I woke slowly the next morning, wrapped up in warmth I had already grown so used to. Kael’s arm was heavy around my waist like always, his chest rising steadily against my back telling me he was still fast asleep. Today was the day of the Alpha meeting. I turned my head just enough to look at Kael as he slept. Sleep softened Kael. His brow was smooth now, his jaw unclenched, lashes casting shadows against his cheeks as he was sleeping on his stomach. This—this calm—was rare. Earned only in moments when he felt safe enough to let go. I wished I could keep him like this. Just for a few more minutes. God knows he deserved some peace of mind.
