Just as I expected, Riven's advances came fast and bold.
During our big English literature lecture, the professor asked everyone to pick a favorite quote and share it with the class.
In the quiet room, Riven stood up, locked eyes with me, and raised an eyebrow. "If I could rearrange the alphabet, I'd put U and I together."
His friends let out playful whoops.
I played along, letting my cheeks flush pink under his gaze.
After class, he caught hold of my backpack strap.
"Ms. Thatcher, our department just started a billiards club. Want to come practice?"
I smiled to myself. 'This big fish was biting.'
"I don't know how to play, though," I said.
He swung my bag over his shoulder and nodded toward the exit. "I'll teach you. I was on the varsity team all through high school."
At the billiards' hall, he laughed when I could barely hold the cue steady.
Stepping behind me, the rich scent of sandalwood and dark amber wrapped around me.
"Darya, like this... keep your arm firm to get the right force." His hand covered mine, and we struck hard.
The cue ball scattered every other ball across the table, sinking straight into the pocket.
I turned to him, looking at his handsome, roguish profile.
"What was that shot called?" I asked.
He didn't let go of my hand, and breathed softly near my ear.
"No spin. I don't put spin on anything—on or off the table"
I knew. If not for this bet, I would have fallen for him right then and there.
So, when he offered to walk me back to the dorms, I said yes.
Who wouldn't want a few extra minutes with someone that good-looking?

Over the next week, he only stepped up his efforts.
Saved me a seat for every early morning lecture.
Showed up with a hot breakfast when it poured rain.
Canceled all his Valentine's Day plans just to study with me in the library.
I took it all in stride, letting myself soak up the kind of affection I'd never known growing up.
Then that weekend, he stood me up.
I put on my cheapest dress and walked to my shift at the bar nearby.
In the dim, crowded room, I wore a face mask and carried tray after tray of drinks.
Leaning against a pillar for a moment's rest, I glanced over at a private booth.
Solenne was curled up against Riven, and the table was lined with expensive amber liquor.
From where I stood, they looked like the perfect leading couple.
