The Alpha's presence filled the clearing like a physical force thick and suffocating.
Ivy gripped the flaming branch tighter her palms sweating. The fire's glow reflected in the Alpha's blood-red eyes but he didn’t flinch.
He prowled forward slowly deliberately as if savoring the fear radiating off her.
Behind him two other wolves emerged smaller but no less terrifying. Their snarls tore through the night air their teeth glinting like knives.
"Stay behind me" Calder barked stepping forward shielding Ivy with his battered body.
The Alpha shifted a ripple of fur and bone and a second later a man stood in his place tall muscled cruelly beautiful with black hair and those same demonic red eyes.
He wore only a pair of dark jeans and the sight of him sent terror lancing down Ivy’s spine.
"You made this harder than it needed to be Blackthorn" the Alpha said his voice smooth and sharp as broken glass. "You were supposed to deliver her."
Calder’s muscles tensed.
"Not a chance."
The Alpha smiled a slow predatory thing.
"No matter. I'll just take her."
With a sharp motion he raised a hand.
The two wolves lunged.
Calder met them midair.
It was a blur snarls teeth fists colliding with flesh. Calder fought like a man possessed his body moving with lethal precision. But he was injured exhausted. And there were two of them.
Ivy didn’t think.
She charged.
The flaming branch arced through the air striking one of the wolves across the muzzle. It yelped recoiling giving Calder the opening he needed to drive a blade into its side.
But the second wolf slammed into Calder knocking him off his feet.
"Ivy!" Calder roared.
The Alpha advanced toward her.
Slow. Certain.
"You don’t have to be afraid" he said voice like poisoned honey. "You're mine little wolf. You always were."
Something inside Ivy cracked.
No.
She was no one’s possession.
Not anymore.
The fire in her hand guttered then flared brighter than before.
The Alpha hesitated frowning.
"You’re waking up" he said almost curious. "Interesting."
Energy coursed through Ivy’s veins hot and wild making her limbs vibrate.
Without thinking she raised the branch not as a weapon but as a conduit.
The fire responded.
It leapt from the branch swirling around her in a sudden storm of heat and light.
The Alpha’s smile vanished.
"You’re not just a wolf" he said sharply. "You're"
He lunged.
Ivy thrust her hand out instinctively.
A blast of searing fire erupted from her palm slamming into the Alpha and sending him sprawling backward with a snarl of rage.
The clearing fell silent for a single stunned heartbeat.
Then chaos.
The injured wolves fled into the trees whimpering.
The Alpha staggered to his feet fury twisting his beautiful features into something monstrous.
"You'll regret that girl" he spat.
Calder was at Ivy’s side in an instant blood dripping from a gash on his shoulder.
"You felt it didn’t you?" he rasped grabbing her arm. "The power."
Ivy nodded too stunned to speak.
Calder’s expression was grim and full of something close to awe.
"You’re not just a shifter" he said. "You’re something... more."
The Alpha snarled and shifted back into wolf form his massive body coiling to strike.
Calder didn’t hesitate.
"Run" he barked at Ivy. "Now!"
But Ivy didn’t move.
She couldn’t leave him.
Not now.
Instead she stepped forward planting herself between Calder and the monstrous wolf.
"Ivy no!" Calder shouted but it was too late.
The Alpha lunged a blur of black fur and death.
Ivy didn’t think.
She felt.
She called to the fire within her the fire that had been waiting sleeping buried for too long.
It answered.
With a roar a wave of heat exploded outward from her body slamming into the Alpha mid-leap. He howled tumbling backward smoke rising from his singed fur.
The ground scorched beneath Ivy’s feet but she didn’t feel pain.
Only power.
The Alpha hit the ground hard scrabbling to his feet but his movements were slower now uncertain.
He stared at her with something she hadn’t expected.
Fear.
For the first time the Alpha looked afraid.
"You don't know what you are" he growled voice ragged.
"Maybe not" Ivy said lifting her chin. "But I know what I'm not. Yours."
The Alpha bared his teeth in a snarl then turned and fled into the darkness.
The other wolves were already gone.
For a long moment neither Ivy nor Calder moved.
The fire around her slowly died down leaving only the crackle of the small campfire and the distant sounds of the night returning to normal.
Finally Calder let out a ragged breath and staggered toward her.
"You’re insane" he muttered. "Brave and completely insane."
Ivy swayed suddenly exhausted. Calder caught her before she hit the ground.
"You saved us" he murmured brushing a strand of hair from her face. "You saved me."
She looked up at him dazed.
"Did I really just do that?" she whispered.
Calder huffed a broken laugh.
"You did more than that. You scared the Alpha himself."
He eased her down by the fire checking her for injuries with surprisingly gentle hands.
"You have magic Ivy" he said quietly. "Real magic. Not just the wolf inside you something older. Wilder."
Ivy tried to process it but her brain felt like mush.
"I don’t understand" she said shivering as the adrenaline wore off. "How?"
Calder hesitated.
"Some bloodlines are... different" he said finally. "Myths speak of wolves born under rare celestial events. Wolves who could wield the elements themselves."
He met her gaze eyes dark and serious.
"I think you’re one of them."
Ivy blinked numb.
"But why me?"
Calder shook his head.
"I don’t know. Yet."
He wrapped his arms around her pulling her close letting her soak in his warmth.
"But I do know one thing" he said voice fierce. "The Alpha won’t give up. He’ll come back. With more wolves. Stronger magic."
Ivy shuddered.
"Then what do we do?" she asked her voice small.
Calder leaned in forehead against hers.
"We find the others" he whispered. "The ones who can help you learn what you are. The ones who survived the Alpha’s purge."
"Others like me?" Ivy breathed.
"Maybe not exactly like you" Calder said with a faint smile. "I’m not sure anyone is like you. But others who’ll fight with us."
Hope sparked inside her.
Flickering. Fragile.
But real.
For the first time since her world had shattered Ivy felt like maybe just maybe she wasn’t doomed.
Maybe she was destined for something more.
And maybe just maybe she wasn't alone anymore.
Calder tilted her chin up his thumb brushing her cheek.
"You’re not alone" he said as if reading her mind. "Not while I’m breathing."
