The dining room felt different that evening. The sun had begun to sink lower, casting long, golden-orange and pinkish rays through the tall windows, and every polished surface caught the glow, making the room look like it was lit from within. The heavy table was already set when I had entered, its surface lined with bowls and platters that looked fit for an army, not four people. Jax was the first to notice my presence. He raised a brow as if to say, 'You made it this far without another disaster?' but didn’t comment; he just jerked his chin at the empty chair sitting across from him. Orvyn glanced up too, his expression unreadable, though his sharp features softened the moment he dipped his head in something that could almost pass as respect.
