Chapter 10: The Man Behind the Mask
The atmosphere inside the Moretti Estate had changed.
For the first time in years, distrust filled the halls that had always been bound by loyalty. Every guard, every soldier, every servant wondered the same thing:
Who was the traitor?
Luca stood at the head of the conference table, his expression unreadable.
"No one leaves the estate without my permission," he ordered.
Antonio nodded. "Already done."
"Every phone call, every visitor, every vehicle entering or leaving this estate will be monitored."
The room fell silent.
Luca wasn't taking chances anymore.
If someone inside his organization was feeding information to the kidnappers, he would expose them.
No matter who they were.
---
Meanwhile...
Giovanni Moretti sat quietly in his cell.
Hours had passed since Ethan, the young guard, had spoken to him.
The heavy door creaked open once again.
Ethan stepped inside with a tray of food.
He placed it on the floor and turned to leave.
"Wait," Giovanni said.
Ethan stopped.
"You've been thinking about what I said."
The young guard didn't answer.
"My family will never stop looking for me."
"I know."
"And when they find this place, the men you're working for will leave you behind."
Ethan lowered his head.
"I only took this job because my mother needed surgery."
Giovanni looked at him with compassion.
"They used your desperation."
Tears welled in Ethan's eyes.
"I didn't know they were kidnapping people."
Giovanni nodded slowly.
"Help me, Ethan."
The young guard remained silent for several seconds.
Finally, he slipped a small folded piece of paper beneath the food tray.
"Don't let anyone see this."
Without another word, he hurried out of the room.
Giovanni waited until the footsteps faded before unfolding the paper.
On it were only three words.
Blackstone Freight Yard.
Giovanni smiled for the first time since his kidnapping.
Someone inside was finally willing to help.
---
Back at the Moretti Estate...
Vincent entered Luca's office carrying a tablet.
"We've finished reviewing the estate's security footage."
"Find anything?"
"Maybe."
He placed the tablet on the desk.
The footage showed the night before the warehouse explosion.
A black delivery van entered through the rear service gate.
Antonio frowned.
"I don't remember authorizing a delivery."
"You didn't," Vincent replied.
"The driver used forged documents."
Luca watched carefully.
The driver kept his face hidden beneath a cap.
But something caught Luca's attention.
"Pause."
Vincent froze the image.
"The driver's wrist."
Antonio leaned closer.
There, just below the sleeve, was a tattoo.
A coiled serpent wrapped around a dagger.
Luca's eyes narrowed.
"I've seen that before."
"Where?" Antonio asked.
"Ten years ago."
His voice became cold.
"My father arrested one of our own men for stealing family secrets."
Antonio's face changed.
"He had the same tattoo."
"He belonged to a mercenary group."
"The Vipers."
"They don't work for free."
Luca leaned back in his chair.
"Someone hired professionals."
---
Across town...
Isabella sat in her apartment, unable to focus.
The threatening note was still lying on her table.
If Luca keeps searching, his grandfather dies.
She wanted to stay away.
She really did.
But every time she remembered Luca's determined face, she knew she couldn't simply ignore what was happening.
Her phone rang.
This time, it was Luca.
She hesitated before answering.
"Hello?"
"Are you safe?"
His deep voice was calm but filled with concern.
"I think so."
"I've assigned men to watch your apartment."
"You did what?"
"You've become a target."
Silence followed.
Finally, Isabella spoke softly.
"You don't have to protect me."
"Yes," Luca replied without hesitation.
"I do."
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Then Luca said quietly,
"I won't let anyone hurt you."
Isabella felt her heart race.
For the first time, she realized the ruthless mafia boss wasn't calling because he needed information.
He was calling because he genuinely cared.

That evening...
Inside an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of the city, the mastermind behind Giovanni's kidnapping stood before several masked men.
"The Moretti family is getting closer," one of them reported.
"They've discovered the freight yard."
The leader smiled beneath his mask.
"Exactly as planned."
One of the men looked confused.
"You wanted them to find it?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because sometimes the fastest way to destroy your enemy..."
He slowly removed one black glove.
"...is to let him believe he's winning."
The masked men fell silent.
The leader turned toward a large map hanging on the wall.
A single photograph of Luca Moretti was pinned to the center.
Beside it was another photograph.
Isabella'
The leader tapped both pictures with one finger.
"If Luca refuses to stop searching..."
"...we'll force him to make an impossible choice."
Outside, thunder rolled across the night sky as the city unknowingly moved closer to a confrontation that would change the Moretti family forever.
