting in subtle improvements," Xu Cai clarified.
It was good news. It felt like winning a second-place prize in a lottery after missing the jackpot.
With renewed spirit, Adam stood up. Failure was just a setback. As long as he kept trying, there would be other opportunities. Spending 400 points to escape death and emerge stronger wasn't a complete loss.
He splashed water on his pale face, flushed the virus-tainted vomit away, and left the bathroom.
"Ling Ao! Where is my daughter? What have you done to her?" An agitated voice rang out as soon as he stepped out. He glanced over and saw Miao Yunyao, now awake.
"Madam, I..." Ling Ao stammered, avoiding Miao Yunyao's furious gaze.
"Enough! Your daughter may not be dead yet!" Adam cut through their argument sharply. Though he looked weak, there was a peculiar authority in his voice that silenced them.
"Adam, are you alright?" Ling Ao asked with concern, but Adam ignored him. He hadn't forgiven Ling Ao for his cowardly behavior.
"Miao...what was it again? Anyway, whether your daughter is alive or not hardly matters now. What matters is that you're still alive," Adam tried to offer comfort, but it came out sounding almost mocking.
"What do you know? Xiaoya is my daughter! My only family!" Miao Yunyao's anger flared up again, although she felt a strange fear in Adam's presence.
"Your daughter, your family—none of that matters anymore. In this world, survival is paramount! Self-preservation is the ultimate priority, even if it seems selfish. Frankly, your daughter wasn't fit for survival in this world."
