The man who refused to fall

1014 Words
Silence. It was the most terrifying sound Isabella had ever heard. She stood frozen in the panic room, staring at the black surveillance monitor. Her heartbeat thundered in her ears as one question repeated over and over. Was Luca dead? "No..." she whispered, shaking her head. "No, he can't be." She rushed from one monitor to another, desperately searching for a working camera. Most of the security feeds had gone offline, leaving only a handful still active. The hallways were littered with broken furniture, shattered glass, and abandoned weapons. Smoke drifted through the mansion, making it difficult to see. Then one screen flickered back to life. Luca was still standing. Relief washed over Isabella so suddenly that she nearly collapsed. The bullet hadn't hit him. Instead, one of his guards had spotted the attacker at the last second and fired first. The masked gunman lay motionless on the marble floor. Luca didn't even look back. He simply nodded once in silent thanks before continuing down the corridor. "Unbelievable," Isabella breathed. He moved through the mansion like a storm—calm, relentless, impossible to stop. --- Outside, the gunfire began to fade. The attackers realized they had lost the element of surprise. One by one, they retreated toward the forest, leaving behind several of their own. Within minutes, the Romano estate was quiet again. The only sounds were the crackling of damaged electrical wires and the distant rumble of thunder. The panic room door unlocked with a heavy click. Luca stepped inside. His white shirt was stained with blood. Isabella gasped. "You're hurt!" "It's not mine." She looked at him carefully. Aside from a small cut above his eyebrow, he appeared unharmed. Without thinking, she crossed the room and touched his face. "You're bleeding." For a moment, neither of them spoke. Luca looked into her eyes, surprised by the concern she hadn't meant to reveal. Realizing what she had done, Isabella quickly stepped back. "I... I was just making sure you weren't injured." A faint smile touched Luca's lips. "Of course." She rolled her eyes. "Don't flatter yourself." --- An hour later, the mansion was under control. Emergency crews treated the wounded while security teams searched every inch of the property. Luca gathered his senior staff in the command room. "Report." Marco, the head of security, answered first. "We lost three men." The room fell silent. "Six were injured." Luca lowered his head briefly. "They'll be honored." Marco nodded. "We also captured one attacker alive." That caught Luca's attention. "Where is he?" "In the underground holding room." "Good." He turned to Isabella. "Come with me." She frowned. "Why?" "Because it's time you heard the truth." --- The underground prison was cold and dimly lit. The captured attacker sat tied to a metal chair. His face was bruised, but his eyes burned with hatred. When Luca entered, the man laughed. "So... the great Luca Romano survived." "I disappoint people often." The prisoner spat blood onto the floor. "You won't survive much longer." Luca pulled up a chair and sat opposite him. "Who sent you?" Silence. Luca sighed. "I was hoping you'd make this easy." The prisoner smiled. "You should be asking a different question." Luca raised an eyebrow. "Oh?" "You should ask why she matters." His eyes shifted toward Isabella. A chill ran down her spine. "You know who I am?" she asked. The man laughed again. "Everyone knows who you are." "I don't." "You will." Before anyone could react, the prisoner bit down hard. Blood poured from his mouth. Marco rushed forward. "Stop him!" It was too late. Hidden inside one of his teeth had been a cyanide capsule. Within seconds, the man collapsed. Dead. Marco cursed under his breath. "He killed himself." Luca's expression darkened. "He was prepared." --- Back upstairs, Isabella struggled to process everything. "They were willing to die without saying anything." Luca nodded. "Professional mercenaries." "But why me?" "I wish I knew." "No." She stopped walking and faced him. "You know something." He remained silent. "My father knew something." Silence. "My mother was murdered." Still silence. She stepped closer. "And now people are trying to kill me." Finally, Luca spoke. "Your father once saved my life." She blinked. "What?" "It happened twenty-two years ago." "You never told me." "You never asked." He walked toward one of the bookshelves and removed an old leather journal. "This belonged to your father." Isabella stared at it. "He left it with me." Her hands trembled as she accepted it. "He said that if anything ever happened to him..." Luca paused. "...I was to give it to you when you were ready." She looked down at the worn leather cover. Her father's initials were engraved in faded gold. Tears filled her eyes. "I've missed him every day." "I know." She slowly opened the journal. The first several pages contained ordinary notes. Names. Dates. Business meetings. Then she reached a folded letter tucked between the pages. On the front, written in her father's unmistakable handwriting, were five words. For Isabella. Read Alone. Her breath caught. She looked at Luca. He nodded. "It's yours." She unfolded the letter carefully. The first line stole the air from her lungs. My dearest Bella, if you're reading this, it means I have failed to protect you. A tear rolled down her cheek. She kept reading. Everything you believed about our family is a lie. Your mother did not die by accident. She died because of something she discovered—something powerful people would kill to keep hidden. If they are searching for you now, then they believe you possess the final piece they could never find. Isabella's hands began to shake uncontrollably. She looked up at Luca, fear filling her eyes. "What final piece?" Before he could answer, every phone in the room rang at once. Marco answered his immediately. His face turned pale. "Boss..." "What is it?" "The hospital." Luca's jaw tightened. "What happened?" "They've taken your grandfather." The room fell deathly silent. Marco swallowed hard before saying the words no one wanted to hear. "Vittorio Romano has been kidnapped."
