The last of the bread was still warm in my hand when Varion’s voice rolled across the table, smooth and commanding. “Orvyn. Jax.” Both men straightened immediately, their easy postures shifting into attention. “You have your orders,” Varion continued, his gaze never leaving me. “See them carried out before nightfall.” Neither man questioned him. Orvyn dipped his chin in a sharp nod before standing, his movements crisp, precise. Jax followed more leisurely, flashing me a grin that made it feel like he was leaving me to wolves—plural. “Until next time, little human,” he said with a wink.
